THE HUNGARIAN BORDERS ARE STILL CLOSED AT THIS MOMENT
WE HOPE TO WELCOME VOLUNTEERS AGAIN STARTING IN APRIL
Hi there! My name is Sharon, I'm a Belgian girl who decided to move to Hungary to follow my dreams and start a small exotic animal sanctuary/zoo. And... it worked! Thanks to the help of a lot of people we are an official zoo now and always ready to take in abandonned exotic animals.
This, offcourse, brings us a LOT of work and I can't do it alone. So if you love to work with animals, students, visitors, kids,.. and if you are not affraid to work a lot outside, in a crazy and international team, then please read our discription and contact me if you are really interested to help us out!

Mostly animal lovers can have a benefit of coming here. They can work with some special animals and learn more about them and their daily care. It's not all about cuddling them, but also cleaning their cages and give them (medical) care. They can enjoy this beautiful country named Hungary and explore the nature of Baranya.
🖤 WHAT IS OUR PROJECT?
I first of all want to give some clarity about what we exactly do.
We are a SANCTUARY FOR EXOTIC ANIMALS. This means we give a permanent or temporary home to abandonned pets, illigally traded animals, confiscated exotics and wildlife that can't be released anymore. This means that most of our animals come with a lot of guidelines or need lifelong medical care. Animals with only 3 legs, bad eyes or other phisical deformations are common in our ZOO.
Then why do I call it a ZOO? Very simple. The worldwide definition of a ZOO is a holding of animals, who shows the animals to public for 7 or more day a year, So a Sanctuary is in definition also a ZOO. Calling our place a zoo is just a habbit but we understand the doubts some people had by seeing this, this is why I wanted to point this out.
We also work together with other, big Zoos. We provide place for surplus, but we also help with (genetic) research for the uncommon animal species. As example, we are 1 of the only 2 holdings in Europe who work with Arabian small spotted genets. These animals are offcourse no rescues and live in our zoo to study their behaviours, their genetics and their reproduction. Things you can't see of them in the wild.
We understand that not everyone support zoos (we also don't like all the zoos out there!) and we will always respect that decission. But we also ask respect for our decission to not hate zoos who also breed animals.
So whatever your viewpoint is on the keeping of animals, you are welcome in our zoo. But we ask respect towards us, our collegues and offcourse the other volunteers and students. We are all here because we love animals and we want to work with and for them!
🖤 WHAT WILL VOLUNTEERS DO?
💜 WHEN YOU STAY 2 WEEKS
We want to highlight that most of the jobs for our volunteers are NOT with the animals! But mostly for our guests and students who come here for their education. So the most important jobs during the day are:
✔️ Keeping the area clean: Keep the student house clean, make the beds for new students. General household chores.
✔️ Cooking for the students and volunteers. This is a rotating system so not daily,
✔️ Going on activities with the students and volunteers. All costs for your attendance (ae entrance tickets, lunch,...) will be payed for by us. These activities can include city trips, visits to zoos, musea, escape rooms, laser games,.., hiking in the national parks, going for a swim or horseback riding,....
✔️ Gardening, helping in the zoo and with building new enclosures, etc...
Next to the tasks written above, their will be time to learn how to work with the animals. For this you can join our student groups and help with basic tasks under supervision. We also ask all our students to prepare 1 powerpoint presentation a week about a chosen nature or animal related subject. As a volunteer you will also have the chance to enroll in this and learn lots of new things.
💜 WHEN YOU STAY 3 WEEKS AND LONGER
Volunteers who stay at least 3 weeks will also be able to work more with the animals. It takes some time to learn everything and to get a bond with our animals. So when the stay counts at least 3 weeks you can also:
✔️ Help with the daily animal care. Feeding, giving water, cleaning, medical care, walking the dogs, etc...
✔️ Guide the students during their day. Supervise during the animal care, gardening, etc...
✔️ Guide visitors who visit our center. Since we have a lot of tourists this can be done in English. Sometimes even in their own languages (Dutch, French, German,..).
Just like the volunteers who stay 2 weeks, it will be possible to enroll in our education program and benefit from that. (see above)
🖤 WORKING HOURS
We plan in our volunteers 5 days a week, followed by 2 free days. During the free days you are allowed to stay in the zoo. Meals are also provided during the free days.
Volunteers will work in 2 shifts. From 7am till 12am with a break. And from 5pm till 6pm for dinner. In the free time in between there is the possibility to join our student program to work more with the animals. This is a free choice.
When choosing to work with the animals, we will work more than 5 hours a day!! Animals don't have a clock and need constant care. In very bad (medical) situations we (the staff) work 24/7 to make sure the animals are OK. In these situations we ask help from our volunteers. You are offcourse free to decline, but keep in mind that this is how the day of an animal caretaker goes!
🖤 WHAT WILL VOLUNTEERS GET
✔️ 3 meals a day and offcourse free drinks during the whole day
✔️ Accommodation in the guest house. The rooms are shared with other volunteers and students. There is WIFI, TV, entertainment (books, games, pooltable, etc,..), the possibility to wash your clothes.
✔️ The possibility to meet people from all over the world and enough free time to have a great time.
✔️ A lot of new knowledge about animals and nature.
✔️ A once in a lifetime experience for sure.
✔️ Depending on the lenght of the stay some activities outside of the zoo.
✔️ We arrange transport from Pécs to our center and back.
We are looking for people who ar trustworthy and are very independent. Someone with love for animals and nature and is not affraid to work (a lot).
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to write to us!

As a volunteer you will have your shared room with electricity, WIFI and more. You will share a living room, kitchen and bathroom/toilet with our students who live in the same house. This guest house is located in the area of the sanctuary.
We provide 3 meals a day, also on your days off. Going out or eating something on another location than our zoo is for your own expenses, We eat mostly vegetarian or 'normal', but can provide vegan meals.
We're outside a city, but that doesn't mean you can't go there. At some days we offer transfers to Pécs. Pécs is the 4th biggest city in Hungary and an amazing place for students. You can find anything there. If you want to discover more places in Hungary, you can get a train from Pécs train station to, as example, Budapest or Balaton.

We can host digital nomads, when good rules are set. The work in the sanctuary has our priority, but we are very flexible and ready to discuss a schedule that works for both of us.
We can accept pets if - You can show that they had all their vaccinations and are healthy - They can stay alone during the working hours without tearing down our house - They are friendly towards other animals and people
