I stayed with Candy and James for about a week. They have a beautiful and quiet place where I helped mostly with gardening and planting olive trees.
They were really very kind and good to me, made me feel very comfortable and I learned a lot from the daily tasks on the property.
A special mention for the lunches and dinners that we all shared

I spent a lovely week with James and Candy and this was honestly one of my best Workaway experiences so far! They were so sweet and welcoming that I felt at home immediately and was really sad in the end that I was on quite a strict time schedule that did not allow me to stay longer.

Both Candy and James were always very keen to make sure I did a job I liked and working hours were very flexible. From olive picking over planting bushes, reorganising the greenhouse for winter, cleaning the facade and windows to cooking some of Candy's excellent recipes it is very hard to pick a favourite :)
We took all the meals together and in the evening we often got lost in long conversations over a glass of wine. As the working hours were mostly in the morning the was a lot of time for free time activities. I went on my first pyrenee hike and took a bike trip to the village Eus closeby. Also James and Candy took me to visit Villefranche-de-Conflent one day. But in the end no matter where I went - the nicest view in the area is right at the house's terrace.

… read more always quick to find out what constellations and planets can be seen in the sky on each evening. The view from the house is spectacular, and I really enjoyed going hiking and cycling around the mountains.

What a wonderful two weeks! Candy is such a fantastic and kind lady, our stay with her was absolutely perfect.
The work was very varied, and never very difficult. It was very satisfying to be able to help Candy around the garden and house, every day was different. In particular we really enjoyed learning to prune the olive trees and strim the
… read more weeds. When it was too hot to work outside we did little tasks in the house and enjoyed the sunshine by the pool.The house is gorgeous and the view of Canigou from the porch was perfect. We really appreciated having our own space in the studio but also being able to share meal times with Candy. On our days off Candy helped us plan lovely days out, recommending local towns to explore. We also had the chance to hike Canigou which was just unforgettable. In the evenings we had delicious meals and Candy was such fantastic company.

Candy and James were both very welcoming and made me feel like part of the family. Vandy is a great cook and always made an effort to make lovely meals.
They live in a beautiful area with superb views of Mount Canigou.

I stayed with Candy and James for a month in July, which flew like it was only a week. What a sweet couple, although I met James only briefly as he was on the boat when I arrived. For the most part, I spent my days with Candy, who is such a warmhearted person, sharing their life stories with me; it felt like I've known her for a long time. I've
… read more also had the pleasure to meet some of their family members from England, who are just as lovely.
For the work, there was more of it (in the garden, in the house, the pool, the rest of the property) than there were hours in a day. And Candy was very flexible to let me choose what I'd like to focus on and when, as the mid-day heat can be unbearable in the summer. Since the garden is top priority, I helped there mostly: preparing the soil, digging, making space for more crops, transplanting, weeding, fencing, placing nets over the newly planted vegies, pruning, dismantling a small greenhouse, managing and maintaining the watering system. My favourite part is harvesting, which is not really work! Then, when it's too hot to work outside, I helped tidy up inside the house and preparing stuff in the kitchen. I helped with the maintenance of the pool a bit and did what I could there.
Thank you, Candy and James for opening your beautiful home to me. Yours must be the best view of the Canigou! I very much enjoyed my stay and the beautiful walks nearby with the amazing scenery.
Candy, I very much appreciate your hospitality and consideration while I was there, from making sure I'm most comfortable in my accommodation to ensuring that I had plenty of space and privacy, taking me to nearby sights, preparing gourmet food. Thank you for your generosity and flexibility in accommodating my "plans" for the days off. Candy shared and showed me a lot of things, like cooking different dishes, recipes, drying chili and making my own chili powder with it (even got a take home bottle!), how to use different tools and how to do things efficiently in the garden. We've stayed with Candy & James for almost 2 months. For us, everything in this Workaway was perfect!
* There are many projects going on in and around the house. Most tasks are not very hard or physically tiring, and there's plenty of work, which allows you to vary between tasks. We would have loved to do some construction work in the studio,
… read more but on the other hand we were very lucky that we have been able to work outside in the garden (olives, vegetables) until mid November. The weather was still great.
* The setting of the house is absolutely picture-perfect. Every day it felt like a privilege to live and work here.
On days off there's plenty to do around Prades and in the region. We went to beautiful villages nearby, but also to the coast and to the city of Perpignan. The 1 euro bus covers the whole region, which is ideally. One of our highlights was definitely the hike up to peak Canigou.
* Candy & James are very warmhearted, generous, welcoming and easygoing people. Candy cooks fantastic meals, and we spent many nights chatting about a million different subjects.
Thank you Candy & James for welcoming us into your beautiful house and into your lives. For making us feel at home. For making us feel as 'family'.
