Description
Kia ora! My name is Zac from New Zealand. I've always wanted to visit Europe, but have never been able to find a good time to go, so this year I've decided to quit my job and just do it! I am really excited to see lots of new places and meet new people. I love the outdoors, reading, live music, surfing, volleyball, food, and history.

I'm also a bit of a writer, and like to write short stories and poetry, so I'm hoping to have lots of new experiences which will give me things to write about. I'd like to learn as many practical new skills as I can during my workaway adventure.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
I've spent the last four years working in software and IT - so if you need any help in that department I'm your man. I'm reasonably fit from playing sports and going to the gym. I'm a semi-decent cook. Cats and children seem to like me.

Otherwise, I'm really passionate about learning new skills, and I'm hoping to learn lots during my time workaway-ing.

As mentioned, I'm really passionate about writing and hoping to experience lots of new things which I'll be able to write about. I'm also an amateur surfer, but it's definitely a skill I'm still developing! I love going out to see live music, and meeting new people.

Where do I even start? I have had one of the best experiences of my life staying with Helen and Gabriel on this delightful farm.

The work and lifestyle
The work was a mix of different things, from outdoors farm work (weeding, harvesting, planting) to indoors renovations on some buildings. Work usually started early, 7am when i first joined but… read more we moved back to 6am as summer started to heat up and it became too hot to work later in the day.

We would work from then until around 9 and have a big breakfast - porridge, eggs, sausage, lots and lots of coffee, then get back to work until lunchtime. Another big lunch, we would take turns cooking or eating leftovers from dinner. Then the afternoons would be free unless there was something really pressing to do. Me and the other workawayers would usually either head down to the nearby lake for a swim and some beers, or spend the afternoon reading or napping in a hammock in a nearby field. In the evening we would all collaborate on dinner, then after eating and conversation it was usually late enough to sleep. On the weekends we would either relax around the farm, or Gabriel would drive us to the nearby trainstation so we could go into Grenoble.

The people
I had an incredible time and met some amazing people during my stay here. When I stayed Helen was not yet living on the farm, but she came to visit at least once a week. Gabriel runs the farm really well, and is such an interesting guy. We had many conversations about politics history philosophy etc. over dinner. Helen will make sure you have everything you need - my first week there she asked if i needed something to read, and the next week brought me a copy of Ulysses! She is warm, kind, funny, and straightforward. And an excellent jam and jewellery artisan to boot.

I was also really lucky to meet some other excellent workawayers. This will obviously depend on timing, but there were always at least two other workawayers staying, so there were always people to chat to and hang out with.

Conclusions
I really would like to come back, and found it quite hard to leave! When i first arrived, i was a bit nervous. It was my first workaway experience and the farm was quite isolated. I wondered, can i really spend an entire month here? But within a few days i had warmed to the lifestyle, and the time flew past. When the month was up I wanted to stay longer. If you like a peaceful routine and time away from the cities, meeting interesting people and having great conversations, I would highly highly recommend staying here if you can.
