    Description

    Hi Workawayers

Well what can we say about us, We are Alex, Sandra and Molly,(English) living on a farm situated 30km north of Castelo Branco in a village called Sao Vicente da Beira
We live right next to a beautiful lake (our profile picture) which is great for relaxing, fishing and generally chilling out.
We have 32 acres of land, mainly terraces, large olive groves ( producing up to 10 tonnes of olives a year) fruit trees, cork oak trees, all situated at the bottom of the Gardunha Mountains which you can see from our farm.
We haven't had an easy time of it, in the 6 years we have been here, we had money stolen by a builder, who also left our home unfinished.
We had the most devastating fire destroy our farm in 2019, we lost hundreds of trees, many tools and equipment including all our possessions from the uk that were stored in a large van as our home was unfinished. Plus way too many other problems along the way.......

The time has come to ask you lovely workawayers for your help!!
We are looking for motivated people who would like to come and muck in and help us get the farm and buildings back to their original beauty.
We won't work you to death! And you will hopefully enjoy your time here and learn a few skills.

The fire caused all of the irrigation system to melt, which we need to replace, fencing has been burnt, many trees destroyed, some have come back to life but many now need to be cut down.
The vegetable patch and poly-tunnel were destroyed and we would love to get this back up and running.
The fire planes dropped water and smashed the roof and tiles on one of our barns, so again a helping hand would be great as that all needs to be replaced.

We have lots of small and larger jobs to get us back up and running again and now we have a herd of 38 licenced milking goats so we have many things to rebuild, like a hay store and other shelters. Why not come and help out building the new goat barn and milking parlour.

We also are hoping to rebuild our outdoor eating area, we want to extend it and replace the roof. It already has a traditional Portuguese granite bread oven which we regularly use, but it is looking very tired and we would love to make the space somewhere special to relax, eat and enjoy a glass of wine or two, somewhere relaxing to be with friends and of course workawayers!!!

Eventually we would like to finish our home! Its comfortable and dry with mains electric, good wifi , running water but it is far from finished, so if you have any trade skills that would be amazing!...... We have a fully working bathroom and hot shower also available.

Thanks for checking us out and if you have any questions please send us a message.

You will learn how to live the Portuguese way! growing organic food to eat, animal care, tree pruning, olive harvesting, stone wall rebuilding, fencing, how to use tools and equipment (if you want to learn to use them), most importantly you'll learn to love life on our little piece of Portuguese Paradise and enjoy sun, wild life and peace and quiet. but hopefully you'll have some fun and enjoy your time here.
The farm has over 500 olive trees many of them very old but still produce great virgin olive oil. over 170 fruit and nut trees including 10 huge chestnut trees that give wonderful chestnuts. 500 plus cork oak trees and hundreds of other native trees, a eucalyptus forest, hundreds of grape vines some over 70 years old and the vegetables that we grow for ourselves and as animal feed.
we can share what we know and have learned from the locals about running and maintaining the whole farm in the three years we have been here.
From about May onwards we usually do many of the local fairs and 'festas' in the local area where we have our own stall and we serve homemade hamburgers, veggie burgers lots of homemade drinks, cakes and we have are own spit for doing our roast pigs, they are a great event and are very social, a great way to meet the locals and have lots of fun. But due to covid these are all on hold.

Depending on the time of year you visit you would be welcome in November-December to come to the lugar (olive press) on the tractor and trailer as we take our own olives to be pressed, it is a great social experience and often take food and wine to watch your hard work be taken from the trailer and come out as your very own virgin oive oil.

Hopefully we will all make some wonderful memories.

What we would love is for some help getting the farm to how it once was before the terrifying fire destroyed it, help us put our mark on it and hopefully we can all learn something new along the way.
Alex has cleaned most of the farm so mainly the work now is maintaining it and some areas that need a bit more work to finish it off, so it can then just be maintained, strimming cutting grass in the future... its almost there, the hard work is done.
