  • Description

    Hello!

My name is Roan, I'm 23 years old and I'm from Vancouver, Canada.

My dream is to one day live in the tropics practicing permaculture and agroforestry, and feeding myself and the community in a way that causes as little suffering as possible and cares for the land that cares for us.

I am able to start travelling in October this year. I am open to exploring projects all over the world, but was thinking to start in Hawaii because it is relatively close by, there is no language barrier, I have American citizenship, and I have also heard really nice things about Hawaii from my friends who have travelled there and worked on the land. I prefer longer stays of at least a month.

I have experience living on several off-grid homesteads in BC, as well as doing a bit of gardening and fruit picking around Vancouver. I'm really excited to experience the diversity and abundance of a tropical rainforest ecosystem, as well as the island community and way of life.

    A little more about me:

I avoid smoking and drinking and I follow a pretty strict sleep schedule, as I have found this to work best for my body. Eating close to home is important to me - I'm getting by this summer with hazelnuts from a regenerative farm just across the border in Washington state, milk from a local herdshare program, honey from one of the local islands, and fruit veg and herbs from farmers' markets, community gardens and various fruit trees around the city. This year I have been experimenting with intermittent fasting, as well as some longer, multi-day fasts.

I'm currently working in the kitchen of an organization that provides low-income housing and community outreach services in downtown Vancouver, but in the past have I worked as a delivery driver/furniture mover, a sailing instructor and a bike mechanic. When I'm not working, I enjoy playing music, spending time in community, finding and preparing food, and reading, as well as doing some prehab exercises and strength and flexibility training. When I was younger, I used to do more extreme sports like skiing and kiteboarding, but after several concussions I slowed down a lot and am now taking a more mindful approach to movement practices.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have experience cooking for groups and improvising using all sorts of randomly-acquired ingredients, often from dumpsters. I also make yogurt and can and dehydrate fruits, veggies and herbs to preserve them.

I have some experience gardening in the temperate rainforest and boreal forest biomes - mulching, weeding, seeding, transplanting, harvesting, building beds, as well as some mushroom inoculation. I've also done some foraging and fruit picking, which is my favorite! Whenever I'm walking in the local woods I try to clear out a bit of the invasive ivy, holly and laurel that is perpetually encroaching on the native habitat. It's a good way to get the yayas out.

I have spent a total of 6 months living off-grid; about half of this time we were pooping a hole and bathing in the creek and cooking outside on a woodstove. At the other property there was hot water from the woodstove and electricity from a little hydroelectric project. I have spent time living in community houses in the city, as well as with between 1 and 6 other people on homesteads in the countryside, including a young family with a 1-month old baby.

I am acquainted with strenuous physical labor in a rural setting - trench digging, hauling logs, splitting and stacking wood for the boreal winters. I anticipate the bugs and humidity to be a challenge for me in the tropics, but I also anticipate the fresh fruit to make it worthwhile!

At the homesteads I worked with livestock - chickens, ducks, cows, sheep, pigs - feeding, milking, cleaning, and doing some first aid. I have helped with a basement renovation project; built a 6'x8' shelving unit for sprouting seeds for a CSA program; modified an old trailer to be used as a farrowing pen for a pig; built wooden boxes for root cellar storage; helped to insulate a large workshop for -25℃ degree weather and milled all the wood for a 12'x10' timber-frame blacksmith shop out of logs we cut and hauled out of the woods with the tractor. I have also spent time using chainsaws and various woodshop tools like table saws, planers, joiners and miter saws, as well as using tractors and driving ATVs with trailers on bush trails. I also helping out with some pretty basic machinery repairs (replacing brakes on an ATV; replacing the drive belt on a snowmobile. But if I'm gonna be honest, all those machines were a bit loud for my taste - I appreciate their utility but in the future I would prefer to work more with hand tools.

This is my first time using workaway so I don't have any feedback yet, but here is my WWOOF account from last year - it contains a review from one of the hosts I stayed with: https://wwoof.ca/en/user/822515

If the link doesn't work just let me know and I can send you a screenshot.
