Hi! We are Sam (27) and Siebe (29) from Belgium and we are currently on a 1 year trip throughout South East Asia. Discovering new places, trying out new things, doing some self-development and most of all having fun and enjoying our break from the rat race.

I'm Sam, I have a Masters degree in Multilingual Communications (English, French). My greatest skills are copywriting, on page SEO, content marketing & giving presentations. I don't have a lot of experience in physical labor, however I know my way around the chores of a household and am always willing to learn!

I'm Siebe, I have a Bachelors degree in Landscape and Garden architecture, however I did not continue to work in this field. I can be described as a jack of all trades, I'm very handy and I don't shy away from physical or manual labor. I absolutely love gardening!

We stayed with Donald for 1 month. This was our first Workaway experience, and we were really looking forward to it but it didn't turn out to be a good experience. Donald was initially friendly and welcoming but overall we feel the place doesn't match the description which is why we just can't recommend this Workaway.

The accommodation was in a… read more basement room that was very damp, dusty, and had cobwebs (not the room you can see in the pictures). The bathroom was not clean upon arrival and had an unpleasant smell (which stayed throughout our stay). But we didn't let that bother us too much since we were still flying high on that first Workaway excitement, ready to do some work and enjoy our stay. We cleaned up the place to make ourselves at home.

During our stay we were fortunate enough to be able to tag along with Donald to a traditional engagement party. His wife Winnie was also very nice to take us to her church where she did a composting workshop.

The first week our tasks were clear (painting an outdoor wall & floor), however that started to fade during the second week which left us without a clear working schedule or direction. So we started to feel a bit useless. In our experience, Donald isn't the best at communication. He had a lot of loose ideas, but no plan. It wasn't clear what he expected of us. Most of the days we were just doing nothing, waiting for instructions that would not come.

We felt stuck, with almost no work and nothing in the area to explore. The house itself is, in our opinion, poorly constructed. The kitchen roof is full of holes and our bedroom flooded 3 times because of heavy rainfall, causing mold and a bad smell. On top of that, the wooden structure of the house is riddled with termites that leave their droppings everywhere, including on the bed.

Since there was nothing to do, we decided to take a 3-day excursion to Kinabatangan River to see some of Borneo's amazing wildlife (with permission from Donald of course). When we came back things took a turn for the worst.

We got a message from Donald claiming he was unhappy with the cleanliness and hygiene of the place when we left for our excursion. We felt this was unjustified since we tried to keep it clean and he talked about issues we didn't have anything to do with. His attitude towards us changed however which resulted in tension between us. I went to talk to him about it as adults, to clear the air. I listened to his side of the story. But when I wanted to share my side, he became angry and kept saying I was disrespectful for sharing my viewpoint on the matter because he is older than me so I should respect him. I felt that our concerns about the living conditions were dismissed. Respect goes both ways where I come from but I decided to leave it since we didn't want to risk getting thrown out. [redacted]

Overall, we felt disappointed by the experience and would not recommend this host to others. In the end he didn't even thank us for the work we did.

This farm is a dream for every workawayer! Everything was so well organised, the place was amazingly beautiful and the people were soooo lovely ❤
