Description

I am a rural sociologist and peasant farmer interested in advancing new peasant farming systems and movements for food sovereignty. I am committed to indigenous land defense. I like working with livestock and general food production, and I dearly love to sing.

I have extensive experience in vegetable production, dairy cows and milking oxen. I have some mechanical and carpentry experience, and experience with equipment operation. I have experience homesteading in Upstate New York and living in the bush in Northern Canada. I have experience living in community and camps in different contexts.

Monica and Martín y Amani were wonderful and my first workaway experience. They took me in like family when I was first getting my feet wet in Chiapas and made it such a supported experience. They go out of their way to help others at their own inconvenience often, they are that kind of community member, but do it with such warmth and love and … read more positivity. They have such a warm and happy home and family, and it was such a great experience getting to be a part of it. They were preparing their house de barro and land as they were moving to France, and needed help with various projects. It was an exciting time, transplanting landscaping, fencing off and laying down tarp for a rain catchment pond, helping tear down and build a larger toolshed, painting a homemade sealant on the exterior wood framing of the house, doing some finishing of the barro inside, helping around the house and keeping little Amani company. They invited me on a Mother's Day trip out of down with other friends to a water park, which was so much fun. And I wish I went with them to the weekend small producers' market in town where they sold crêpes with the best chocolate nut butters. I remember one Friday night Martin was roasting the nuts and we were singing songs with Amani and just talking. And showing Amani, who is just now 3, how to watch movies was fun and a learning experience. Monica is the kindest soul, I could talk to her about anything, and a local friend would come from Teopisca to work as well who was great to work with and always encouraging--he did the wood framing for the house originally. Martin has very passionate about making the world better, and never lets any problem stop him; his effort is endless, as well his patience and respect for other people's skills. I loved staying with the family and felt cared for during a personally difficult time. They even accommodated a personal project I brought along that took more time than I had planned--hand tanning a sheepskin pastured from the mountains here, which I would work on in the evenings. Martin is an incredible cook. I miss the late night chats and pretending to hide with Amani in the loft before his bedtime. I only wish I had infinite time to give them while working there, there were a lot of projects in the scramble to finish everything in the house before leaving, and I was a little obsessed with my sheepskin as well. Ended up coming back to pet sit for ten days while they were in San Luís Potosí, and even had a sleepover and spent a day doing some barro finishing around the windows upstairs before they left. In all it was a pleasure to get to know such an open and caring family. Hope France is still treating you well, the toy libraries, the music festival, and figuring it out on the new land community there.
