I’m currently living in the Black Forest, where I enjoy spending time in nature, going for long walks, cooking and eating vegetarian food, as well as exploring creative outlets like writing and art. I’ve also been collecting street art for more than 15 years, I just love stories, perspectives, and the little details that make places unique.

“Don't do anything that isn't play” — not because there aren’t serious things to do, but because I believe life becomes much richer when you approach it with curiosity, creativity, and a sense of ownership.

I’ve been working in education for more than 10 years now, with some particularly interesting experiences at adventure playgrounds and in environmental projects focused on sustainability and recycling.

I really enjoy being around animals and have lived with dogs for many years. I’m also someone who doesn’t mind getting their hands dirty, and I enjoy practical outdoor work where you can actually see what you’ve accomplished at the end of the day.

I’m naturally curious and love learning new things. Once something sparks my interest, I can dive deeply into it and enjoy figuring things out independently. At the same time, I appreciate good company, meaningful conversations, and cozy gatherings — usually more in smaller groups than in big crowds.

Throughout my life, I’ve always felt most comfortable around open-minded and diverse people and places. I’ve lived both in cities and in more rural areas, and what matters most to me is being in an environment that practices openness, respect, equality, and democratic values in everyday life. I’m in a long-term relationship with a woman, so it’s important to me that this is welcomed and not an issue.

Through Workaway, I’d love to experience Ireland (maybe Scotland as well) in a more authentic way, improve my English, meet open-minded people, and contribute to projects outdoors and close to nature.

I’d love to improve my English through everyday conversations and shared experiences. At the same time, I’d be happy to help others with German/Spanish/maybe Dutch if there’s any interest. I enjoy language as a way to connect with people, cultures, and different ways of thinking. I also learned Spanish during an exchange year in Central America when I was 17 and really enjoyed learning through connection and simply figuring things out along the way.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I’ve worked in education for more than 10 years and feel comfortable taking responsibility, organizing activities, and guiding groups. At the same time, I also enjoy being part of a team and supporting projects led by others.

I enjoy practical outdoor work and don’t mind getting my hands dirty. I’m happy helping with gardening, maintenance, creative projects, sustainability-related work, or general daily tasks where an extra pair of hands is needed.

I’m confident with practical tasks and enjoy finding creative solutions to everyday problems. For example, I’ve done small wooden installations and improvements in my own kitchen, can handle practical things like changing a tire, and I’m usually good at improvising when something needs to get done — like filming a how-to video without proper equipment.

I enjoy figuring out how things can be repaired, reused, or made to last longer instead of simply replacing them. Whether it’s with a sewing machine, some glue, or unusual materials from a hardware store — I will find out how to get it done.

On a personal level, I’d describe myself as curious, adaptable and reliable. I like learning by doing, figuring things out independently, and contributing in a calm and thoughtful way.

Patrick's house, with its stunning view of Galtymore, is a truly unique place to stay. The surrounding fields and trees are magic. Patrick clearly enjoys hosting Workawayers and often shares stories about the many positive experiences he has had with previous volunteers.

The workload was manageable, and I never felt that too much was expected. … read more The village is about a 1 km walk away and has a small supermarket and a pub. Patrick was also kind enough to drive us to the train station in Tipperary at the weekend, which made it much easier to explore other parts of Ireland during our free time. During my stay, there were two other Workawayers, which created a lively and social atmosphere. Jesus from Spain who lives also there and works during the day, was pleasant company. There were also many animals on the property (chickens, ducks, goats, two dogs, and a pig).

The food was always plentiful and of very good quality. Patrick made sure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere in the evenings was often very social, with beer being enjoyed regularly and wine on some occasions. These drinks were generally provided by Patrick which was a generous gesture. If you are comfortable with a house where alcohol is part of the social environment, you will likely feel at home. If you prefer a quieter or alcohol-free setting, it is simply something to be aware of.

I was fortunate to have my own room with a small private bathroom, with the option to share, since there were more beds to use. We were free to do our laundry and cook whenever we wanted.
As this is a rural house, regular cleaning is simply part of everyday life. Dirt is easily brought in from outside, and with several people sharing the large kitchen and living area, keeping the common spaces clean is important. Most of our work involved maintaining the vegetable garden, pulling weeds, repotting plants, and cleaning the house on rainy days. During my stay, there were no larger upcycling projects.

As someone who cares deeply about sustainability, I had expected a different approach to handling materials. While working in the garden, I personally noticed quite a bit of plastic in the soil and would have preferred a stronger focus on removing it as part of the gardening work.

One of the highlights of my stay was listening to Patrick talk about Ireland, its history, and its languages. I learned a lot, and some of our conversations were genuinely interesting and thought-provoking. Patrick was also open about sharing stories from his own life with us, which gave us an interesting insight into life in rural Ireland. During my stay, we also had the opportunity to meet some of his friends and neighbours. We were equally encouraged to share our own life experiences and perspectives. I appreciated these conversations, as they often led to thoughtful reflection and new ideas.

However, my overall experience was mixed because of our communication style. Patrick has a sense of humour that did not suit me personally. I appreciate conversations based on mutual respect and sensitivity. During my stay, I often experienced frequent sexual jokes or innuendos. While others may perceive this differently, I personally found that they sometimes went beyond what I felt comfortable with, especially when there seemed to be little awareness of whether others were at ease with this style of „humour”. As I had already shared these thoughts with Patrick in person, I also felt it was important to reflect them here. I value open and honest communication and see feedback as an opportunity for mutual learning and growth.

I therefore left with mixed feelings. I genuinely believe that being more attentive to different personal boundaries—particularly those of female guests—could make the experience even more welcoming and allow the generous hospitality Patrick offers to remain the main impression of a stay.
