    Description

Adventure seekers, hard workers and all round amazing people needed!

We are an outdoor adventure company, specializing in whitewater rafting, rock climbing and sustainable eco-education. We operate a large campsite in beautiful Gopeng, Perak, and are looking for members to join our amazing volunteer team to help run it. We need people who love the outdoors, are happy to get their hands dirty, and want to experience authentic village life in a tight-nit community.

Our volunteer program has been operating since March 2017, and we are looking for big, amazing personalities to come and help us craft it. In addition to the regular maintenance, housekeeping/ cleaning and gardening; there are opportunities to help with construction, administrative tasks and potentially our adventure sports. Helping us is also one of the best opportunities to experience a truly local, kampung (village) side of Malaysia, not often accessible to foreigners. We have close ties with the community, and most of our Helpers come from the surrounding villages. We want to give back to people who come to help us and so we try to provide a one of a kind experience for volunteers. Not only will you get to live right in the jungle and interact with locals, we are also happy and keen to get our volunteers involved in our adventure programs. Sometimes, boring tasks needs to be done but if we get an above and beyond commitment from you, we want to give an above and beyond experience back. We are building a medium sized, inclusive, open minded and hard working volunteer group so if this sounds like you please drop us a line :)

Gopeng is a booming outdoor adventure destination for South-East Asia and we are proud to say that we are the leading outdoor company in the area. We welcome school groups, companies, families, friends, travellers from Malaysia and around the world. Our most popular activities are white water rafting, high ropes activities, caving (two beautiful caves in our area), waterfall abseiling and more. Most importantly we not only focus on the adventure activities but also on outdoor learning, nature and the heritage and rich history of the area. Much of Malaysia struggles to adopt and implement sustainable practices and a critical part of our mission is to help educate and exemplify eco-friendly lifestyle and practice in Malaysia. We are, and aim to be, leading the way in sustainability in our nature filled country. We believe in learning from any kind of adventure.

Our campsite started in 2008 as a very small place, we had dorms made from greenhouse structures, a small dinning hall, toilets from re-purposed water tanks and a couple of tree houses. A lot changed since the camp opened, but not our care for environment and surroundings. Every building in the camp has it's purpose and special story, insulated walls, tires in the floor and many more. We can tell you all the stories when you get here! Currently the Camp can accommodate 240 people at one time so there is a lots of tasks to be done!

Our campsite is located just near Gopeng, Perak. It is a 2h drive North of Kuala Lumpur, 2 hours South of Penang. The nearest city is Ipoh, which is 30min away. Ipoh has cinemas, hospitals, museums, shopping malls and all the amenities of a city.

There is so much scope and opportunity for helping us that it's hard to contain it all briefly. But here goes :

The minimum stay we require at our campsite is for two weeks. If you stay for just two weeks you will be doing housekeeping and maintenance.

If you stay longer, the first week all of our volunteers will be doing housekeeping and maintenance so we can see your abilities and get to know you better. The objective during the first week is for us to find out what tasks you would be interested in and if they would be suitable for you.

Below there are more details about what kind of help we need:

    (1) Housekeeping (1st & 2nd week always)
We have different types of accommodation, dorms and a couple of different chalets; common areas such as dining hall, bouldering area, Jungle Lounge, office, bathrooms. Also includes managing the cleanness of the fields and trees. Also includes equipment cleaning.

    (2) Maintenance and Construction
As we are a growing business, we have ongoing general construction and maintenance tasks to keep everything working well. Our maintenance and housekeeping teams are from the local village so you will have the opportunity to learn some Malay words as you help alongside them.

    (3) Gardening and Landscaping project (Needed)
Includes watering, fertilising and taking care of the plants. Currently, we have some vegetable crops and a small herb garden. We are open to any ideas for gardening projects!

    (4) Eco, re-purpose, art and DIY projects
Anything from making signage from used materials to making chairs from tires, sinks from pans, making murals and so on. Initiative is very important as well, tell us what you can do!

    (5) Reception and assisting with guests
You will need to talk to people interested in our activities, welcome guests and groups and help with check-in. You will get to be part of the customer experience!

    (6) Assisting with groups (For people staying at least one month and must have prior experience in whitewater raft guiding, in a ropes course or adventure park, or have experience facilitating team building or youth camps - please let us know of your experience)
This involves technical assistance during activities, preparation for programs and activities, briefing, taking pictures. This is only available for the volunteers that plan to stay longer than a month.

    (7) Designer, photographing, video skills.
We are looking for someone with a design or photography background who can photograph activities or create and cut videos.

If you have any other special skills such as the above or maybe some other ones, let us know and we can always see how your skills can be used.

This would involve a 2-3 month temporary position, with an additional training period of at least a month. People with prior experience in outdoor education/instruction, camp counsellors and team-building facilitation will have a preference, but anyone interested is encouraged to apply. Accommodation will be provided and pay will be subject to candidates experience and suitability. We ask for you to come and experience our camp for a couple of weeks to see if you/re the right fit *️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

We are pretty flexible and if you are doing tasks from one of the groups above it doesn't mean that you will be doing only this one thing throughout your stay.

Once you arrive in the campsite we will brief you on the house rules but there are some that have to be highlighted:
No smoking or drinking alcohol in front of clients and only in designated places at camp.

Drunkenness or behaviour that disrespects local culture (eg: public kissing, revealing clothes, etc) or bad work ethic will result in being asked to leave the camp.

There is zero tolerance for any drug use, theft, sexual harassment or other criminal activity. These crimes will be immediately reported to the police and be dealt with by the police.

You must have health insurance, if you don't have any please purchase it for the time you will be staying with us. If you really want to come but need help finding a good health insurance provider, please still email us and mention this.

P.S. Please note we would prefer that your starting date is at least a week ahead of when you contact us for the first time. You can message us but we can't promise that we will be able to accommodate you last minute.

Our staff accommodation is really basic, we use shipping containers re-purposed into cabins with beds inside. Public transport doesn't reach our camp, however, you can take a bus to Ipoh/Kampar from the main street. During the day you could walk to the main street, call a taxi or find someone who can drop you at our camp. From Ipoh, there are some Grab drivers who you can call. There is a train station in Kampar, the train to Kuala Lumpur takes 2h. In Gopeng town there is a bus station with buses going to Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and even direct to KLIA airport.
Cameron Highlands is quite close to Gopeng, Penang is only 2-3h away and Ipoh only 30min away. Ipoh is one of the biggest cities in Malaysia, has many malls, heritage sites, good white coffee, and fantastic food.

More things around our camp are Kellie's Castle, Gaharu Tea Valley and Gopeng town which is not a very vibrant place but has a couple of heritage stops, some restaurants and a market.
