I adored my month long stay on this farm! Bri and Sue are very passionate about making sure you’re comfortable and have a great cultural experience in Hawaii. They have work-traded themselves so they have a good idea of what you’re probably looking for. I worked with Bri most of the time on the Farm and always looked forward to it. Bri is very
… read more intelligent, fair, and a great communicator. If you’re interested in Permaculture or gardening, she can answer any questions you have. Some of the work is light and some was hard-work but Bri is right there doing it with you.
The accommodations were comfortable. I really liked the outdoor roofed kitchen area separate from the host’s living area. It had a table where I could work on my computer. If you’re looking for a big community to interact with, this is probably not a good fit for you. This is a good place if you like some privacy; the property is big enough that it’s easy to escape and find solitude. Hot outdoor shower and flush toilet are provided. The living space was a big tent structure on a wooden platform about the size of a living room with some furniture, a bed big enough for a couple, and mosquito nets. I thought it was cozy. I should say it is loud at night with the coqui frogs, I usually slept with noise cancelling headphones, but this is the case with pretty much any Big Island property.
In terms of food, they provide enough staples that, in combination with food grown on the farm, I was able to get 3 meals a day but you might want to buy some extra stuff for yourself. The pantry was stocked with lots of oats, rice, pasta, lentils, tortillas, quinoa, beans, and peanut butter. I was able collect a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables from the farm. The avocados were excellent and plentiful; lots of leafy greens, herbs, and various Hawaiian fruits around as well. The outdoor kitchen is nice and a pleasure to use. There is a gas stove top, a small air fryer oven, sharp set of knives, and other tools. There is a small convenient store and Bri constantly offered to take me to a regular grocery store. They also, on occasion, graciously had me over for dinner in Sue’s beautiful home to share their excellent cooking skills with me.
I didn’t have a car for my stay and I would say the area is not very walkable but I still felt like this was a great location. I’m an avid hiker and spent a lot of time hiking down to the Bay for incredible snorkeling (best on the Island). I also camped out there one night. And another weekend I headed north for an incredible backcountry camping experience at Pololu Valley and hitchhiked back (popular part of Hawaiian culture). Then for another weekend, I rented a car for Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea, and other beaches. Whatever you’re interested in, Sue and Bri are super knowledgable and can help you plan your trip when you get here.
Overall Sue, Bri, their kids, and friends are all sweet wholesome people that I’ll remember and have had a lasting positive impact on me.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Sue and Bri both have such caring souls and we felt like family from the beginning. It was so hard leaving this paradise! This experience will never be forgotten.
There is a lot to explore on this island, hitchhiking works very well and we met some cool people through it. Though renting a car definitely makes it easier to explore.
I highly recommend doing work-trade here. I don’t think it gets any better than this!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

WOW! Words can't describe how transformative this stay was. I spent two weeks here with my partner. I have done several workaway stays, but this was my partner's first experience and it was truly exceptional. The accommodations were extremely comfortable and the work was enjoyable, reasonable, and exciting! Each day brought a new adventure. Sue and Bri gave us fantastic recs of things to do around the Big Island, and we loved exploring. For this reason, I highly recommend renting a car if its possible- it gave us the freedom to explore every single day, and the Big Island truly has so much to see.
Overall, I can't express enough how magical this place is- truly the best workaway experience I have ever had. My perspective is expanded, heart is opened, and body is rejuvenated through the fulfillment of this home. Mahalo Sue and Bri for changing our lives in the most perfect way, we can't wait to see you again.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

I stayed at Sue and Bri's property with my friend Sarah for about a month, and it was the best experience of my life. This was our first workaway experience and it's going to be hard to beat. We were able to help build the new structure for the next workawayers to stay in, which was so cool to be able to contribute to the farm. I loved working in

Everyday was a wonderful adventure and we felt so welcome within the family on day one. We made such good connections with the people around the island, which I will never forget. Hitchhiking was our best way to get around the island, we were picked up by so many nice people and ended up making friends because of it. Everyone is all about spreading the Aloha.
I will never forget this experience and I hope others can have such a wonderful stay like we did!

I stayed with Sue and Bri for 3 weeks in May, and I had an excellent time! Cool people, interesting work, and a fascinating environment. My favorite parts were backpacking around beautiful places which were so different from anything I’m used to, and also getting to try such a variety of local fruits.
People: Sue and Bri are both very kind,
… read more knowledgeable and considerate. I did most of my daily garden work with Bri, since Sue was very busy with her skin care business. They are both very experienced caring for the land. I also met Camile (younger daughter), two friendly dogs, and an adorable kitten. They are also about to get chickens, which sounds fun. And another volunteer/family friend joined partway through.
Place: The property is on the West side of the Big Island, up the hill a bit. There are garden beds, permaculture trees, and a relatively unmaintained jungle area. Sue and Dominique have their houses, plus there’s a building with the lab, outdoor kitchen, and Bri’s room. I stayed in a fancy tent, and there’s also a big crafts tent. Building more structures will likely be a future project. An outhouse with a flush toilet, a shower with hot water, electricity, internet, gas stove and toaster oven, cooking equipment. I was there during a particularly rainy period, but my tent stayed dry, and I also hung out in the kitchen (covered). It’s pretty close to two small towns (Kealakekua and Captain Cook).
Work: There’s always plenty to do. Weeding, mulching, planting, mowing, clearing around the fence, harvesting, processing food, applying natural fertilizers, trimming back overgrown areas, moving wood, preparing the chicken coop. Be prepared to get a bit dirty and sweaty. I mostly worked under Bri’s direction. She was great about explaining how things work, why they’re done a certain way, and checking what I was most interested in doing.
Adventure: There’s a great hiking trail down to the ocean which is really close by. Very fun snorkeling. Sometimes dolphins too. I prefer hiking around, so I’m not so aware of what there is to do in town. Sue and Bri usually offered a ride when they drove somewhere. And sometimes there was a spare car I could use. There are some great beaches and historic parks nearby and up the West coast. The bus system isn’t fantastic, but it can work with some planning. I was able to trip over to Volcano national park, Papakolea (green sand beach), up to Waipio valley (beautiful) and Pololu valley. Hitchhiking also helped a lot.

We stayed approximately 3 weeks in Sue's place, sharing dinner with her and her daughters. They were all really welcoming with us. Oooooh how lucky we were to get this workaway-spot on the Big beautiful Island of Hawai'i! Our stay was plain wonderful, from the second Sue picked us up from the airport to the moment we sadly left the island. The property is wonderful - full of fruit trees we hadn't seen before and were yet to learn about, plenty of starfruit and Avocado trees,
… read more Loquat, Lilikoi, Tomatillo, Mango, Papaya and plenty more - so much to learn and eat! Sue and Dominique made us feel at home from the second we got there. We felt very welcome and much at home from the very beginning. Sue and Dominique are the coolest! Both very impressive, strong and interesting women who have equally cool kids. We loved to spend time in their lively families. They are both very giving, so you are more than willing to give back what you possibly can in workforce. Dominique makes the worldbest Bananabread and we got invited to many Barbecues. Our Bungalow tent was decorated with lots of love and aloha and made a cosy home for the two of us - the outdoor kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and we were provided everything we might have needed - beach towels, body boards and plenty of food. Dominique even let us use the farm truck for leisure so we could spend so much time exploring - Mahalo again! Work was physically strenous, as farm and gardening work tends to be. Our project was to help build up a fence for the wild pigs, to protect the plants and trees on the property, so we dug a lot of holes, partly with a jackhammer, helped out with some tree work and wood chipping and cleared the area from nasty cane grass or else to make space for the fence. Stance, who was in charge of the fencing, made every workday so much fun and taught us a lot about the Hawaiian way of life, history and of course fencing. It was superinteresting and we enjoyed it a lot! We still had plenty of time to explore the island on our free days, we went to the beach a lot, enjoyed the incredible snorkeling, ate fresh Macademia Nuts, went hiking and played around with Pumpkin, the sweetest dog you will ever know. We are so thankful for this experience and would love to be back again, time just flew by! This was our 5th workaway and probably the best. Mahalo Sue and Dominique for everything, hopefully we'll meet again soon! A hui hou, mahalo and aloha!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

I spent one week alone and two weeks together with my boyfriend at this workaway place and it was AWESOME! Sue and the kids are great and they tried to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

We did a lot of weeding, weedwacking and woodwork, but got also other little jobs - so it didn't get boring.
Sue is a great cook and the fridge was always full. We were allowed to eat as many fruits from the farm as we wanted, like avocados, starfruits, lemons, bananas,...
The accommodation was really beautiful and we loved the sounds of nature around us! Three days off per week gave us enough time for travelling.
All the people on the farm are so warmhearted and allways are interested in making your time unforgettable, they will take their time to talkabout everything if there is a problem or an issue - therefore these people deserve that you work hard during the working time.
We really enjoyed our experience at this place.
