    Description

We are a mixed Canadian-Italian family with a young daughter, living in a beautiful small village in southern Italy. It is in the middle of the countryside with lots of fresh local food and an authentic and unique local culture, filled with history, dialect, and beauty. There are lots of nearby castles and archeological sites, and we have a stunning view of the nearby mountain Monte Vulture - an inactive volcano with two lakes in the crater and endless kilometres of hiking trails through the old growth forest. When not traveling, we are in the process of acquiring an ancient structure next to our house to renovate and restore, and my husband tends to his family olive grove. In the next year we hope to start nurturing a small garden on our balcony plus find a piece of land for a bigger veggie garden. We live in the historic city centre, a short walk from small stores, the local caffè and piazza, and the local butcher and milk/cheese shop, and there is a veggie stand with local food a few times a week.

We would love to share and learn each other's languages, especially exposing our toddler to this. We speak a mix of English and Italian at home, and there are many locals who can introduce you to the dialect (which includes a strange mix of Italian, Greek, Arabic, and totally unique aspects). We would love to learn some of yours!

We also love to cook and cook both Canadian food, traditional Italian food, and some fusion with a lot of Arabic and Asian influences. Personally I am happy to provide some lessons in basics of Italian cooking and traditional recipes (though a lot of mine I learned from a nonna in Tuscany and an uncle from Rome, so they are more traditional from those areas). We would love to learn some of your recipes and are happy to do a trip to the city with international stores if you need special ingredients.

We also enjoy going on adventures and will be happy to go explore local sites during free time.

We are hoping to find help with improving the newly acquired palazzo and possibly bringing back to life some of the treasures that have been left inside by the former owners (the local noble family). Obviously we would like help only with general tasks, not with any specialized or risky work. We would also appreciate someone who would like to help in the countryside with the olive grove and garden. This is a family project, not a business, and we are happy to share some olive oil with you if you come at harvest time. Finally, we would appreciate a hand with our toddler while we work on these projects. This would be ideal for a couple, where one wants to hang out with a toddler and the other wants to take on a bit of the more physical tasks (or who want to alternate between these roles).

I will be accompanying whoever helps with our little one, though I will likely need to work on the computer some of the time. I can help someone learn the ropes though and learn some of the Montessori approach we take to raising an independent and happy munchkin.

My husband will be accompanying in the physical tasks. He has many years experience in the construction fields and has a passion for teaching and mentoring. He is new to the agriculture part and will often be accompanied by cousins and uncles who are helping him (and in turn, you) learn the ropes.

We have a bedroom with a double bed and a dresser on the upstairs floor, with a view of the mountain and countryside. There is a shared bathroom on the main floor. We will cook for you during your stay, and would love if you could chip in with washing dishes or cooking meals for everyone occasionally.

As we have a young toddler, we prefer that you don't bring guests over or make too much noise if arriving home late. We usually all have a rest after lunch for a few hours and would prefer reasonable quiet during that time too.
