Description
"It takes a village." This idiom has been an important idea in my mind for 20 years and I have finally started a village for myself and my family (blood family and chosen family). Radically queer-friendly and intersectional.
My name is Jéo. I have a MSC in Soil Science and Global Change with a concentration in Biogeochemistry, a Permaculture Design Certificate, and a love of education and learning. I have worked on some projects previously, but this will be my first to start and handle on my own. This is a project that uses and trusts science. We will be combining modern best practices with effective and experimental older practices like interplanting, alley cropping, and soil regeneration.
The project has just begun (as of 06.02.2025) and there is lots to do. My goal is grow a little slice of heaven. My farming style is focused on perennials, fresh foods, and ferments. Plans will be constantly evolving and I am looking for input. -

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
Cultural and informational exchange is humanity's greatest strength and can get us from where we are to where we want to be. I offer English, food and stories from around the world, boardgames and TTRPG (like Dungeons and Dragons), education on the topics of soil, chemistry, biology, and physics, film exchange, ballroom dancing, amateur haircuts, and loud laughter.
I am hoping to learn more about botany, languages (especially Portuguese), food, dancing, the Viola, art, animals, and more of the world and its peoples.
Guests are family while you're here, I'd love to see and hang out frequently, help together on projects, and learn together. -

Aide
Some possible help could involve, but is not limited to: gardening and clearing, natural building, light carpentry, planning, living and cooking, exploration and cartography, hydrology, and animal care. There is also plenty of manual tasks to be done, if none of these are of interest to you.
There are many projects that I would like to do, but I am only one person and cannot get to them all. A few specific projects aimed at aesthetics are; moon gates, bridges over streams and swales, the Shipwreck garden, natural building, and fungiculture statuary. -

I am working hard to learn Portuguese; help and practice is much appreciated. -
Hébergement
I have three extra bedrooms and an indoor (unfurnished) 'cave.' There are many hectares on which to camp, though you would need to bring your own gear.
Wifi and utilities are strong. Water is from year-round springs and the irrigation tank is my pool.
Hot water is good. Kitchen is beautiful with a gas stove, so cooking is easy. Food; I like to share meals. I would prefer if we cooked and ate together. I eat everything, but can eat and cook for most restrictions. Gluten-free and strict vegan is the most difficult. Lovers of spicy food are most welcome.
There are no base fees. There may be optional fees to be negotiated as needed; such as repeated off-schedule taxi services, very particular dietary requirements, or significant education on topics unrelated to the help we are doing.
Meals are included, of course. I normally cook breakfast and dinner with a meal in-between being a sandwiches or other easy-to-grab foods. Please specify any dietary restrictions when making a request. -
Autres infos...
The town of Cabeceiras da Basto is about 10 min by car. There is a bus nearby and I have a car to drive for pickups and drop-offs. Peneda-Geres is about an hour away, as is Porto and Braga.
