    Description

    Cayo Quemado, Río Dulce

Originally from Belgium, I arrived in Livingston with my boat during the pandemic. A few months later, I fell in love with a piece of land along the Río Dulce, between Fronteras (Río Dulce) and Livingston, and decided to settle down.

    🌊 Only accessible by water
The last road connections (cars, buses, or anything with wheels) stop in Río Dulce or Puerto Barrios. From there, you’ll need to travel by boat, lancha, cayuco, kayak… or even a seaplane to reach us. The village is called Cayo Quemado.

Looking toward Río Dulce from the property, you’ll find the Río Dulce National Park on the left and the Chocón Machacas Biotope on the right, with the Golfete just in front. We’re surrounded by water, even though we’re technically connected to the mainland.

    🌱 Wild and preserved nature
There are no roads nearby. This is raw, unspoiled nature. You’ll see incredible birdlife, manatees, otters, iguanas, and of course plenty of fish like Robalo, Palomitos, shrimp, and crabs.

    🏡 A small, self-built world
Our full-time guardian and skilled carpenter, Pedro, lives here on his own. He built both his house and ours with the help of several local muchachos.

Also living here is Fidel, our loyal dog, whom we found in Cuba during our travels. He’s been part of the family ever since.

    🛠️ Help is always welcome
We’re constantly improving, repairing, or building, so an extra pair of hands is always appreciated. Whether it’s in the garden, doing DIY projects, or helping in the kitchen — especially since we love good food — there’s always something meaningful to do.

This is a fisherman village, and probably one of the rare and last places in the world that is far away from roads.
Fishing is the activity of the locals ...
so, we do catch and eat local shrimps when it's the season…
I like to meet and exchange about ideas, food, travels, news, art, music, movies, series and etc...
Since one year or so we are connected with Starlink.
The water has all year long nearly a perfect temperature and normally its not salted as we are just far enough from the sea ...

    Aide

I would be very happy to invite somebody (male or female) to join me giving us a helping hand as I'am doing a lot of stuff myself.
I could also use somebody who likes to cook.
We’re starting to make our own veggie / fruit garden where a helping hand could be useful.

I have no experience about language exchange but totally open as I would like to learn more Spanish, I planned to go to Antigua for a few weeks but never took the time as I'am a little bit to busy here in Rio Dulce.

    Hébergement

We made 2 very nice rooms with private bathroom for my daughters that can be used for guests as my daughters are living in Europe.
We eat 2 times a day all together, the evening we are light eaters but there’s food for people with appetites.
