Description
My name is Ava, I am 24 years old and have a background in Conservation Biology. I grew up in Golden, Colorado, and was always outside hiking and watching animals around me. I find happiness wherever I am. I love being outside, meditating, yoga, hiking, camping and reading as well as being social, meeting new people, seeing new places and trying new things. I learned about Workaway about in 2021 and started solo travelling by that August. I traveled across Europe through Workaway and quickly learned how much I loved it. I loved meeting new people from all over the world and learning about the culture of the areas I visited.

My name is Kate and I am 24 years old. I grew up in Seattle, Washington and earned a bachelors degree at Colorado State University. I have loved to cook and bake since I was a little kid, and have years of experience working in kitchens and bakeries- I would love to help with family meals! I also love to spend time outdoors, hiking, biking, camping, skiing, swimming, you name it and I'd love to do it. I love animals. I find joy in trying new things, meeting new people and learning about different parts of the world/experiences. This will be my first experience doing workaway and I am so excited to learn about different cultures, meet the locals and help on the land!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?
Ava:
I have experience in building, gardening, conservation and hospitality. I have experience building sets for theater performances and have taught others how to use power tools. I have gained most of my gardening skills through Workaway! I worked on a blueberry farm in Ireland, a vegetable farm in Italy, a tree/vegetable farm in Spain and vineyard in France. I have cleaned various trails in Colorado as well, using power tools to clear paths. I have also worked with Macaws in Costa Rica, a monkey conservation group in Vietnam and am currently working at an environmental non-profit in Colorado. My hospitality experience comes mainly from working at a wedding venue. I oversee weddings starting from the ceremony through to the end of the party. Working weddings has taught me how to be very social and positive in a fast paced professional work setting while overseeing servers and guests. I love learning new skills and am quick to pick up new tasks.

Kate:
I have the most experience working in kitchens and bakeries in both a front and back of house capacity. I am confident in the kitchen cooking and baking with and for others and find a lot of joy doing so. Although I have more experience in a back of house capacity, I enjoy working front of house and getting to interact with customers, answer questions and connect with other people! I am confident in customer service. I have experience volunteering at summer camps in the states, in which I have been a group leader for teenage girls organizing and scheduling their activities, as well as spending a month volunteering in one of the camp's dining halls. I am eager to learn about other cultures, meet other like minded individuals, and be taught new skills- I am a fast learner and good listener!

I enjoy ceramics and have been teaching beginners how to throw on the wheel and handbuild. I also enjoy painting and like to learn new ways to make art like welding! I love card and group games and love listening to others play music.

Kate:
I love playing card games and learning new ones! I enjoy photography and video creating/editing.

We stayed here for 5 weeks and could have stayed forever. Mike, Lynley and Mike's brother picked us up and as soon as we met them we were already laughing at felt at home. We quickly became family and had a very hard time saying goodbye.

Mike and Lynley are amazing hosts and lodge owners. We are so impressed by how well Mike and Lynley manage… read more their property while connecting with, and making time for, every single guest and volunteer. This is one of the most beautiful (and clean) lodges we have seen and the surrounding area was breathtaking. Every morning we would wake up and start work around 9:30. Work included cleaning rooms, changing and cleaning bedding, cleaning up the property, and other random tasks. After work we had the rest of the day to explore the surrounding areas. We borrowed bikes, paddleboards and kayaks and hiked many beautiful paths. We even took a day to hike part of the Queen Charlotte Track and Mike was kind enough to water taxi us around. He also took us to see a colony of Gannets which was magical.

The work was very very reasonable and Mike and Lynley were always there to help us with anything we needed. We had a few dinners together and got to know Mike, Lynley and their family (we also love Phil and Deb and did not want to say goodbye to them). We also made such good friends with the other volunteers who were there with us and the postman Adam :)

The lodge is very remote and is a refreshing way to get away from busy life but still meet people from all around the world. The guests we met were very sweet and always chatty. We were able to collect mussels, oysters and cockles and cook them right away for dinner! Mike taught us the best way to harvest oysters and mussels and made the best oyster pancakes we had ever eaten... or the only ones we have ever eaten.

The energy here is so positive and welcoming, we cannot recommend staying here more. Thank you so so much, Mike and Lynley for opening your home up to us and making us feel like family. We will never forget your baked goods and positive energy. You are both such hard workers and have made such a beautiful space for people to come together, relax, and take time to look inwards.

We cannot forget to include Tui and the chickens! Tui was so sweet and would keep us company everyday.

We will %100 come back and cannot wait to see everyone again!
