Hiking, meeting new people and learning new skills!

Hi! I'm Annika, a 25 year old from Australia looking to travel, meet new people, contribute to meaningful projects and generally get out of my comfort zone!

My experience is mainly related to Australian native plants as I worked as a volunteer and later team leader at my local botanic garden for several years. I began working there as work experience for my landscape architecture degree and then continued on afterwards because I loved the sense of community (of all ages), being outside and constantly learning new things about our incredible flora, fauna and fungi. Our team did all sorts of work; basic surveying, plant ID, weeding, raking, mulching, planting - so I don't mind getting my hands dirty!

I've also worked in a design office setting using the above skills - my favourite part of this was graphic design for our client presentations as well as researching and creating tailored planting palettes based around colour, texture, form and the unique site constraints. This really appeals to my artistic side as I love creative projects of all sorts - sewing, cooking, drawing, photography, writing and many more. I would love to use these skills to help others.

As well as this, I have worked in a retail setting and really enjoy chatting and helping people one on one.

In these roles I was trusted to work independently and at other times manage a team, so I am equally comfortable working alone or in a group.

Outside of this I love taking my dog for long walks, hiking in local national parks, cycling, kayaking, dancing, reading, writing, and planning and making decor/props for birthday parties!

I have a French-Canadian background; I'm a fairly fluent speaker and able to read French but struggle a bit with writing (mostly conjugation and accents). I am happy to practice conversation with people who are still learning or to learn from others who have a better grasp of writing than I do!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I've done a range of gardening and landscape work from general maintenance to more scientific plant identification and report-reading/writing. I'm a detail-oriented person and find great satisfaction in focused tasks like this.

I enjoy working with animals - whether caring for my dog or helping injured wildlife I have found on walks (though I must say a Kookaburra without feathers looks very strange!)

I love cooking, baking and trying new recipes, especially with seasonal produce as we have a big veggie garden at home. All my favourite recipes have been approved by the non-vegetarians in the household too!

I enjoy designing and have made digital and hand-drawn graphics for a variety of personal and work projects (illustrations, layouts for print publications, online presentations and more) as well as dabbling in web design and ecommerce.

I love planning and hosting events - decor, menus, costumes, designing and making props!

Work and volunteering has exposed me to a broad range of people of many different ages, experiences and abilities which has made me more adaptable and a better listener.

Most of all I am curious about the world around me and keen to learn new skills while helping others.
