Description
Kalimera! We are Kj and Debs and we live on the rugged south coast of Crete with our 8 rescue dogs and we are looking for helping hands to work in our garden from May 21 to June 9, 2025.
Our house is located 200m from Dermatos beach on the Libyan sea - a peaceful, remote location, surrounded by olive groves and backed by the Lassithi mountains. The work will be outdoor physical help such as clearing the land, weeding, digging, planting, and simple DIY such as varnishing, painting etc. We ask for 25 hours per week in return for meals and accommodation.
Accommodation is either a twin room in the garden sharing the house facilities or an apartment in the nearby village shared with other volunteers.
Only dog lovers need apply as our dogs are free to run and play in the fenced garden and they sleep on the terrace or in the house!
Work starts at 9 and we break for coffee and snacks mid morning. A freshly prepared, home cooked lunch at 2 marks the end of your volunteering day. The rest of the day is your own for relaxing, exploring or maybe enjoying a dip in the pool or chilling on the nearby beach before dinner.
Locally we have 2 villages nearby (Tsoutsouros 3.5 kms, Kastri-Keratokambos 5 kms) with seasonal tavernas, beach bars and year-round minimarkets selling basic groceries.
This area of Crete is undiscovered and very beautiful – an ideal place for nature lovers and beachcombers! There are many lovely walks and beaches to discover in our area however please note that it is very quiet with no nightlife and no public transport.
A driving licence valid for driving manual cars in Greece would be useful. Bikes can be rented locally.

Accommodation is in a self contained room in the garden with 2 beds or a shared apartment in the nearby village. We also have space for campervans to park up close to hook ups for water & electrics. There is a Workaway terrace where you can relax with a table and chairs, hammocks, outside shower, sink, fridge, and kettle. The house bathroom is shared with volunteers.

Cool off by taking a refreshing dip in our pool or stroll down to the beach just a few minutes walk away. There are deserted pebble beaches suitable for swimming and beachcombing within walking distance and sandy beaches a couple of kms away. There are some beautiful walks/hikes and impressive gorges for exploring in the area. We are situated 1 hour from Heraklion international airport, main ferry port and famous Palace of Knossos. Our area is very quiet in the winter season with no nightlife nor local public transport but livens up from May to October when the local bars and tavernas open to welcome visitors.

Austin was a great help to us during his short stay with us this summer. He successfully prepared and fitted all the pipework for our new bathroom including installing the toilet. As well as being a hard working plumber he also loved looking after our dogs with their daily walks and feeding routines. HIghly recommended!

I stayed here for 2 wonderful weeks. I don't think I have ever eaten so well in my entire life! The vegetarian lunches and hearty suppers were amazing and you never feel lonely with one of their dogs always around to want to be pet. Keith and Deborah are fantastic hosts and the country side was perfect for day hikes. :)

Staying with Keith and Debs was great, I was here for nearly a month and had a really good time. Food is exceptional and company too, I was here with two other workawayers and had a great time overall, the dogs can be a bit of a challenge but it's definitely worth it! Would thoroughly recommend.

I will never forget my two weeks with Debs & Keith. You would have a hard time finding hosts who are more welcoming and patient.
