Kia ora, travellers!
Haere mai - welcome to my whare (home) in beautiful Honeymoon Valley, surrounded by native rainforest, birds and insects. We built this eco-earth house using local clay from right under our feet. This land used to be just grass, but after 30 years of caring for this whenua, it now has mature trees, orchards, and organic gardens. Life here is peaceful and quiet, perfect for enjoying nature
I am part of the local landcare group, helping protect our native forest, birds, lizards, and insects. We trap predators and remove invasive weeds. You could help with organic/permaculture gardening: vegetables, flowers, herbs, fruit trees, chickens, mowing, brush-cutting, compost-making, maintenance and fixing things (basic carpentry, painting), sewing, cleaning, chopping firewood. I bake bread. I make apple cider vinegar, bottle fruit, jam, chutney, sauerkraut, and collect seeds. The current to-do list includes building a structure in front of two doors to keep the rain out, mostly from recycled roofing iron and bamboo... and an early-spring clean. ;-))
My place is for independent, mature helpers who love working outdoors and don't mind getting their hands dirty. I host people past the Holiday-Working-Visa age. I work at our local kura (school), so some hours you will be home alone (or with other helpers, or family). For 4-5 hours of help per day, you get some days sightseeing, accommodation and meals. If you need gluten-free, extra snacks, or special diet food, please bring some with you.
Opportunities to go sightseeing and to relax are, e.g. 'The famous 'Bush Fairy Dairy' 7 km from my house; beautiful Doubtless Bay beaches 20km; Kaitaia 40km; Cape Reinga 130 km, and many more places. If you have no car, I can take you to and pick you up from Taipa. On your days off, you can have breakfast at my house. We have local cafes, restaurants, bakeries, and markets in our small community that are worth visiting for a meal.
Honeymoon Valley is perfect for exploring bush and bird life. The river is great for swimming. You can borrow my bikes, visit my kura, and learn about Maori culture. For playing music: I have a keyboard, guitar, ukulele, and djembe. I do not play music, but I love singing, dancing, and fitness. I love nature, films, literature, art, and most of all - nature.

Beautiful place! Gerlinde is fabulous person and great host! We spent 5 days in lovely "earth house", did different interesting tasks. It was great opportunity to know a lot about building and gardening in NZ.

Claudia has done a great deal of housework, performing weekly cleaning with a smile! She did loads of work in the garden, weeding, mulching.... and Claudia baked us afternoon tea treats.... yum yum yumiest rhubarb tart! Cheers for all your further travels!

More than excellent! Nicolas shared his tool skills and got highly involved in upgrading my green roof. He worked 'overtime' to beat the rain and he managed to keep up with the kiwi slang on the building site. He did crucial work to keep the project afloat. Dennis is a very fit young man, ready to do any work. He is learning English very fast and basically understands everything. He is strong and able to do any gardening/ fire wood job, and also does house work. That's what he mainly did at my place and he was a pleasure to have around.

We stayed one week with Gerlinde and Buddy the dog. We had a great time eating great organic food, having long talks about many things. She's great company. Her plae is a bit out of the way, but really peaceful and surrounded by beautiful treks. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Hope to see you in Mexico some day!

We stayed at Gerlindes house for a little over a week, we liked our stay in an 'earth house'. We worked outside in the garden and cutting the firewood and cleaning the house. We also helped making jam and enjoyed cooking on a woodburning stove.
