  • Description

    Hey there : )
I’m Kirsty from Scotland, currently travelling around the South Island of New Zealand in my van. Through Workaway, I’m looking to learn about the Kiwi way of life, immerse myself in the culture and experience lots of new and exciting things!
I have quite a few hobbies and interests. I love being in the mountains and like to go on hikes whenever I can. I also enjoy bouldering and outdoor sport climbing and have done a fair bit of this around NZ so far. I like to explore remote and beautiful places and often take my tent on multi-day adventures. I try to run, swim, cycle or workout when I can for fitness. I’m also an accomplished Highland Dancer, having competed at the highest level for years all across the UK and represented Scotland at festivals abroad.
I’m passionate about travelling and meeting cool new people. Before coming to NZ I travelled around a large part of Central Europe. Since arriving here I’ve spent some time on the West Coast learning to surf, worked at a ski field, picked cherries, hitchhiked, road tripped, ran a half-marathon, competed in a triathlon, visited over 50 backcountry huts, and hiked many beautiful mountains and valleys.
When I’m not outside, I enjoy reading, playing cards and watching movies/documentaries. I’m keen to learn how to embroider and improve my guitar playing.

Plus de détails sur les langues qui m'intéressent
I’m very open minded and would be interested in learning about pretty much any language. I’d definitely would like to improve my Spanish at some point in life. Whilst in New Zealand, it would be cool to learn some Te Reo Maori! In terms of teaching a language, I can offer help with English (written and verbal). I'd also be more than happy to share some Scottish words and phrases!

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I’m flexible and adaptable, with a variety of transferrable skills.
I studied Environmental Geoscience at university and have a broad range of knowledge about the Earth and Earth’s processes. Areas of study include: geology, geochemistry, meteorology, renewable energy, environmental problems and pollution, soil and water processes, ecology, marine biogeochemistry, and global environmental change. I enjoy doing field research and lab work – and for my final dissertation studied the effect of historic mine waste drainage on the wider environment and waterways, in a farming region in Scotland.
I’m passionate about environmental protection and restoration. I’ve previously been involved with conservation work: removing invasive weed species, restoring paths and digging drainage ditches. I enjoy working outdoors, close to nature and am happy to get stuck-in, no matter the weather.
I grew up on a farmstead in the Scottish countryside and have spent many weekends in the forest with my Dad, gathering firewood: splitting, transporting and stacking it. When the weather is dry, I also help around the property, painting fences, cutting grass and caring for a small patch of fruit trees. I’m comfortable being around animals, having grown up with large dogs in the family; and having horses, donkeys, sheep, and cows as neighbours.
