Who I am and what I do at the moment:

My preferred name is Zulal, Istanbul is my hometown and I currently live in Italy. I work as an engineer, specializing in sustainability and decarbonization. An ideal weekend for me looks like going for a pleasant trekking around the lake across the mountains followed by a light dinner, or participating in latin dance workshops. I like equally spending time indoors; journaling for self-reflection and cooking delicious food are the things I do most to stay grounded. I enjoy listening to podcasts of people from different walks of life and prefer fictional books for reading.
I have an interest in painting but haven't gotten far from being a beginner yet :D

Oh, by the way, I am passionate about language learning as well as teaching. My current obsession is the modern Greek language.

    Behavioral style and personal philosophy:

I value establishing genuine relationships and showing an interest in people with an open mind. In my natural state, I tend to radiate enthusiasm and see the bright side of things, which - I believe - evokes a similar mood in people around me. I'd define myself as high-spirited, curious, and inquisitive. I think there is something to learn from almost anyone we encounter as long as we stay receptive. Also, I believe that each one of us represents a unique package of characteristics, and to be able to thrive and shine it's our quest to find the right 'fits'.

I prioritize one task at a time to keep my focus composed, this may include people, conversations, and events. I feel extremely de-energized when I am asked to spread my attention too thin.

In this period, I am striving towards making mindfulness a regular practice in my life so that I can get better at seizing the moment and maintaining a state of inner peace with myself :) My attitude has significantly changed in the past few months from overanalyzing life to recognizing what has been experienced till now and simply showing gratitude for the bigger picture.

What motivates me most in places and communities:

In my opinion, keeping cool when dealing with external events and demonstrating self-control instead of showing emotionally loaded reactions in the heat of the moment is an invaluable skill. I associate this quality with a developed ability for introspection and self-awareness, which makes a person resilient and wise. Rigidity in thoughts and actions in a person irritates me big time, and honestly, it helps no one. To the best of my belief, this is highly relevant within the context of workaway because these are essential traits in people if the purpose is to function well as a community and to enhance the collaborative spirit needed in a facility to obtain collective results.

I feel my energy is replenished the most, when:

    - I am having a genuine conversation with whom I feel there is a strong connection and mutual understanding,
    - There is a cat curled up on my lap asleep, and I am petting them as I think how spectacular they are and forget about the mundane problems,
    - I am on a slow-paced hike along the coast near the water on a pathway partly sheltered by the greenery,
    - There is a chance to witness an incredible view of the sunset.

I guess all this has been enough to give off a tint of what kind of person I am :D
Never have I participated in a workaway experience, however, whenever I have a chance to organize a trip, my choice is always somewhere rather rural where I can connect with local people and take in what is typical of that specific place. I love wild camping and low-budget traveling. Once I volunteered at a bird labeling station for scientific research.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I like DIY projects, even though most of the time it's not me who gets inspired to develop a DIY project, so someone else initiates it and I happily take part in it!

I can spend the entire day in the kitchen cooking for guests and not even for a second will I complain about it; I love having people to feed and share a laid-back meal with like-minded people.

I am a fan of foreign languages and am fluent in English and Italian at the moment since I use them daily, and I am conversational in Spanish. I had a formal education in German so I was fluent in it before but it regressed significantly, although I can explain and teach the basics and the syntax to whoever is interested :)
