  • Description

Hi visitor, I’m Andre and I’m from Hanover, Germany :)

What motivates me and makes me happy: I actually enjoy a lot of different things and am always curious about new experiences, perspectives, and topics I don’t know much - or anything - about yet. So that’s an important reason, but not the only one, why I signed up for Workaway.

Music has been a major part of my life since early childhood. Singing in a boys choir, playing the piano - solo or in an ensemble (or sometimes the harpsichord, or rarely the organ)… I actually studied in this field, piano and musicology, and worked at festivals as well as for a music publisher. And I also taught music at schools part-time during my studies. So music definitely makes me happy, and usually other people too, which is probably the best outcome overall, isn' it?

In the two years leading up to my high school graduation, I took an advanced course in geography, and I still remember my term paper on “Desertification in the Sahel region, as exemplified by Burkina Faso” very clearly. My teacher didn’t believe me when I mentioned the occurence of “mango rain” in Burkina Faso during the rainy season, and, to be honest, I found that term on Google back then :D Maybe Workaway can help me figure out whether there really is mangrove rain in Burkina Faso or not, someday? ;) In any case, I was also interested in topics like urbanization and sustainable urban planning back then - my home town hosted the EXPO world’s fair, and there were many such projects afterward, and my father and his siblings worked for decades as house architects and urban planners, so perhaps that interest rubbed off on me. (In addition, I worked as a janitor helping hand for two years while I was in school, renting out rooms and doing minor repairs; perhaps my father’s interest with regard to houses was passed on to me twice over during that time.)

As a child, I had two cats - one blue and one beige - and a dog, an Alaskan Malamute. And even though I haven’t had any pets of my own for quite some time now (most recently I had two budgies, who sadly didn’t live long, and an aquarium), I still love animals. The hand in the second photo above is mine, and the giant tortoise, who lives with his buddies in the spice garden on Mahé, seemed to enjoy being petted. So, nature and travel are also things that bring me joy; so far, I’ve been to India, Mahé, Moscow, and several European countries. While I do have a bucket list, I also simply enjoy immersing myself in other, new perspectives. I love spending time in nature anyway - in the forest or by a lake - and I only recently learned that there’s a word in Japanese for something magical that has no equivalent in German (or probably English either): komorebi - sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees.

Part of my studies was history (primarily music-related, of course), and I’ve always loved history anyway. But with very few exceptions, when you read (academic) history in books, it seems that it always tells the story of empires and the powerful, and very, very rarely - almost never - the lives of ordinary people. Isn’t it especially in these times, when so much is changing so quickly in the world, much more appealing to experience history in a down-to-earth way and from a wide variety of perspectives? Workaway is definitely a great - maybe even adventurous - way to do that :)

So, I’ve already told you a bit about some of my interests. There are plenty more - for example, I really enjoy astronomy, restoration projects, and woodworking, though so far I’ve just been an interested amateur or spectator. And I’d love to learn about farming (not just growing mangoes) ; )

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Thanks to my musical training, I’m not only knowledgeable about music but also skilled at teaching. I get along well with children. (During my studies, I even worked as a children’s mascot for several years.) And I’m good with animals, too - I used to do vaulting when I was a kid. I can handle minor repairs, painting, and certainly many other tasks once someone has shown me how to do them - whether it involves physical labor or problem-solving. For example, at the music publishing company, I created social media posts and, even though I’m not an IT specialist, set up a web hosting service and wrote a guide for the department. I think I’m a quick learner in many areas. But I don’t want to gloss over one major hurdle: I’m afraid of heights. (At least as long as there’s no railing or something similar - Standing on a normal indoor ladder is no problem for me either.) And I'm not a good cook, even though I'd like to work on changing that. Still, I make myself useful by chopping vegetables or doing similar tasks, washing dishes, and so on.
