  • Description

    Hello there!

I'm Melody, a born-and-raised Hongkonger. Currently working as a freelancer, I believe life is a combination of infinite possibilities; whether they are known or still left hidden, our choices matter - imagine playing a lifelong RPG. Thus, I am experimenting myself to sustain living with various job/hobby natures, a bit more challenging than having a stable career but wayyyy more fun :)

Although being new to Workaway, my travelling journey began a few years ago. Occasionally a solo-traveller, I enjoy the countrysides a lot more than the big cities. It is intriguingly addictive to be up on the mountains, or down under the seas, as adrenaline and peacefulness kicks in simultaneously. Later, I reflected on the trips and wondered if there's anything else doable, apart from solely being a tourist. The power of travelling abroad can be extended beyond vacation; to me, they are opportunities to serve underprivileged communities, understand ongoing issues and live like a local.

(In Hong Kong we speak Cantonese, which can be very confusing with another language, Mandarin. Despite we do share some vocabularies, the pronunciations and writing systems are indeed vastly different!!! For example:
"Hello" in Cantonese: 你 "nay" 好 "ho"; in Mandarin: 你 "ni" 好 "hao"
"Thank you" in Cantonese, there are two ways of expressing gratitude:
    - to thank someone for a gift: 多"door" 謝 "ze"
    - to thank someone for their help or services: 唔 "mm" 該 "goi"
whereas there's only one way in Mandarin 谢 "xie" 谢 "xie"
Isn't it interesting? Try speaking Cantonese if you're visiting someday! ^^)

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

My study major is optometry, the scope of work varies from conducting comprehensive eye examinations to prescribing necessary aids.
Sometimes I also work as a stage crew and handle physically demanding duties.
Experienced overseas volunteer....probably? My past journeys include:
    - Teaching English in Thailand (2019)
    - Holding summer camps in Greenland (2023 & 2024)
    - Constructing an education centre in Cambodia (2024)
    - Conducting vision screening projects in Southeast Asia (2023, 2025)
    - Building infrastructures for an elephant conservation unit in Indonesia (2025)

Frankly I may not have particularly strong skills, but I am a fast learner with loads of curiosity :)
