    Description

    Hello, my name is Kamnat.

I am the Director of the school, a free English school designed to teach underprivileged children of all ages. I have been running the school since 2005. We currently have about 200 students and 8 local teachers. English speaking volunteers visit the School to teach students, support the local teachers and also to learn more about Cambodian life. Our home is located at the school itself, and we kindly invite you to stay with us and the other volunteers.

    WHY WORK FOR US?

Government schools teach very little English despite it being fundamental to achieving further education and better career prospects. Teachers then charge a high price for extra English lessons, resulting in unequal access to education.

As a young boy, I worked on my father's farm. I stopped going to school when I was just seven years old because my family could not afford the student fees. However, I was still determined to study again. That's why at the age of sixteen, I became a monk. This allowed me to study every day for the next ten years. Now I am proud to help children who suffer from inequality as I did, by giving them tho tools to build themselves a better future.

You too can help the Project change lives whilst enjoying a wonderfully unique travel experience. The sense of fulfilment from this is both rewarding and heartwarming. The students, teachers, my family and I are very grateful for all of the help we receive from volunteers, which is why we will make your stay as comfortable, exciting and unforgettable as possible.

    Thank You!

    A TYPICAL SCHOOL DAY
Since March 2018 we work with an educational system to provide the children an ongoing learning process. An important
task at our school is to continue and follow the guidelines of such.

    08:30 am– 1:00 pm:
    • Breakfasts will be served at 08:30 though you are not expected to attend. If you wish to sleep in, I will leave snacks on the dining table for when you feel ready to get up.
    • After breakfast, the morning is spent at leisure or as preparation time for the lessons. You may wish to cycle into the city to enjoy some café culture or explore the local sights. Lunch is usually served back at the house before school starts.

    1:00 – 3:00 pm:
    • Students between the ages of 5-13 attend the school for two hours from 1 pm and it is usually the busiest (and noisiest) time of the day. Students are mostly separated by age. The classes have between 10 to 25 students.
    • The volunteer’s job consists in planning and teaching their lessons to the classes. The volunteers who don't feel confident enough yet can start with giving assitance to other volunteers or local teachers.
    • Usually, the volunteers are assisted by the Khmer teachers during this class time because of the young age of the kids. They translate and act as constant contacts for the children.

    3:00 – 4:00 pm:
    • This is free time before the older students arrive.

    3:00 – 7:00 pm:
    • Classes resume at 4 pm for the higher level and older students. There is a huge age range, between 12 and 21 years old, as well as level range.
    • Some classes are still working with a book and learning grammar. Other ones are taking conversation classes to practise speaking and the pronunciation. There are also reading and writing classes. These classes are mostly taught by volunteers. At this time we also offer an basic level class for older students which is assisted by a local volunteer.

    7 pm onward:
    • Another delicious home-cooked meal will be served when school has ended. After dinner, you may relax with the other volunteers and the family. Otherwise, you can enjoy the nightlife in Battambang.

    VOLUNTEERING OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM

The first priority is the teaching itself. Apart from that we are grateful
to evolve the school with the knowledge you can bring in.
In the past former Volunteers got involved, helped out and organized projects in areas such as marketing ( creating a homepage, facebook and Instagram), applying for funds, tourism ( promoting and creating tuk tuk tours to support the school) the educational system (a plan to follow, books, a library)
decorating the school ground ( painting the walls).
