Travelling from The Netherlands to Singapore by bicycle. Currently in Georgia.
Description
Hi, my name is Joppe (23 years old) and I’m from The Netherlands. Though I can be a little bit shy at first, I open up quite fast and love to participate, help out with anything and have interesting conversations.
Since my early years I’ve been interested in history and it’s something that I’m really passionate about. So it’s no surprise that I studied history at university. My passion for history sparked my interest in other countries and cultures and I really enjoy learning about the different habits in other parts of the world and how they originated. I’m quite the adventurous person and I have tried to implement that in my life. I traveled all over, alone and with family and friends. I also participated in a volunteering program to Costa Roca where I had some of the best and worthwhile months of my life. The program consisted of three phases: a community phase; a nature phase; and a self development phase. The first phase consisted of us (under the leadership of a member of the community) building a school canteen for a indigenous community. In the second phase we helped out rangers in a National Park. And lastly we developed our leadership skills and self-reliance during a 250 km trek trough Costa Rica. That same year, my gap year after high school, I lived in Madrid to learn Spanish.
Now that I have completed my bachelors degree at university, I decided to take another gap year (not really a time limit). On the 25th of July I left The Hague (hometown, born and raised) to start my bike journey to Singapore. Although I want to reach that destination in the end, everything in between is open to change. I started this journey, because I want to figure out what masters degree I want to do eventually, to see if a more ‘nomadic’/flexible lifestyle is something i would want and of course to have a great time. I strongly believe that having a period of self reflection and rest (however long that may take) before making a life altering decision (in my case masters degree and ‘way of life’) is really important. I also want to see more of the world and learn more about the world and its different peoples before I go studying again.
I signed up for Workaway to have different types of experiences during my journey. Instead of ‘just’ traveling, I also want to learn new skills and learn about different kinds of labour/work and alternative lifestyles. I’m open to pretty much any type of work (within reasonable limits), physical or otherwise. I have some construction experience from my time in Costa Rica and I have worked as a support teacher at high schools and I’ve worked for a company specialised in helping (highschool)
students who struggled with schoolwork.
UPDATE: I spend three weeks working at a Workaway in Istanbul. I teached conversational English to students of all ages.
Furthermore I am a reasonable cook and love to do it (i have experience with cooking for large groups of people).
I have volunteered before. Apart from my time in Costa Rica, I’ve volunteered at a food bank and at the local library where I helped students with their homework for free.
Another reason why I signed up for Workaway is that I would like to meet other young people with similar approaches to life and who are travelling.
Some of my hobbies are travelling, reading, jogging, cooking and meeting up with friends to party. I also really like to be in nature and go on hikes etc.
Btw: Although I’m currently travelling alone, I’m open to travelling with other people.

I have some construction experience from my time in Costa Rica where I volunteered. I don’t mind physical labour at all as I see it as very fulfilling.
I’m an experienced support-teacher, because I worked for a company that helped high-school students who struggled with their schoolwork and supplied substitute-teachers to high-schools.
I really like cooking and grew up helping my mom in the kitchen. I’m reasonably good at it. I lived with 17 students, so I have experience cooking for large groups. Always open to learn new cooking skills.
I speak Dutch and English fluently and can get by in Spanish (basic conversation). I can also understand some basic French and German.Âge
