Hi! I'm Ye Kai, a freelance filmmaker and photographer from Singapore with a passion for storytelling, travel, and meaningful human connections.

I love travelling both solo and with friends. Solo travel has taught me to embrace uncertainty, step outside my comfort zone, and appreciate the beauty of slowing down. Travelling with friends, on the other hand, has shown me how shared experiences can create lifelong memories. No matter how I travel, I believe every journey has something valuable to teach.

To me, travel is the greatest teacher. I enjoy experiencing cultures through everyday moments rather than rushing between tourist attractions. Whether it's sharing a home-cooked meal, learning local traditions, wandering through neighbourhoods, or having conversations with people from different backgrounds, these are the experiences that stay with me long after the trip ends.

As a filmmaker and photographer, I'm naturally drawn to stories. I love documenting the people I meet, the places I explore, and the little moments that often go unnoticed. I believe everyone has a story worth telling, and I'd be honoured to help capture yours while contributing wherever I can.

I'm an easygoing, respectful, and curious person who's always happy to lend a hand. Whether it's helping around the house, assisting with creative projects, working outdoors, or simply sharing a meal and conversation, I'm excited to learn new skills, contribute positively, and immerse myself in local life.

I look forward to meeting wonderful people, exchanging stories, and creating memories together.

I’m a freelance filmmaker and photographer with experience creating documentaries, travel films, brand campaigns, event coverage, and portraits. I enjoy visual storytelling and can help with photography, videography, editing, social media content, and documenting projects or daily life.

Beyond creative work, I’m adaptable and always willing to learn. I’m happy to help with general tasks such as gardening, painting, cleaning, organizing, DIY projects, cooking, and caring for animals. I enjoy working with my hands and don’t mind getting dirty if it means contributing to a meaningful project.

I’m responsible, respectful, and easy to work with. I value clear communication, take pride in doing things well, and enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds. For me, Workaway is about more than exchanging skills—it's about learning from each other, sharing experiences, and becoming part of a local community.

For my first ever Workaway experience, Moriaki-san and Makiko-san were the best hosts I could have asked for. They are two incredibly caring, compassionate, and passionate people who welcomed me into their home and gave me the opportunity to experience life on their farm. I'm truly grateful for the time I spent with them.

The work was physically … read more demanding at times, but incredibly fulfilling. We chopped down bamboo, built bamboo fences, harvested rice and various vegetables, and occasionally took on smaller tasks such as picking fruits and beans and cutting grass. It was a rewarding experience to work with my hands, learn practical skills, and spend my days surrounded by nature. It gave me a newfound appreciation for the amount of effort that goes into producing the food we eat and maintaining a farm.

Moriaki-san was always helpful and patient when guiding us through our tasks. He took the time to explain what needed to be done and made sure we understood how to do things properly. Beyond the farm, I really enjoyed seeing how connected the local community was. Whether it was neighbours helping one another or simply stopping to greet each other, there was a genuine sense of community that I found heartwarming.

With work taking up around three days a week, I also had plenty of time to explore Nagano. Thanks to Moriaki-san and Makiko-san's thoughtful local recommendations, I visited places such as Matsumoto Castle, Zenkoji Temple, Kamikochi, Nunobiki Kannon, Ueda, Togakushi, and Karuizawa, just to name a few. They even shared recommendations for Tokyo, my next destination after the farm stay, which was incredibly helpful!

One of my favourite parts of the experience was sharing home-cooked meals every evening. You could really feel their love for Japanese food and the care that went into preparing each meal. At the same time, they were always open to trying different cuisines, and the other Workawayers would occasionally take turns cooking dinner and sharing dishes from our own cultures. These meals became a lovely opportunity to exchange stories, learn about one another's backgrounds, and have warm, meaningful conversations every night.

Overall, this was so much more than just a farm stay. It was an opportunity to experience a different way of life, learn new skills, connect with a local community, and meet wonderful people from different parts of the world. Moriaki-san and Makiko-san made me feel welcomed and at home throughout my stay, and I couldn't have asked for a better introduction to Workaway.

If you're looking for an authentic experience of Japanese rural life, surrounded by nature, good food, and kind people, I wholeheartedly recommend staying with them. Thank you, Moriaki-san and Makiko-san, for making my first Workaway experience such a memorable one! I hope to be able to see you soon :)

Kai stay about 1 month here.
He is a polite, very kind, and considerate person. He worked hard in the fields, displaying great stamina and energy. He loves nature and often took photos of the sunset and the stars. He was also enthusiastic about sightseeing and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying country life.
