    Description

Welcome to our Retreat Center, a sanctuary deep in the jungle of San Juanillo that has been built around the beautiful and untouched nature of this land. With 11 casitas to rent, a yoga shala, a plant-based cafe, natural pool to swim in (during the rainy season!) and an abundance of fruit trees and plants around us, this is our jungle paradise.

Please make sure to READ OUR PROFILE FULLY and describe which projects and tasks would be the most suitable for you. You can find what kind of support we are looking for under “HELP” down below. Thank you!

This season (2024) we hope to host beautiful retreats guided by great leaders, however, most of our time and energy here is directed towards creating great experiences for guests coming for short stays. We have 11 casitas and they are offered online to people looking to stay in the area.

There is also a small vegan/vegetarian "Jungle Café" on the property where we create meals for guests, retreats and our local community as well as products for sale in the area and at local organic markets. These products include nut-butters, hummus and tahini. We use as many ingredients from this land as possible.

We love to live quietly and in tune with nature here and would like to share this experience with you in exchange for the skills, work and knowledge that you could offer!

We are currently rebuilding and beginning a lot of new and exciting projects which we need lots of help with!

Over all, we are looking for strong and creative volunteers to help with various projects around the property and the retreat center. For the specific roles, please scroll down to the "HELP" section.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Past volunteers have appreciated the magic of simple living, you can enjoy waking up in a vibrant jungle each morning to the calls of howler monkeys and bird songs.

In your free time, you are encouraged to connect with the abundance of nature around you and with yourself; this is a perfect place to do so.

You can also practice your Spanish with the locals in town/on the beach or with our employee(s) who speak only Spanish.

Another benefit is that you will likely learn different types of Yoga, depending on who is teaching. Our in-house Teacher is a Kundalini Yoga instructor.

Furthermore, you have the opportunity to learn more about sustainable living and building in a forest environment if that's something that interests you.

There's always something to learn here if you come with curiosity and an open mind and eagerness to learn :)

In exchange for 25 hours of work per week, you will have a bed in a shared rustic casita which houses 4 beds
with two bathrooms that's designated for our volunteers. You are also welcome to camp on this land; we can provide sheets if you able to bring your tent and whatever else you might need to sleep comfortably. If you prefer a hammock you can bring that as well.

Please note that we fill the beds in the volunteers dorm on a first come, first serve basis. We do have one tent, one sleeping mat and lots of bedding to lend.

You will receive some basic food as part of your work exchange each week. This includes:
    - chickpeas
    - beans
    - rice
    - lentils
    - salt, pepper and cooking oil
    - bananas
    - papayas
    - cucumber
    - onions
    - lettuce

Anything else you might like, you will have to provide yourself. You will have access to shared cooking equipment and a stove in your casita. You are welcome to use herbs from the land to flavor your dishes and tap water here is safe to drink as it comes from our well :).

We have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a variety of insects here, but they all are friendly. We must remember that this is their home and we are the visitors!

Best volunteer match: non-smoker, grounded, health conscious, with an interest in yoga. We like to have a good time here, but this is not a good fit for someone who likes to party/stay up late on a regular basis.

Perks of the area: we are located 3 km from a very special white sand beach, Playa San Juanillo (located about a 40 min walk...it's also possible to hitchhike!). You can choose to spend your free time here, it is a really beautiful place for swimming, snorkeling, relaxing, and watching sunsets.

There is also a turtle beach that's 6km away where, depending on time and season, you can experience watching turtles laying eggs or the little ones hatching and rushing to the ocean. The closest town of San Juanillo is a small (140 adults) and friendly community that has a few tasty restaurants and a small market. We are also a short drive away from Nosara, a small and vibey surf village with beautiful beaches, surf spots, restaurants and more modern amenities.

NOTE: we recommend bringing the following items with you, as they are very expensive to buy here: bug repellent, shampoo/conditioner, vitamins/supplements, flashlight, sunscreen, and anti-itch creams for bug bites.

GETTING HERE/TRANSPORT: Please arrive during the day, before sundown. If you are coming from San Jose, you will take buses from San Jose --> Santa Cruz --> San Juanillo. Buses leave from San Jose at Station 7/10am (to be confirmed with the station schedule). Monday - Saturday, there is a bus from Santa Cruz to San Juanillo that leaves at 4am, 12:30pm, and 4pm. (Sundays only one bus at 12:30 pm), so plan accordingly. Another option is to take a bus from San Jose to Nosara at station Transnika leaving at 3pm or alternatively take a bus from San Jose to Nikoya leaving at 10am and then from Nikoya to Nosara at 4pm. Once arriving in Nosara you will have to take a tuk tuk/taxi to our retreat center.
