  • Description

I'm curious about what makes a good community and being part of it. I'm always thinking about travelling and take as much as I can to do it - especially round Europe and took myself on a 10-day interrail from Poland to London last year to explore it with fresh eyes. Leaving a smartphone behind and living in the moment are things I thrive on. I write and manage websites (as a job), can cook (and am happy learn more), and love getting to know new neighbours - making friendships and giving hospitality is a big thing for me. I'm inspired by a faith in Jesus and want to make life better for people who are homeless or trying to fit into a place as migrants - how I'd like to take this forward is to become a migrant and learn life like that, and be part of sharing a home or community that makes others feel at home. Country boy from outside Newry living in Belfast.

Plus de détails sur les langues qui m'intéressent
I was good at languages in school (French and German) and tend to pick up phrases and greetings when I'm travelling abroad, especially after about a week. I learnt Italian to beginners' level for 5 months when getting ready for a trip to Rome and Florence in 2022, and would be up for learning the basics of any language before working abroad (out of respect) and improving while I'm there. I would love the challenge of learning Maltese - well aware how different it is from most European languages - and with a bit of time and training, I think it'd be a fairly confident English teacher as well (with a Northern Irish accent).

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Hospitality - Opening up my house to friends as guests, cooking for them, improving the place with paintwork, working with others to get household improvements done. Being one of the first people to meet and greet others in a social get-together. A good enough cook but always up for being better.

Writing - Journalism with local newspaper (2005-07) and business magazine (2007-15) and since then as assistant press officers and press officer with the Church Officer. I care most about how to make local communities the best that they can be, and turning life around for people who need hope.

Photography - Amateur outside work and covering events inside work (not professional but always aiming for and providing good quality snaps). Thinking outside the box to get a great photo or video, or asking someone who can do it better to do a great job.

Accounts - Trusted with looking after a budget (£15,000) in work and honouring that trust, keeping accurate records, and balancing how to live, save and give so that living benefits others.

Being a good travel agent - Planning and making holidays happen for friends and family and myself, whether a roadtrip or inter-rail adventure, following Skyscanner, choosing good stays, making the most of time there to see the sights and get around. Socialising as a tourist to get to know local people, listen to their stories, and giving back into their lives.

  • Autres infos...

I enjoy walking and hiking (in the Mourne Mountains near where I love), good food and coffee, and taking every journey as a learning expreience. I take time to learn about the history of anywhere I visit, and spontaneously start conversations with bartenders, guides, train passengers and tourists - out of curiosity for them and how they experience life there.

I'm not sporty but like watching tennis. My music tastes are early 2000s rock and pop and smoother sounds - Coldplay, Travis, Ben Howard etc. - and while I can't play, I will listen and and have a great gig from the floor. I play any board game my mates want to play when I catch up. My house is a quiet place most of the time but I love having people round and see everything I have as a gift, which encourages me to live more generously.

Many people round me would see me as a problem-solver; I kinda agree but I'm keen for a break from a job that's sometimes intense, a country where news and history repeats itself a fair bit, and a lifestyle which often means taking in tough news and working out what to do with it. That said, I'm a change-maker - putting together small events for training, building up a great team who I'm honoured to work with and learn from, and preparing stories for print and online (with a slowly growing audio-visual ability) that bring out the best in communities.

I'd like to be a giver who contributes to your community and is happy to make some things better (you'll know best and I'll learn along the way). And I care massively about homelessness, accommodating people forced to leave home, and seeing people given hope and new opportunities.
