  • Description

Hello! My name is Rosa . I recently graduated from college with a BA in Global & Community Health. I really liked my studies and hope someday to work in the public health. This is my gap year and I have been traveling to learn more about the world and people from different places, languages, and cultures. I love connecting with people I can learn from, and I hope they can learn from me, too, or at least share a laugh.

My high school in Berkeley, California had 4,000+ students, which I believe helped us all with people skills and to become more adaptable to new environments. Growing up, my main hobby was basketball. In high school, I did four years of dance, three of which were Afro-American dance and hip-hop. At university, I learned the Balinese gamelan which I want to continue given the opportunity. Other hobbies are rollerskating and going on hikes with friends and family. I call myself an easygoing person even though I also value "alone-time."

For jobs, I've been a lifeguard since the age of 15, working at the Berkeley pools. I am a certified lifeguard and swim instructor. Other summer jobs were working as counselors at summer camps where I gained a lot of experience working with kids. For the past two summers, I have worked at Berkeley Tuloumne Camp near Yosemite, in California, where we did the whole range of duties, from cooking in the dining hall, running camp activities, and, of course, lifeguarding at the swimming hole on the Tuolumne River. This last summer, I was chief lifeguard and so gained experience coordinating other counselors to keep campers safe.

Finally, my latest job will be as a caretaker for two elderly parents of a family friend during a cruise from San Francisco to New Zealand. I'll be on duty 24/7 to make sure they keep on schedule with medications and stay safe, as one is advanced in Alzheimers. This experience will definitely give me another perspective on the public health field. My duties end at the end of February, after which I take off on a new adventure in Australia and New Zealand.
