    PLEASE NOTE: WE ONLY TAKE VOLUNTEERS FOR MINIMUM 1 MONTH STAY — though the work is pretty easy, it takes a little while to get to know all 60 dogs - which is an essential part of the work – and our dynamics! We have a strong sense of commitment to looking after our dogs, so please ensure you read what volunteering with us entails and ask any questions that you might have. Please also be aware that as we have limited space for volunteers, it takes time and effort to get organized and the group routine changes as people come and go.

    We have 60 dogs in total – spread around outside pens, the house and even some of the volunteer rooms, so you might have a furry roomie!

    Our dogs are active and you will need to be prepared to be jumped on (with love of course !), getting dirty (make sure to bring old clothes for the work!), the dogs are really not bothered about fashion !!! As you can imagine with 60 dogs, its not a silent retreat !!, they can be noisy sometimes, and they are very good at singing at some random times of the day, so it may take a few days to acclimatize.

    Some of the work is physical, mainly in regards to cleaning and maintenance og the dog enclosures (they live in packs ranging from 2 to 5 dogs), changing water bowls, walking the dogs and dealing with our compost system.
    We will be very happy to host those with a broad skill set as there is always a lot of maintenance and gardening related work to be done.

    If you are crazy about dogs and love slobbery kisses and cuddles every day then please come to volunteer with us 🤩

    Caring for dogs is an essential part of your visit, so experience is good but a love of animals is more important. Though we can be flexible depending on circumstances, our daily routine (which is shared among everyone) is usually:

    - letting them out (in the summer, we do a dog walk before that, to avoid the heat)
    - cleaning the areas and feeding the dogs in the morning;
    - rotating the house dogs in the garden
    - checking on them in the afternoon, making sure they have water;
    - putting them inside the depots to sleep.

    There are also some extra tasks, such as taking dogs to the vets, bathing them, giving treatment to those who need it, basic cleaning in the main house, gardening or maintenance. When dealing with so many dogs it's hard to set specific times for work — apart from the morning work, which is always basically the same (starts at 6am in the summer) during the day we do the tasks in different times.

    Please note that for this kind of work it's essential that you are fully *comfortable with dogs*, specially knowing it's a big group of them! The work also does require a bit of "weight lifting", such as picking up bags of food, dogs, water tanks, helping maintain our compost system and other tasks that occasionally need doing. Our pups are early risers, meaning so are we — work starts when the sun is up, but then that also means we get the main tasks out of the way pretty early!

    We're looking for people that are CRAZY about dogs, that will enjoy spending quality time with them and will be truly dedicated to the work.

    We have welcomed a huge international group of workaway volunteers through the last 6 years and love the multicultural experience! Our main language is English, but one of the hosts also speaks Portuguese and Spanish. We are more than happy to assist in helping improve anyone’s English, so don’t be shy – it is important, however, that you have a good basic understanding of it, enough to learn our safety protocols.

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

    We have 3 double bedrooms for our volunteers (it is usually private - apart from sharing it with a dog -, but on special situations you might need to share it with another volunteer). There is one big shared bathroom. Everyone is welcome in the kitchen and we provide all the food – mostly vegan/vegetarian. During the day, we each prepare our own meals and snacks, but at night we like taking turns to cook (depending on who likes it more) and eat together.

    We are located in Lazio Province, close to the historic town of Cassino, an area rich in history and of course the famous Italian culture with its warmth and welcoming people 🤩 This part of Italy is hugely historic and has the fabulous Monte Cassino perched on the top of the hill… a working monastary well worth a visit! Rome and Naples are just a couple of hours away by train, and the beautiful coast city Gaeta is about an hour drive away. There is an amazing cafe street culture and of course amazing local produce to sample! Surrounded by nature and beautiful mountains the sanctuary has the most amazing setting!
