Description

Hi, I’m Cathy !
I love meeting new people and learning from them. I love hearing stories and experience different cultures. I’m fascinated by how people can be so different yet so similar.
Mandarin is my first language but I can speak quite fluent English thanks to the bilingual environment I grew up in.

A few things about myself so that you can quickly get to know me:

*I’m a computer science student so I know a thing or two about computers and video editing if you need help!
*My childhood dream is to become an artist (which, sadly, failed to come true) but I didn’t give up on that dream so I’m still drawing and making small handicrafts. I would love to learn about anything about arts and clothes and carpentry even maintenance stuff as those all count as part of arts in my eyes.
*I love animals, although I don’t have one with me currently but I have experience taking care of my friends’ pets. Also, I have learned horseback riding as a teenager so I’m quite familiar with horses too.
*I do a lot of sports. I grow up playing badminton and volleyball but my passion now is ROCKCLIMBING and hiking. I also got to the gym regularly. This guarantees that I have a strong body and am willing to get my hands dirty, plus, I am willing to do physical works as I often find them relaxing.

things I’m improving:
*I don’t have much work experience yet but I’m trying to gain some, starting from workaway.
*I can’t cook but I’m learning. On the good side, I can eat basically anything (though I don’t like seafood that much) so I’m grateful for every meal others made for me. I am, however, very willing to prepare ingredients and do the dishes.

I love watching movies, play sports, reading and talking with people. I also like good music so please share with me your favorite songs and pieces. I may be very talkative and ask a lot of questions when talking about things I’m interested in so be prepared.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

- I love making arts. I like drawing and make projects. I love creating ideas and make them come true so I often self learn many skills in the process in order to make that come true.
-I cherish every moment so I want to record them. I will be taking a lot of photos to capture daily events and I can share it with you.
-I’m really passionate about rockclimbing these days and would love to meet more companions.

I want to learn carpentry, chopping wood, fixing bikes(&cars) as well as fixing places in the house because I view all of these as part of arts too. Sadly I can’t acquire those kind of knowledge in my daily life so I’m shouting out to anyone who can teach me these.

I have stayed at Daniel’s place for three weeks and it is amazing. Although there have been some changes in plans, Daniel was always very flexible and welcoming.
Most of my work involved weeding in the back yard, cleaning up at the zocalo and washing the windows. The workload was light and flexible.

It was a pleasure to host Cathy for a few weeks. She's smart, funny, flexible, and a hard worker. She also bonded with my 18 yr old son, and the two of them were thick as thieves, talking about anything and everything, discussing math problems, watching amine. We're both going to miss her great energy.

To be able to stay here for 2 weeks is a childhood dream come true for me. I’d always wanted to work on a farm and it’s the perfect place to start.

Tom, Peter and Nancy’s farm has the cutest animals. Every day I wake up at 6:30, walk down the stairs, get a bottle of tap water, and begin my day in the barn. Almer the barn cat is the neediest cat … read more I’ve ever seen, always following me and lies down in front of me to try and get me to pat him. The chickens and I are both afraid of each other at first, but after a few days they begin to chase me when I feed them, and I learned how to catch a chicken by hand. It’s a bit tricky to get the sheep and goats out, but once you become friends with them, it becomes a pleasure. I’m also very lucky to have witnessed Luna giving birth to her babies, the mother-son bonding process is simply the sweetest thing in the world. Of course, Jedi and Jesper, the two dogs, are so very lovely and smart as well. I believe Jedi and Tom are basically the same spirit in two forms.

This place is also the most Chinese household I’ve been to. I’m really surprised when I arrived to see the Chinese green tea in the cupboard and find chopsticks in the drawer a few days later, which truly shows Tom and Peter’s acceptance and wide knowledge of many cultures. Tom’s cooking skills and horizon always amazes me. I had tasted the best waffles and hamburgers and heard some truly amazing adventure stories here. It’s a shame I didn’t get a chance to taste his Chinese and Thai cuisines. Peter is the geography and economics expert, don’t ever hesitate to ask him about these things.

Tom, Peter and Nancy are all very patient and kind. They listen to every word you say and are always willing to help. I don’t have much experience in the chores, which means I have loads of questions to ask at the start of every task. But I was never afraid because they would be there for me and explain how to use the tools. I’ve tried cutting wood, weeding, cleaning windows and so much more while enjoying all of them. I actually find it fun to do most of the tasks, top 1 being weeding with a Gundam-like machine, very relieving. No need to worry about the workload since the workawayer’s body condition is the first on their list. They made sure I’m not overdoing it and had enough resting time. After finishing the chores, the rest of the day is basically free and I can do whatever I want. The swing quickly becomes one of my favorite spots.

The guest room is actually quite big and the bed is comfortable. It feels nice to finish a day of working and lay on the bed. Just across the bedroom is my own bathroom. These are all on one end of the corridor while Tom and Peter’s is on the other end and Nancy is downstairs, guaranteeing my privacy.

I had to admit the WiFi is not the best in here, but that actually prompts me to do a lot of things other than checking the phone. Peter and Tom are huge sci-fi and horror fans, making their bookshelf full of star wars and Isaac Asimov and TV room loaded with classic dvds. I finished a Canadian sci-fi book and finally got to see Bladerunner and Alien. The nights I spent in that tv room are unforgettable. Also, the campfire with marshmallows and popcorn while looking up to see a sky full of stars or turning my head to see fireflies around the leaves was dreamlike.

Tom and Peter are a really loving couple and, as part of the LGBTQ community myself, make me feel so happy and welcomed. Tom introduced me to his LGBTQ positive neighbors, who are lovely people that I’d like to meet again. Peter is so warmhearted, constantly pointing out the pride flags around and telling me about the inclusiveness of even the smallest town in Canada. On my day off to Kingston, he told me about a drag show there, which I didn’t hesitate to buy the tickets. That drag show was mind blowing and it’s all thanks to Peter’s information.

I would miss all our conversations, lovely meals and honestly just the whole place. Too bad I haven’t learned any Chinese dishes, if I ever visit again I’ll be sure to bring back some Chinese cooking skills as well. This farm is 10/10 and the perfect place to begin a first workaway. I recommend this place for every workawayer. Thank you for everything.
