Description

I am 25 and have been traveling around Asia for the last couple of months. My last big trip before that was in Latin America. I love being outside and helping out with gardening, farming and the like. I'm a rock climber and hiker. I enjoy working with kids and have experience babysitting and teaching! Mostly, I love being in community and I don't need a lot to feel comfortable. I enjoy using Workaway as I feel like it’s an opportunity to give back to the communities in which I’m visiting.

I have worked on farms and in hospitality and enjoy both greatly! I have worked on farms doing weeding, planting, and sowing. I have worked with livestock (horses, cows, chickens, etc.) I have experience cleaning hostels, working reception and even painting murals! My greatest strength is that I'm willing to do (almost) anything to help out!

I have practiced yoga and mediation on and off throughout my life. I am happy with very rudimentary conditions and I prefer to not have access to the internet so I can unplug and be present with my surroundings. I'm down for anything and a team player!

I had a wonderful time with Luluk and Aji and everyone else I met in my time here! It was truly the highlight of my months long trip and if I could have stayed for longer, I definitely would have. Luluk and Aji were very accommodating of my preferences - I arrived after a lot of busy traveling and they put no pressure on me to be more social or … read more active than I wanted to which I really appreciated. I was the only volunteer during my time there and so I had my own room which stayed very cool. The house is plenty big with a large kitchen and you can bring a mat up to the roof to hang out there if you want! Luluk cooks delicious food (including the best donuts I’ve ever had) and we also went out to eat a fair amount when things were busy or I wanted to try a local dish. There’s a traditional market nearby so if you want snacks or fruit, you can get those yourself.

The actual volunteering involves assisting the two teachers (who are both absolutely lovely) with teaching students, mostly ages 7-16. The students come for their tutoring in small groups and are all very respectful. The teaching style is structured around flash cards so you will be doing that with students a lot of the time and then playing games at the end too! Given that the students are mostly English beginners, a lot of the instruction occurs in Bahasa/Javanese so if you don’t speak it like me, there is some time just hanging out during lessons. With older students, you can make a little more control and design your own lessons utilizing the flashcards which was my favorite part! A little more information on schedule: classes run from 11 at the earliest to 5:30 at the latest from Monday to Saturday. The schedule felt perfect for me! Luluk is also very clear about the schedule with helped me understand where I needed to be when. Sometimes with Workaways it’s unclear how social or much of work you should be doing but I never felt that at Luluk and Aji’s. I was free to just be me.

Luluk and Aji helped me meet some other people my age and they showed me around the area and drove me wherever I needed to go. It was wonderful to be able to explore the surroundings with locals! I went hiking, to the local swimming pool with the babies, to the nearby ancient ruins, a yoga class, etc. It was truly so fun!

I had such a great time and I would recommend anyone who has the skills and time to come here. I miss it so much already! ❤️
