Description

Hello There, We are Kelin and Makenzie and we are semi newly weds (October 2024) who are looking for a learning opportunity! We are both hard workers, plenty adventurous, and love to travel. We enjoy hiking, playing guitar and singing, reading the bible, time with friends/family and cooking a good meal together. We have a dream of owning property, raising animals/tending to soil and hosting others. We want to learn what its really like to do these things in cultures outside our own (USA). We are currently on a late gap/too early retirement year for the last year of our 20s. We kicked off our year abroad last fall with a few months in the Swiss Alps at a place called L'Abri, and will be heading to Japan and New Zealand next, with some stops along the way.

Kelin has experience in trades work and construction.

Makenzie has experience with caring for and riding Horses as well as working in hospitality.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Kelin has worked as a commercial diver for the past 3 years and before that, for a Tile Roof Repair company for the previous 3 years. Therefore, he can work with most common power tools and hand tools used in various trades. Kelin also has experience with operating forklifts and tractors. To top it off, he has a strong working back that can help with manual labor as well as a interest in carpentry/woodworking.

Makenzie:
- 2 years Coffee Roasting and Production Manager (2023-2025)
- 1 year volunteer for Equine Therapeutic Riding Center (specifically responsible for Horse handling and care and leading horses in lessons) (2025)
- 1 year working for non-profit with at risk youth and aged out foster young adults (2022-2023)
- 8 years Barista, Hospitality, Cafe Management (2016-2024)

They welcomed us into their way of living and made sure we were taken care of; offering us the car on off days and grabbing us weekly groceries. Oh my.. What a two week visit!! This couple just were awesome right from the pick up! Our kids loved them and they just got stuck in and hopefully had a great time. Wow, what an amazing 4 weeks with the family! We searched high and low for a farm host that had what we were hoping for and from day one with the family we felt like we hit the jackpot of workaway farm hosts. They have literally everything! Fruit and vegetable gardens, chickens, cattle, house cow/dairy, horses, goats, pigs, sheep, 5 of the best … read more dogs, a chatty parrot, and more. We admired the ways, the family's love and care for their animals, giving them a good life and then processing for meat in a humane, dignifying manner.

We learned heaps in 4 weeks!

Every night at dinner we felt unworthy to eat the meals (most of the food sourced from the farm) that were being shared with us but it highly motivated us to work harder each day. Best of all was the joy of being welcomed into the family, being offered seats at their table, sharing many good laughs and learning about Kiwi culture. We loved hanging out with the kids and learning from Luke and Liz’s parenting as well as their partnership in their marriage.

We slept really comfortably in the sleep out and we were grateful to have our own space. The WiFi doesn’t work in there but this wasn’t a problem for us. Download shows/movies near the main house and enjoy less time with tech. Probably not the place for you if you’re trying to spend a lot of time on tech/work remote in your free time.

We worked on building projects: repairing dog houses, sheep yards, designing and building a small greenhouse planter box, etc. We also spent a lot of time in the gardens, weeding and pruning. Splitting firewood. Cleaning up outdoor areas. Cooking a meal for the family. Helping out in the mobile kitchen/food truck.

We held down the fort for a week while the family went to Australia which gave us a real taste of the farming lifestyle!

Hawarden is a really rural area but a cool small community. Plan to spend most of your time on the farm unless you have your own car, can borrow a car on days off or get uber. We did some epic day trips and overnight camps thanks to the family letting us use one of their cars. But it’s easy and cheaper to stay on the farm, there’s heaps to enjoy. Time with the kids, playing games, working out in the wool shed, going for a run, grooming horses, etc.

A daily walk with the dogs to visit all the animals on the property and enjoy the surrounding views was a highlight for us along with a couple of horse rides with the girls.

The family took us fossil hunting on the beach and included us in the local Anzac memorial service and traditional Anzac activities.

If you are genuinely interested in lifestyle farming/homesteading, this is absolutely the place for you. Ask questions! Luke, Liz and all the kids know much about the work and life they are living and they are willing to share their knowledge. You won’t be disappointed.

Kelin is a very nice guy. He always has a great sense of humor.
He helped teaching English and building in our project in Puerto Inca. He did a very good job and we are happy that he was part of our project.

Staying with Tracy and the guys was a really unique experience. I learned a ton about off grid living, really enjoyed the local town of Homer, and spent time hiking around their quiet property. I was worked but It felt great to see my accomplishment at the end of the day. If you choose to stay here, make sure you ride the bike along the Spit!

Kevin is a quirky yet brilliant host. He showed me his way of off the grid living and impressive craftsmanship. I was his 2nd workaweyer and he was my first work away experience. I would recommend this property to anyone who is looking for fascinating people with stories, learning about self sufficient living, and good beer.
