  • Description

Hello! My name is Mara. I am a joyful, friendly, fun-loving woman. I am traveling the world on my bicycle, Dusty Carnation. I began in Ireland 6 months ago and am currently in the Balkans for the winter. I have met people through couchsurfing, warmshowers, hostels, and workaway opportunities.

I have a deep desire to learn new things and even more so, to help others. My most important characteristics are kindness, love, compassion, perseverance, grit, strong resolve, and open-mindedness. I am a writer, a poet, a fitness coach, licensed social worker, and outdoor sports adventurer.

I am a huge fan of Workaway because it's changed my life. Last summer I joined a wonderful family on the Kenai peninsula of Alaska to help them with their dogs, horses, and farm. I stayed with them for nearly 6 months and they treated me like part of the family. It was a hard decision when I decided to leave just before the winter settled, and I cried as I said goodbye to each of my canine friends. I really felt like I belonged there and being with this family in beautiful and wild Alaska changed me and helped me grow as a person. I have since done other workaways in Ireland, England, and Scotland. I have done everything from taking care of animals, gardening, yard work and maintenance, childcare, homecare, and construction-related tasks. My ideal circumstance is to be a part of a community where there is a mutual exchange and the chance to build relationships.

[NOTE: I had let my membership lapse while I was in Alaska so never got the chance to leave a review for my host family - however they have written a reference letter for me so I am happy to share it, as well as reaching out to my other previous hosts for reference if more is needed. Perhaps this year with my renewed membership I can build my reviews.]

    Thank you for reading!

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I am very physically fit and healthy. I’m a trail runner, I cross train of course and I have some experience with farm work. I have completed several long distance multi-day treks across the world, many solo and along varied terrain, in the remote wilderness, and in varied weather climates. I'm also really into bicycles and have some mechanical skills with them. I have biked around Alaska, Taiwan, Ireland and the UK, through Western Europe and currently in the Balkans.

I'm a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach and a licensed social worker. I am currently working remotely as a fitness coach and my focus is on holistic wellness - integrating physical fitness and performance goals with mental/emotional wellness, as well as incorporating nutritional health. I would be very happy to bring this expertise in to my workaway experiences if that is something that my host(s) would be interested in.

I’m also a writer and poet. I have many leadership skills, I work very well with others as well as on my own. I take initiative and always aim to give everything my all. I am really good with animals and children, and really just building relationships in general.

I do my best to share kindness with everyone I meet. I enjoy making new friends and meeting people from all over, swapping travel stories and having meaningful conversations. One of the cool things about going on adventures with new friends is you put your trust in someone you barely know - and it challenges you and grows you in so many ways. You create bonds and memories that you can come back to when you need a good laugh or a happy reminder that life is colorful and fun and worth living!
We can share stories about the great things we've done and the big adventures we've taken, I always love to hear them and share them! But I also really believe that it is the collection of ‘smaller’ moments that add up to an amazing life. Making a new friend in Copenhagen and taking her daughter to unicycle class, eating dinner every night with the couple I stayed with in Norway, taking that first sip of coffee in the morning, eating a grilled cheese after an ultramarathon, daily texts with my best friends - and the list goes on because as much as I get a kick out of big adventures, the memories I cherish the most are those simpler moments with people I love and care about, or people I am forming friendships with nearby and across the globe. Those are the things that make us who we are as people, how we are in the world. We are all connected, we just have to say ‘hi’ to each other, and be willing to take the time to do anything and nothing. Gratitude is the healing power in life, and I am grateful for everyone I cross paths with, and the big and the small moments that make an amazing life.
