Hi, I am Axel, a french 20 year old student and I am looking for my first Workaway experience ! I am very curious and open-minded, I enjoy discovering new cultures and learning about others :)
Description

I am a french 20 year old student motivated by traveling, discovering new cultures and helping people all around the world ! I like sports so much (especially surfing and volleyball) and I am also open minded to a variety of activities (art, music, cinema, cooking...). I adapt very well to all kinds of situations and I do not need a lot of comfort while traveling. I like going on small adventures around my place but also bigger trips in Europe.

My goal as a traveler is to have as low impact as possible on the planet. For this, I decided to become vegetarian and to stop using planes.

I have one month free this summer and I want to spend it working as a volunteer while discovering another country close to the ocean such as Portugal or Spain. My goal is to work hard and surf everyday, spending time discovering new people and enjoying life as much as I can.

I can't wait to start my first workaway stay with you !

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Here are some skills I have, but I am also always motivated to learn new skills new and I can adapt rapidly to your needs :

Cooking : I spent the three last summers working in different restaurants as a kitchen helper and sous-chef. I know how to cook a variety of seafood, burgers, pizzas, pastas and more.

Bartending and waiting : Working in a small restaurant last year, I also learned how to make drinks and deliver them to our clients.

Content creating : I am currently on an internship in France creating content for a small company that tries to create guides to eco-friendly travel. I know how to use Canva and I am at ease with community management of LinkedIn and Instagram.

Article writing : In my current internship, I am also writing articles for this eco-friendly blog and I have skills in SEO.

Gardening : I like to take care of plants with my parents, help them make their garden look nice and grow some vegetables and fruits. I am deeply involved in taking care of the environment and I like getting things done even if I am dirty !

Teaching : I am a volunteer snowboard and volleyball teacher at my university in the Alps mountains in France. I am used to speak in front of a wide range of people. I can help to teach surf because it is a sport I practice since 2019.

Cleaning : I used to clean bungalows in a camping near where i lived as my first job.

Painting : I renovated two houses with my parents, removing the old wallpaper and painting every wall in white or blue.

I also have 3 little siblings and I am used to babysit them, as I practically raised them with both of my parents.

I have a level C1/C2 in english and I know how to speak spanish as a B2 level. French is my mother tongue.

It was my first workaway and I found it overall very nice! However, there are some details that need to be shared so you are fully aware of what awaits you with this experience. If I needed to sum up, I would say that you need to be at ease with insects and having little privacy but you have so much free time it's very convenient.

Pros :
- Kristof and Catarina are lovely, and their children too; they are very open and warm.
- You only work 2 hours a day, and you'll have plenty of time to visit the surroundings.
- There is an electric bike with a surf rack that you can use to go to the beach and a foldable bike for another person to join you. This is very practical!
- They are also very flexible. I left 2 days early to visit another city in Portugal and they were very chill about it!
- You live in a separated house from them, so you can have your own time alone.
- You will not be alone in the house (especially in summer) so you can meet new people and discover the region together
- The workawayers i met were all very kind and friendly, it truly made this experience unforgettable!
- You can see the ocean form the terrasse, it's very enjoyable.

Cons :
- The house is not what the pictures show anymore. Paint has been removed in some places of the walls, and they are also dirty. The doors of the sleeping room don't close, the window blind of my room was stuck and I shared my room during the 2 weeks of my stay.
- There are ants absolutely everywhere in the house, if you drop a piece of food without seeing it, it will be attacked in under a minute. And for example you need to keep the trash outside just because of the ants.
- There was also a mouse inside the house but we could not catch it.
- The fridge is very small and it was annoying to keep things inside
- There is nothing to heat the place so don't come in the cold months if you don't like living as if you were outside
- There is plenty of stuff in the house that belong to Kristof and Catarina and are just there so it adds up to the mess of it
- Only 2 beds out of 5 have mosquito nets, if you can, come with yours.

Concerning my shifts, for 2 weeks I was only watching their oldest child (3 years old) and I didn't do any projects but it also depends on the people.

Overall it was really nice but you should not be concerned with comfort or with animals to live there!
