I am an enthusiastic student of life in training! Currently I am embarking upon a gap year between my A-level studies (of which were History, English Literature, and Psychology), and an undergraduate degree in Ancient History. I am interested in a Workaway programme to broaden my understanding of culture outside of my own and to help develop my language interests in Italian specifically.

Though I did not study a language in school, I would really like to learn Italian. While I have started to teach myself a small amount on my own, I really feel that being immersed within the language would allow me to pick it up more easily.

I spent just over two months with Ketty and her lovely family in Fano and it was an amazing first Workaway experience! I arrived in January after a long travel day to a warm dinner and comfy bed and the next day over lunch Ketty went over my routine. In the mornings when the girls were there I would help with the preparation of breakfast, warming… read more some milk for Linda and making coffee with the mocha, before walking them to school. Then once back home I would make the girls’ beds and help out with any other smaller chores in the house, mainly hanging or folding some laundry. Then I would have some free time to myself, sometimes I would walk the half-hour into town on a Wednesday to explore the market, or venture further to reach the beach. At one, I would collect Linda from school and we would have lunch together. Then it was homework time and play before picking up Raquel at four to have an afternoon snack. My last responsibility of each day was cleaning down the kitchen and laying the table for the next morning’s breakfast. I was free each weekend to do as I pleased; I explored Urbino, Ancona, Fano’s weekend market, Bologna, and Ketty kindly lent me her bike to cycle to Pesaro and the monastery Monte Giove. As well as solo exploring I was also invited to join Ketty, the girls, and her friends on the weekends including eating out at ‘Pesce azzurro’, seeing Fano’s beautiful carnival, visiting an Asian festival, exploring the medieval stronghold of Gradara, and being treated to lunch by Ketty’s warm parents. While I loved exploring and having free time on the weekends, I also greatly enjoyed getting to know the awesome Raquel and Linda. With Linda I danced to Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson and made fun handshakes. And with Raquel I talked about Harry Potter and The Beetles. With them both I did lots of crafty things, went to the park, and sang ‘The Candy Man’ on a Friday morning when walking to school. Their level of English for their ages is amazing, I only corrected their tenses occasionally and found myself scouting for complex words for them to learn - they certainly taught me many many Italian words! Ketty herself is such a wonderful person, she went out of her way to introduce me to some young people that she knew, cooked me an array of delicious Italian meals which I devoured, and while I personally didn’t practise as much as I aimed taught me some Italian. I really valued our conversations and exchanging our cultures. I learned that flexibility is an important feature in Ketty’s home - there were some days that were different to others regarding my routine, sometimes I would be asked to help prepare dinner or put the girls to bed. In exchange, Ketty herself is extremely flexible, she stressed that if I needed part of Monday or Friday off around the weekend for exploring she would be happy to accommodate a change in her own routine. For example, I returned home for a week in February to go to a family wedding. Lastly, I thought I would mention that I also had the opportunity to meet someone who previously did a Workaway with Ketty who had come to visit, we went out for piadina together and got gelato, all of which I think is testament to what a great host Ketty is and how welcomed you feel when you enter her home. I made some amazing connections during my time in Fano with Ketty and the girls, I have no doubt missed something, but all that is important is to say thank you. Ciao for now! <3
