  • Description

Hello! I'm Jess, a 27 year old Brit on my first long-term adventure. I plan to be travelling for at least two years and am so excited about all the people I'll meet and the places I'll see! After a decade working in hospitality it's absolutely wonderful to be leaving that behind (for a while at least) in favour of slower living and reconnecting with things I'm actually passionate about. Ideally I want to be working with children and animals in the future, something I am considering going back into education for.
I love the outdoors with a particular interest in survival skills and wild camping, I'm never happier than when I am out in nature. A lifelong passion for animals comes into that too, I've always had pets and have hand-raised a critter or three over the years! Learning about new flora and fauna in a place I've never been is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most. Sustainability and permaculture are things I'm interested to learn more about, I am a big believer in working with the land rather than despite it.
I am currently travelling in a van with my best friend and we mostly come as a pair. This means that while I myself don't have a driving license I do have wheels and am able to get about independently. So far in Australia we have stayed with several workawayers in the Gold Coast area mostly doing home and garden help, pet-sitting, and childcare. I also stayed for three weeks at Farm Animal Rescue in Dayboro doing animal care and farm work which was an absolute dream. I can't wait to find my next experience 🌻

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Generally I'm keen to learn new skills and pursue my hobbies and interests in a way that they're more of a lifestyle. I know I can run a busy bar, or memorise a hundred cocktails, or fry 28 eggs at once in a breakfast cafe but that doesn't mean that's what I want to be doing! I'm able bodied and used to long days so am not afraid of a bit of hard work, it will just be so cool to being doing something different.
On the professional side, my background in hospitality both front and back of house has given me a host of transferrable skills. I have worked in pretty much every role including chef, mixologist, barista, housekeeping and assistant manager/acting general manager, and have picked up a wealth of knowledge along the way. I work very well under pressure and am used to managing small teams and keeping them on task. I have a Food Hygiene certification and good knowledge of health and safety procedures.
I was lucky enough to work as manager/chef in the coffeeshop of the Heritage Centre in the Forest of Dean with access to a working kitchen garden for a year so had more freedom to plan menus with home-grown seasonal produce which I absolutely loved. During my time there I also secured a small grant from the local MP to buy a Jora composter for the kitchen, meaning all food waste went straight back on the veggies in a step towards zero emissions, something I feel passionately about.

Gardening is something I always enjoy learning more about and it has been a hobby nearly all my life - my grandmother is a very keen gardener and has passed that on to me. I grow my own herbs and veggies where I can and would love to have a chance to do more of it.

My mum is a zoologist/retired Vet Nurse and has taught me a lot throughout my life. Over the years we've owned a few dogs with complex medical conditions that have needed to be managed, plus an absolute menagary of wild animals in distress. I'm well-practised at hand-rearing various baby creatures, and have a basic working knowledge of animal first aid. Dog training and behaviour is another area I have some knowledge in, it's incredibly rewarding getting a difficult dog to listen to you. I dogsit for friends and family as much as they'll let me and have helped out friends a few times with BorrowMyDoggy jobs. I've ridden horses on and off and am confident up to a canter but it's been a few years! Since getting to Australia I have worked at FAR in Dayboro, QLD caring for high needs rescued farm animals from the food industry. This included things like administering medications to grumpy old goats, sunscreening pigs ears and shampooing a cow to name a few! I had the time of my life and would love to do something similar again.

Creative writing is a skill I've picked up through a lifetime love of literature, I generally keep a diary and have been known to write poetry from time to time. I genuinely enjoy proofreading and have helped out friends with dissertations and even a novel previously.

I'm quite musical and can play the piano moderately well including reading sheet music. I did also play clarinet and sing once upon a time, something I sadly dropped off of but would love to pick up again. I've given beginner to intermediate piano lessons to friends and family in the past and would be happy to give some lessons!

My time in an amateur theatre company down in St. Ives, Cornwall in my late teens gave me a great base on working with a mixed age group. I loved working with the kids and doing drama games, musical exercises and movement lessons. The creative arts are so important for child development and self expression and this is an interest I've carried into adulthood. Most commonly that manifests now I'm in my later twenties as being the fun "aunt" to my friends children, but it's something I'm considering pursuing in further education. I also have had the chance to work with a Forest School a few times assisting in teaching kids survival/bushcraft skills.

I'm happy to have a go at anything really, as long as it features lots of outdoor time!
