Description
Olá and Hallo! We are a vibrant multicultural family—a Portuguese and German couple with three kids (ages 15, 8, and 6)—living a life rooted in nature and community.
Our home, Quinta Estrada Romana, is uniquely situated directly on the historic St. James Way (Camino Português de Santiago). Our daily life is a blend of sustainable living and offering support and a friendly "Buen Camio" to the pilgrims passing by our front door.
We are passionate about the land and we would love to implement a Permaculture Design to guide our vegetable gardens and the ecosystem of the farm. Sharing our space are Kaya, our playful 2-year-old dog, and Max the guinea pig. We also enjoy the help of our neighbors' animals; occasionally, they bring their sheep and horses here for grazing, helping us manage the grass and fertilize the soil naturally.
We are looking for hands-on help to continue developing our gardens and maintaining the land. Whether it’s weeding, planting, or general maintenance, your help allows us to keep this sanctuary flourishing for our family and the pilgrims passing through. We love the multicultural exchange of sharing stories, languages, and life on the farm.
We are located in a peaceful rural setting, yet we are very well connected:
The Town: Valença do Minho is just 6km away, where you can explore the famous fortress or cross the bridge by walking into Spain (Tui).
The Coast: We are only 30 minutes away by train from several stunning Atlantic beaches (Moledo beach)—perfect for a refreshing swim on your days off .
Travel: From Valença, there are direct train and bus connections to the beautiful city of Porto, or Viana do Castelo or Braga making weekend trips very easy.
We offer a chance to experience authentic life in Northern Portugal, a seat at our family table, and the opportunity to live in a beautiful, multicultural environment. If you love kids, animals, community and the outdoors, we would love to welcome you to the Quinta!
A Unique Way to Arrive: If you are a hiker or like to walk, and want to truly immerse yourself in Portuguese culture from the moment you arrive in the country, we highly recommend walking the Camino to our front door! You can start in Porto and walk the Camino Português de Santiago (Central Route). It takes about 4 to 5 days of walking through beautiful landscapes, and the path leads you directly to our farm. It is the perfect way to start your stay with us! :)

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
At our home, you will be in touch with a unique blend of Portuguese and German culture and live a multicultural life, where there is a constant exchange of stories, food, and traditions.
What you will experience and learn:
Authentic Roots of Portugal: The Minho region is one of the most traditional parts of the country. You will get to know the true heart of Portuguese rural life, mixed with the traditions of Galicia (North part of Spain). It's very often that locals here use some Galego to express themselves .
The "Cerdal Market" Experience: On the second Sunday of every month, a traditional market happens right at our door and atracks a lot of Spanish (Galicians)! It is a local legend where you can find everything from clothes and tools to animals and fresh fruits and vegetables.
Multiculturalism: We are happy to "practice" Portuguese, German, or English with you while sharing meals for example.
The Camino Spirit: Being located right on the Camino de Santiago ( at the Estrada Romana - The Roman Way), you will feel the spiritual and international energy of the pilgrims walking toward Santiago.
Aide
We are looking for motivated individuals who enjoy physical work and being outdoors. Since we are in the early stages of developing the land, we have a wide variety of tasks that change depending on the season.
Main tasks include:
Gardening: Planting, weeding, and maintaining our vegetable garden.
Land Care: Tree pruning, trimming, and general forest help.
DIY & Building: Helping us build or repair fences and working on small construction/DIY projects around the farm.
The Vineyards: We have our own vineyards which require special care!
September: This is a very exciting and busy time for the grape harvest.
Winter/Spring: Following the harvest, we focus on vine pruning and preparing the plants for the next season.
General Maintenance: Helping with whatever the farm and the forest need to stay healthy and tidy.
We don’t expect you to be an expert in everything, but a "can-do" attitude and a love for working with your hands are essential!
