PLEASE NOTE: We require a MINIMUM STAY OF 12 WEEKS and applicants to be at least 21 years old. Please do not message us if you cannot commit to at least that, or you are under 21. Mahalo.

Aloha! Thanks for your interest in staying with us. Located on the Big Island of Hawaii in beautiful Naalehu, BIG ISLAND FARM SANCTUARY is a 25-acre, off-grid, animal rescue, offering a life of love and happiness to farmed and feral animals in need of sanctuary. Through interaction and education, we help people learn the truth about animal agriculture, make a meaningful connection with the animals we commonly call food, and show people how they can help stop the needless suffering of animals and the devastation to our planet, all while improving their own health. Big Island Farm Sanctuary is currently home to 100+ farmed-animals including cows, goats, sheep, pigs, turkeys, chickens, dogs, and cats.

While you will be able to explore Hawaii and all its wonder during your stay, we are specifically looking for true animal-lovers who would be content spending a fair amount of their free time bonding with our animals, more than people who want to do minimal work at the sanctuary just to be in Hawaii.

We are looking for hard-working, self-motivated people to fill our part-time live-in animal care positions and assist with the daily animal care, farm maintenance, and weekly sanctuary tours. While experience is a plus, we will train the right person.
We are looking for a commitment of at least three months so that you have time to really connect with the animals and become fluent at the job you'll be doing. Because of all the training that goes into this position, and the time it takes to connect with the people and animals and get into a rhythm, we will not accept anyone who can’t commit to a minimum of 12 weeks. Please do not contact us if you can’t stay for that long.

Responsibilities will include feeding the animals per their feeding schedule, maintaining pasture fencing, cleaning shelters and many other aspects of animal care and farm maintenance. You will also be required to work on tour days (Sunday) and help in whatever capacity is needed on those days. You should LOVE spending time with animals and helping them learn to love and trust humans!
The farm work is physically demanding (lots of walking and moderately heavy lifting {up to 50 lbs}). You WILL get sweaty and dirty! There will be times when one or both of us are off property for work or other reasons, so you will need to be able to work independently, but also as a team, as well as take direction from a supervisor.

Each workawayer will have their own bunk in a room of four. Housing is separate from the sanctuary and about 20 minutes away in Naalehu.

Our sanctuary property is just minutes from South Point and Green Sand Beach- two popular tourist attractions. There are two small neighboring towns (Ocean View and Naalehu) that include grocery stores, coffee shops, a few restaurants, gift shops, and laundromats (we do have on-site laundry accommodations you are welcome to use {just provide your own laundry soap}). We are also happy to make suggestions of things to do and places to visit during your free time.

PLEASE NOTE: The sanctuary is located in South Point and is known for it's wind. Some days it's a light breeze, some days it's absolutely ruthless, most days it's somewhere in between. Wind in a farm setting means dirt and dust flying around. We also have spiders, small scorpions, centipedes, lizards, geckos, mice and rats. It's not like there are a TON of them, but they do exist and you will see them from time to time while living here.

We will provide a plant-based dinner six nights a week. All other food you consume will be your responsibility and will be one of the few costs you have while here. We do require that, out of respect for the animals living here, you follow a plant-based diet while here (no consuming meat, eggs or dairy).

Not vegan? That's okay! We warmly welcome anyone willing to be open-minded to living a vegan lifestyle while here, and learning all the ways it benefits the animals, the environment and even your own health. We are happy to share menu ideas and help you in any way necessary. Our nearby grocery stores have some vegan options available and our bigger towns (Kona and Hilo) have plenty of places to buy vegan food.

We have a vehicle available for you to use for off-property chores as well as for a weekly activity and/or trip to the store. If you want to have a car more often, we recommend looking into a rental car. A valid drivers license is required for this position. You are responsible for fuel costs for personal use of the vehicle.

Due to living in a high-risk fire zone, there is no smoking of any kind allowed at the sanctuary.

We own a shave ice business and hot dog stand that you may be able to work at, on your days off, to earn extra income. There are also several businesses nearby that you may be able to work for- understanding that your sanctuary schedule comes first.
