Description
I am a writer and work in film and media studies! I have a deep love of philosophy and historical preservation more generally. :) Berkeley grad student who loves to read, talk history and folklore over fires, to write, and to create and participate in public knowledge production. Archival work and historical preservation is my passion, as is filming and archiving the present. I am working mainly on tape hi8 cameras at this time and mixed media. Cooking for others is my love langue and sharing meals with new and old friends is also very important to me!

I joined workaway as I am spirited and motivated to train my skills in carpentry, landscaping, growing of plantlife. I would love to study and apprentice to learn how to work with soil, seasonal growing, and building for new environments in a sustainable way! I also love to learn from the rhythms of new places, people, and ecologies. After writing my thesis and teaching virtually this winter, I am hoping to spend more time reading, learning, and communing outdoors.

I am a hard worker, diligent, and steadfast outside. I have experience with landscaping, gardening, and I am a sharp auto-didact who enjoys learning how to work new land and in new climate zones.

I have some experience with furniture assembly, carpentry, and painting and I have a desire to learn more in these fields as well as others that pertain to ecological design, sustainability, and plant life ecologies!

Lastly, I am a great cook, kind, and a smart hand in the kitchen. I enjoy animals and overall, I approach work with a deep curiosity.

While I would like to work specifically in outdoor ecological projects involving the outdoors more generally, I have the desire to continue language study both of local dialects/creole as well as my own language studies in Arabic, Spanish, and French if and when circumstance and timing is concerned. I would also love to learn about local cooking, music, and history and have the desire to explore local libraries and archives.

I am currently shooting a road movie as I drive West from the East Coast and I will be bringing my collection of Hi8 tape cameras and hope to make this exodus a visual story as well!

I love listening to music, picking edible plant life on walks, reading media theory and philosophy, and community organizing and mutual aidwork.

I have a banjo that I am also hoping to learn how to play in a more meaningful way!

Where to start?!! Yvonne is a light-- and such an incredible woman; she is truly a joy to work with, and even getting the pleasure to sit and listen to her story tell is incentive enough to make the journey to Arnaudville. Her property (family owned for nearly a century) is absolutely beautiful, especially at dusk, with restoration inflections… read more from her family's Catholic art, heirlooms, and mid century tiling and upholstery. I stayed in one of the rooms in the main house and had all of my needs met from privacy, strong wifi, access to Yvonnes library of books about local history, and downtime in the mornings and evenings.

Really feels like a museum at its heart, densely inspiring for any history or preservation enthusiast interested in architecture and French Louisiana. Nested along overgrown backcountry roads that line the local bayou, I spent my mornings with Yvonne's very spunky hens-- Anise and Arette, tending to the community garden just across the way, —and learning about permaculture from planting sweet corn, green beans, hot peppers, "the three sisters technique" and learning about the local plant life from the state's native plant folks who share the soil throughout the week.

Le jardin communitaire is one of the many projects spearheaded by Yvonne, a true fixture of her roots and community, and the garden operates as a testament to Yvonne's entrenched investment in living off the land, its rhythms, and with the community she has returned to. Yvonne is a woman who loves to trade with what her land sowes, 'the way they used to do it here' she —often saaid— and she'll often gift fresh eggs from her hens for nearby harvest. Her and her son Armaund really make you feel like a part of their world, cooking and eating together, sourcing produce like native green onions, defrosting preserved satsuma juice and stewing game from the nearby woods, every meal is collaborative and shared together, somehow inherently educational in some way.

Learning the joys of eating seasonally, venturing to nearby Lafayette or honkeytonks, and town fairs for adventures and exposure to the local Creole music of the swamp, and crawfish Thursdays-- it felt as if four weeks was not nearly enough time to take in all that Arnaudville had to offer. I really wish I could write an open letter to how formative my time with Yvonne, Armaund, her friends, and family were for me. Beyond a reverence for Southern Louisiana traditions and cultures, my time instilled in me a strong ethic to (hopefully) return and help in Yvonnes vision of building artist residencies on the property, converting old cyprus wood to make cottages, and to continue to help in her efforts to preserve the history of her land (both its indigenous history, her family's and the wildlife surrounding). Yvonne will inspire you to take investment in community building and historic preservation wherever you go-- but hopefully in return you can help her achieve her short term or long term goals as well! ! To say that Yvonne and Armaund make you feel like community and family really does not do justice to their hospitality. I could keep going but I will stop here! Thank you so much Yvonne and Armaund for sharing with me and I wish you all the best in the coordinating and collaborating for the future projects you have in store! I very much look forward to returning come autumn!
