Two years ago I bought a small farm in the mountains of Asturias, Spain. My project here is to build a sustainable way of living, thinking about permaculture, and the planet and our responsibility to it. I also envisage it as being a safe rural space for queer people who wish to share and learn with me, but all good people who appreciate the project are welcome. I am non-judgmental and celebrate people who enjoy hard work and fun.I am always hoping to learn more about organic gardening and permaculture, yoga, meditation, DIY, dry-stone walling, animal husbandry - and to listen to other people's stories.
I've been a Workawayer and loved my experience. I learnt a lot, and hope we will both learn more together- that's one of the good things in life! I would love people to give me some advance warning (better not last-minute) and if you commit to a date, to stick to it :) or let me know you can't come.

The farm is in a region full of historical interest, beautiful villages, wild mountains, great hiking and climbing, incredible flora and fauna, cave paintings, local parties, endless quiet days. There is always something to do, even when we're not sharing and improving on the farm. I value people with vision and a lust for life, with the ability to share their ideas. It's not a didactic project so you'd need to be ready to be proactive and open. For those queer people who have struggled to find a space in urban lifestyles and feel this could be the relief they need, you are most welcome - consider this a safe space for you. I have lived lots of lives and worked lots of jobs, including academia (my PhD was in 1970s Spanish poetry) and a dog food factory. My academic interest was poetry and mental health, so there's lots of wellness practicing going on and welcomed here! I'm a writer of poetry, creative non-fiction and reviews. I'm also Digital Head of Studies at a successful language academy, and am happy to exchange my knowledge of English (and Spanish) with other languages.
NB this is a gay/queer-friendly space
*** I am currently really interested in volunteers who have building skills, such as plastering, re-tiling roofs, flooring, etc ***
I have a three-bedroom house with open fireplace which is a really comfy place to be. There's an enormous, watertight barn that we have cleared and divided up into stables, where we store wood (this is a constant collecting task!), and store processed fruit and vegetables. There's a two-storey building that gives out into a large kitchen garden. The upper floor is a meditation/yoga/writing shrine, a place of great peace and contemplation. Below we have built no dig/dig beds (including the witchstar bed, with its central point of love and life the apple tree) and fenced off some of it for sheep and a donkey, who are arriving soon. We have created a beautiful kitchen garden and practice permaculture and we reuse everything. The chickens are safely housed in their coop - and Lío the enormous guard puppy and his big little brother, rescue dog Simba, pretend to guard them. I am looking for people who want to learn with me, and any DIY skills would be welcome. I welcome new ideas and love developing and evolving the ones I've already had, so it's a listening project too. A few hours a day of relaxing work (in all weathers) is all part of the meditation. In autumn, winter and spring I work full time from home.
I am chilled out but I'm not interested in free holidayers. Come with your passion and your strong ideas about the project!

You'd have your own room in my lovely little house, and we'd share the kitchen, bathroom and sitting room. There's a third bedroom that could or can be anything, including a studio of some description, if you need that space. I supply the food and love to cook. Good cooks are more than welcome. I don't currently run a strictly vegetarian or vegan household. My own space is valuable to me, and I will respect yours. But we will be here together and company is a pleasure. It's basic but beautiful here.
Teverga is the place to be for climbing, hiking etc. There's good skiing round here when it snows, apparently. There are lots of summer tourists and the local town is 7k from the farm, with shops and restaurants and even - I can't confirm this but was told in awed tones - a nightclub. It's difficult to eat badly round here, but Teverga is not particularly vegetarian-friendly. The capital, Oviedo, is 45 minutes away by bus/car. It's a great place to visit, and the beach is then not far away. The Asturian coastline is magical.
NB I don't currently have a car so you will need to walk the 6k to the farm from the bus stop. I do it most days - it's all part of the meditation en route to destination. If you come with a car, you'll be much prized!
