About Petr:

My name is Petr, I’m 31 years old and originally from the Czech Republic.

At the end of 2023, I decided to set off on a journey around the world. I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone, experience life in different countries and simply see where this new chapter would take me.

Since then, I’ve travelled through Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bali, I visited the Philippines, Fiji, Australia and Dubai. But the biggest part of my journey so far has been spending a year in New Zealand, where I worked, travelled and gained countless life experiences and unforgettable memories — and, most importantly, met my partner, Lene.

After New Zealand, our journey continued in Ireland, where we spent almost a year combining Workaway volunteering with paid work. I’ve worked on farms, at a Christmas tree farm, in a holiday resort and in other places where I could get involved in practical, hands-on work. I enjoy learning new skills, working outdoors, helping with maintenance and generally getting stuck into whatever needs to be done.

I’m a practical and adaptable person and I’m not afraid of hard work. I enjoy meeting new people, learning from different cultures and being part of the places I visit rather than simply passing through as a tourist.

Now I’m looking forward to the next chapter of our journey in Canada.

About Lene:



About our Workaway journey in Ireland:

During our time in Ireland, we had the opportunity to experience several different types of work and volunteering across the country.

We spent 5 weeks volunteering on a farm in County Wexford, helping with general maintenance, weeding, painting, concreting, gardening and various other tasks around the property. We then worked for 7 weeks in a paid position on a Christmas tree farm in County Wicklow, where we were involved in harvesting and selling Christmas trees, as well as general maintenance and day-to-day work around the farm.

After Christmas in Czech Republic, we continued our journey in Ireland with 2 weeks of volunteering at an art centre in County Tipperary, mainly helping with general maintenance and painting. We then spent 3 weeks volunteering at a B&B in County Clare, where we helped with housekeeping and keeping the property running smoothly.

Our longest stay was in County Cork, where we worked for over 6 months at a holiday resort in a paid position. Our responsibilities included housekeeping, cleaning, laundry, maintenance, gardening and helping with the general running of the resort. This gave us a lot of practical experience and also taught us how to adapt to different tasks, environments and ways of working.

Overall, our time in Ireland has given us a great mix of Workaway and paid work experience, while allowing us to see different parts of the country, meet many interesting people and experience everyday life in Ireland beyond just being tourists.

What's next?

We are now preparing for our next adventure — Canada. From around the second half of February 2027, we will be looking for paid positions and volunteering opportunities, ideally around Vancouver and the surrounding area.

As always, we are open to different kinds of work and are happy to get our hands dirty. We enjoy practical work, learning new skills, helping wherever needed and becoming part of the place and community we are staying in.

What motivates us most is gaining new experiences, discovering beautiful and interesting places, meeting people from different cultures, exchanging stories, and feeling that sense of connection that travel naturally brings.

Lene- i personally enjoy teaching others and showing others new things. In terms of english it may not be my first language but i am fluent in it. In my years of work there has been many occasions where ive had to teach workers english that were apart of my team and their ethnicity varied from french to malaysian.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

We are both responsible, reliable and adaptable people. We are comfortable working independently as well as part of a team, and we are not afraid of physical work or getting our hands dirty. We enjoy practical tasks, learning new skills and helping wherever we are needed.

Petr:
My experience includes working as a bartender, driver, farm worker, fruit picker and pruner in a kiwi orchard, greenhouse worker growing cucumbers, and worker on a Christmas tree farm.

During our time in Ireland, I gained further experience through both paid work and volunteering. This included general farm maintenance, gardening, painting, concreting and other practical tasks, as well as working at a holiday resort where my responsibilities included housekeeping, cleaning, laundry, gardening and general maintenance.

I also volunteered in a hostel in Sri Lanka, which gave me useful hospitality and guest-facing experience.

In the Czech Republic, I have also been involved in property management, investments, administration and simple accounting. While this is probably less relevant to most Workaway opportunities, it gave me useful experience with administration, organisation, problem-solving and dealing with people.

Lene:
Before starting my travels with Petr, I studied and worked in horticulture for 5 years, starting at the age of 16. For two of those years, I was part of the management team as a Team Leader.

This gave me experience in plant care, pest and disease management, maintenance work, teamwork, leadership and working in a fast-paced environment. I also obtained a Level 5 Certificate in Indoor Crop Production, covering glasshouse growing such as tomatoes and cucumbers.

During our time in Ireland, I also gained experience in housekeeping, cleaning, laundry, gardening and general maintenance while working at a holiday resort.

I have extensive IT skills, particularly with Microsoft applications and HTML coding, and I am always happy to help with anything computer-related. I am quite tech-savvy and willing to learn and try new things, even when I don't know everything from the start.

I also really enjoy planning and organising. I like making things easier for other people, whether that means creating schedules, organising tasks, helping with administration or simply keeping things clean and organised.

Petr:
I love all kinds of sports. I played football competitively from the age of 7 until I left the Czech Republic in 2023. I enjoy working out, running, hiking, skiing and gardening, as well as learning new languages.

I also enjoy watching movies and series, reading books and listening to podcasts, especially about self-improvement and interesting ideas. Through travelling and living abroad, I’ve also become very interested in different cultures, meeting new people and learning how people live in different parts of the world.

Lene:
I love anything to do with plants. I have studied horticulture for many years, starting at the age of 16, and it has also become one of my main hobbies — I have MANY houseplants! 🌱

I also enjoy anything creative, such as painting, drawing and writing, and I am currently studying for a diploma in photography.

I played almost every sport I could at school, but I mainly played netball and competed in athletics, particularly track events. I also enjoy sharing knowledge and helping others learn. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I tutored my younger brother in maths and English.

I’m naturally curious and enjoy learning new things, meeting people from different backgrounds and picking up new skills along the way.
