Description

Hi! I am a Scottish girl who absolutely loves animals, especially dogs and horses. I am happiest when I am taking care of them. I also adore travelling and learning new information about different cultures.

I have had one previous Workaway experience learning about horses and working dogs for a few months in Germany in 2019 and I gained a huge amount of fulfilment from that time. I would love the opportunity to do that again, particularly with training/riding horses, preferably for 3 months in one place. (Unfortunately due to Brexit regulations I can only spend 3 months out of every 6 months in the EU so will return to the UK in early June 2024).

I love cooking and I am happy to help with tasks such as cleaning around the house as well. I am good with children and am happy to assist with childcare if that is something that is needed.

I really enjoy being around people who are speaking a different language; at the moment I speak a decent amount of Spanish as well as my native English.

I am a fairly quiet and calm person. I am independent and happy to work on my own if needed, but also happy to work with other people.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I am good with animals- I have a lot of experience working with animals that can be shy or difficult to handle. (I volunteered at an animal sanctuary in Scotland for 4 years with lots of large farm animals- draught horses, donkeys, pigs..). I am calm and careful not to frighten them, in particular horses. I can lead a horse with a head-collar and groom a horse as well as mucking out of course. I can tack up a horse in the English style- I would love to learn how to tack up a Western style saddle as well.
I have had some training in round-pens and lunging young/green horses. In addition to years of riding lessons, I have done a few months of bareback riding, so I have a good seat on a horse.

I have experience training working dogs (I worked in Panama training Belgian Malinois and running dog training classes in 2022) and I understand the importance of assertive body language, calm voice and clear instructions to the dog(s).

I studied a Higher National Diploma in Animal Care at Scotland's Rural College. This involved practical care for lots of different animals as well as animal first aid and nutrition.

I have personally owned and taken care of dogs, cats and small animals in the past.

I am a good communicator and listener- I make sure that I understand fully what task may be asked of me and carry it out to the best of my ability. I may ask a few questions in the beginning but I am a quick learner so will pick up how to do tasks quite quickly.

I am also an artist in my spare time- I love to draw and paint people and animals. I can draw your portrait if you want me to.

One of the reasons I am so interested in doing this kind of work is because I would love to work as a horse trainer one day. I also adore travelling and seeing new places, as well as meeting new people.
I love writing and documenting my travels in a journal.
