Description
Hi all! I am a first time workawayer and prospective student in environmental anthropology passionate about people, cultures, and ecology. I am motivated by interesting people, interesting tasks, beautiful environments and learning about new cultures and diverse approaches to life. I also happen to be on a journey of mindfulness and self development, and am perfectly okay in solitude.

I'm from the east coast of the United States and grew up in the deciduous forests of the Shenandoah valley. I am at peace outside and getting dirty. I ended up living on an island in California for two years after what was supposed to just be a 3-month seasonal job. The small island is where I truly fell deeply in love with nature and outdoor work, as well as where I discovered the first beginnings of the identity I want to embody.

I like learning, being outdoors, gardening (particularly with endemics), crafting, writing, sustainable living and anti-consumerism, reading, bird watching, bugs, meditation, and drawing. I am trying to learn film photography, Spanish, and yoga.

Very physically active and LOVE the natural environment. I am welcoming of hard, dirty work. I am devoted to learning about my natural surroundings just through my own passion, particularly when it comes to recultivating natural environments with native and endemic species. and I have *extensive* hospitality, guiding and customer service experience. I have some knowledge of construction and mechanical work from my time helping inspect and maintain a zipline and aerial park. Easy to work with, patient.

I spent a week and half at Claudine's wonderful homestead project at the very beginning of July! It was exactly as I expected from her profile. From the very first tour, I was entranced by the delicacy and efficiency with which Claudine has set up the inner workings property, and it was wonderful and intriguing to both learn about + become a cog… read more in the sustainability of it all. I had never used a compost toilet before Claudines, but by the end of the week, we were having discussions lamenting that it isn't implemented everywhere!

The property is absolutely gorgeous. Claudine allows nature free reign of the land in the best way. Every where you look there are fruit trees of bananas, avocado, and guava, both established and new; there are flowers, grasses, and lots of Acacia. The cob architecture is intricate and impressive, and adds the final wild touches, and the yoga deck is the absolute cherry on top. Man, how I miss that yoga deck.

More than once I expressed to Claudine that I couldn't believe all that she had achieved with the property in just 5 years, a sentiment that pays homage to Claudine's indomitable nature. She is passionate and deeply willed. And I so enjoyed sharing lunches with someone who makes a conscious effort to be in touch with nature and spirit. Also the food was great!

I usually started in the mornings around 8:30 and finished around 1:30, with a short break for bananas with peanut butter in between (I probably ate 80,000 bananas during my brief stay, they were unbelievably delicious). My work was mainly weeding, though this was always my choice, and Claudine made it clear I would never be forced to endure a task if I found it unpleasant, and there were a variety of other things I could have done had I chosen. The work was physical, as 5 hours of weeding would be anywhere, but I'm reasonably fit and never had a problem. We didn't have many instances of working together, but by myself I found the work extremely meditative and rewarding. With such weeding it's very easy to look up from your work and see the immense progress made. Claudine is particular in the work she requests, but I made out just fine by listening and communicating. And I absolutely never felt unappreciated.

As for cultural exchange, Claudine has traveled extensively and is a wordly woman, but there is also a steady supply of people staying on the property from all over, speaking all different languages: I encountered English, Spanish, French, Dutch , and German during my stay.
