Here at our farm we follow Bio Cyclical growth and live with respect for the environment and biodiversity protection.
We are an olive grove at the foothills of Hymettus mountain, 30km away from Athens city center, and we live peacefully with our chicken, dogs, donkeys and cat. Even though not 'purists' we are mainly vegetarian.
Art is in everything we do; it is important for us to work with love and knowledge while we try to exert the qualities of our olive oil: observation is one of our important key words!
Though the activity is still at its beginning, many things have been done or are in progress, and we have plenty of other projects for the future.
We plan to build a new vegetable garden, using companion planting (for biodiversity and pest control), compost (with our kitchen wastes, chicken + donkey manure and grass cuttings), natural protection against harmful insects and diseases, and collecting and saving of seeds. To that end, we need to connect our irrigation system because, whilst we consciously do not irrigate the olive trees, we need to water our vegetable garden and our fence trees and plants in order to stimulate their growth.
The olive grove produces xx fine virgin olive oil and the trees are looked after according to instruction by ΔΗΩ, our Certifying Controller Agency.
The place had not been used for a long time so now it needs some adjustments, like adding storing sheds and a new chicken coop, painting, shutters and other, fixing things, cleaning and always tidying up.
At the moment the Farm opens at 6:30' a.m. and closes at 9:30' p.m.. Here is some practical advice to consider:
You can either
- work 3 hrs in the morning- say till 9:30, and then 2 hrs in the afternoon from 19-21:30, or
- work 2 hrs in the morning one hr at lunch time and 2 more hours in the evening, or
- depending on your fellow workawayers, you can also work alternating days/weeks morning/evening shifts, or
- you could work 7 days in a row and take 4 days off the week after (outside the farm), depending on fellow w/a's plans, etc etc.
But, first, could you please write to us what it is you think you can be of help here with vis a vi the content of our profile; for one, we are not 'teachers', we follow the flow, do the 'routine' qualitatively, on our own if need be
Also: people certainly do not come here to work as some kind of a 'task force', however we are not 'free camp' either: order, preparation and coordination are of utmost importance in any farm that feeds and waters animals.
To tolerate differences in ideas, in age, nationality, worldview, or even religious or other structures is not as easy in practice as it is in theory; therefore, when here with us at the farm please try to let go of any preconceptions of how things should be-- even the ones you don't have :)) , and kindly focus on what we truly need your help for, each time.
Self-organizing according to hand overs by previous w/awayers is an A+
When it comes to couples (or just friends) the avoidance of 'cliquing' is highly recommended, we don't like it at all, we think it is contrary to the w/away concept on the whole: after all you come here to face the challenges of more or less 'stranger-situations' of different cultures and approaches; especially when it is your first time in Greece and for others not, it is much appreciated when any type of couples work separately between them and join others as their own persons.
For people who come here to learn how olives are grown: it would be wonderful to accentuate the importance of observation by 'doing nothing'; this is to say nothing else :) so as to prepare for and 'participate' in -- the sunrise, the sunset, the animals' feeds, watering and grooming, the weather reports of each 'next day', maybe a consistent and 'open to all' diary.. there are so many things that can keep you interested and us relaxed ;)
Therefore, if you feel like you can bring something to what we do by an efficient and cooperative presence, and if you believe that we can contribute to your learning process in a sharing and caring connection, we would be glad to hear from you.
We welcome volunteers from all over the world and a good common ground of understanding is important;
so please DO LET US KNOW IN ADVANCE IF YOU ARE JUST TRAVELLERS WHO WANT TO STOP OVER, USE OUR FACILITIES IN FULL(!) FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS OR SO, ONLY TO TAKE OFF AGAIN! If there is space we might feel like taking you in; however, we very recently had ...travelers do a 'stunt' on us, so UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, sorry, NO DRIVE THRU'S ;)
Because this is not only totally unacceptable and tactless behavior, but it is also unfair to real volunteers;
we have been therefore FORCED to ask for your flight details inbound and outbound of Greece, and the full true story and intention about coming here, in the same way we do ourselves, and alongside spend our valuable time and efforts in order to host you.
*** Before writing to us, kindly take note of the following regarding COVID as it looks very much likely that COVID IS NOT HARMLESS, even if only mildly infected ***
We are committed to continue our cycle, and would welcome anyone interested to help us here on the farm but we kindly ask workawayers to acknowledge that if they are here, they are to 'socialize' according to public health recommendations by the Greek Ministry of Social Health with no alternative theory and/or interpretation.
That is to say, we are S T I L L VERY SERIOUS about
a. respecting social distancing (stay at at least one meter and a half away from each other especially upon arrival),
b. following daily hygiene and sanitary disinfection protocols
c. wearing masks everywhere outside the farm.
d. about you to have been by this time fully vaccinated.
Every other new instruction announced by the Greek Ministry of Social Health will be followed by the book with no exception, and will not be contested on any philosophical, ideological or for that matter, other type of grounds.
We surely don't like the situation ourselves, but it is just how things still are for the moment with COVID D- mutation not regressing, on the contrary, so we kindly ask you to be considerate and practice "tight" rather than "relaxed" behavior, even if vaccinated.
It is because all of the above, we WILL NOT not to host 'come and go" workawayer travellers: to be able to commit for at least a full period of 1 month, to integrate and to appreciate our efforts, care, and in the end help with what we are indeed about, would be really great!
At this stage we prefer workawayers who come with other w/a Hosts' positive feedback.
Thank you very much for your kind cooperation ;)
(*) Thur. 7.29.2021: COVID ratio in Greece is rising big and by the day at the moment due to 'COVID mutation D'; we have had new (local) lockdowns that may render travel more difficult.

The farm is located next to Paiania, at the foothills of Hymettus mountain, where you can enjoy great hikes.
Also, Athens is accessible by public transport from the farm and if you are drivers there are many archaeological sites nearby, like Cape Sounion (the temple of Poseidon), the temple of Artemis in Vravrona, and nice places to visit: Marathon, Rafina, Porto Rafti, etc.
Here you can learn about biocyclical agriculture and the process of producing high quality olive oil.
You will also learn how to take care of the animals and to listen to their needs. You might even be able to attend dog training lessons with professionals.
Of course, you will learn how to cook very nice (vegetarian/vegan) Greek dishes!
If you need to smoke please do not do so inside the house, neither on the farm; be respectful of the non-smokers and dont impose yourselves upon them, make sure cigarette buds end up in ashtrays at all times.
Depending on the period and availability you can either be accommodated inside a house or in tents outside (bringing your own). Again, smoking is strictly forbidden inside or outside your tents. Thank you.
We are looking for volunteers to help us with the maintenance of the place (minor repairs, cleaning of the outdoor areas and taking care of the plants) and the routine of the farm (feeding the animals and cleaning their space).
Animals are early risers, so they also expect you to be one! We usually work at sunrise for the morning routine and at sunset we close the farm with the evening routine. In between we will help you plan other activities and your free time.
Note that the summer routine (June through to September, starts at about 6:30am. and closes at about 9:30 in the evening, with usually not much activity between midday and 6:30 in the afternoon, depending on temperatures.
Please, if you have special skills and have any idea of how you could help us, that we have not thought about, don’t hesitate to tell us. We also like it if, upon your application for staying with us, you ask questions regarding all the above.
In our view, sincere learners need at least a month to understand and to adapt to what we are about; the first week is demanding for people who have no agricultural life experience (here there is no 'garden') and the observation of nature is necessary in order to understand it, you will need to devote time in order to serve nature before it serves you; here, and regardless of your character, ideas and views, it is essential that you try learn 'at any cost', try to create and follow your own 'flow'- but 'flow' it should be; nature's gifts should never be taken for granted.
An independent little house is available for volunteers (2 bedrooms - 1 double bed and 1 with 2 single beds, a bathroom and a kitchen).
The farm is located very close to Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos), easily accessible by public transport.
