Hello! I am Juliet, known to my friends as Nana JuJu. Walking and going to the beach are two of my favorite past-times. I am an avid gardener, an animal lover, a culinary educator, writer & artist. I share my home with my husband, our 22 and 26 year old sons, 4 cats and 3 dogs. My friends and former employers would describe me as dependable, funny, flexible, calm, affectionate, resourceful and helpful. I speak English, Spanish and Guarani and am learning Italian. While I am older in age (61)I’m definitely young in spirit and strong in body! I love caring for babies and little kids, working hard and seeing the results of my labor. At one time, our blended family had 7 children, ages 10 months to 20 years old. I’ve raised a bunch of teenagers and have worked as a nanny, birth and postpartum doula and as a breastfeeding peer counselor. Therefore, pretty much nothing phases me! I am a hard worker, a non-smoker and very clean and tidy. Gardening gives me so much joy. I have half an acre and honeybees which we care for without herbicides and pesticides. I can use many hand tools as well as a chainsaw. I'm a great cook and enjoy having people share a meal with me. I was in the Peace Corps in Paraguay which is where I met my husband. Therefore, I have experience living in someone else's home, and adjusting to their lifestyle. I've been a nanny for the last four years, and love babies and toddlers.

I just finished three weeks with Anna, Pablo and little Thea. It was truly a great first WorkAway experience! Anna and I messaged a few times after our initial contact, and I felt welcomed by her family. It took a few days to find our rhythm, and we had great communication about her expectations and need to change our schedule to fit her needs … read more best. Having raised my own children, I recognized that she and Pablo were operating with a sleep deficit from attending to Thea during the night. Therefore, I strove to be as helpful as possible, taking the initiative on tasks that needed doing such as hanging laundry, extra housecleaning and taking Thea off for a walk a few days early mornings earlier than usual so that they could get a few hours more of rest. Anna and Pablo were very generous in taking me to AMAZINGLY beautiful places in the area of Majella National Park and introducing me to their interesting and kind group of friends. The meals and restaurant experiences they provided were superb. We ate lots of fresh beautiful produce from Pablo's farm and delicious local sheep's milk cheese. Anna and I spent many hours talking about Italian history and politics, the challenges and joys of partnership and motherhood, and food, glorious food! She helped me improve my Italian language skills and was always ready to explain cultural concepts to me. Her home is lovely and comfortable, with gorgeous views and is just a short walk to a trailhead into Majella National Park. Thea was fun and funny, and I enjoyed being her "American Nana" for this short time. While the little town of Roccamorice doesn't have a "regular" nightlife, there were lots of festivals to attend and we had a few late nights at the local restaurant Ai Quattro Sentieri. Be ready to lend a hand if you go out to a restaurant with them; Thea learned to walk while I was there, so she'll need vigilant tending while her parents take a much needed break and socialize with their friends. I've spent five months in total in Italy the past two years and this area Abruzzo is, by far, my favorite. If you love history and hiking, this is a splendid spot. I can definitely recommend this WorkAway assignment especially if you are kind, have a sense of humor, have patience, take initiative and are flexible. I'll be back again to see all my friends in lovely Roccamorice. Grazie famiglia, per tuttui!
