Description

We are a couple traveling in Sri Lanka interested in local communities path towards sustainability in terms of education, economy and environment. We are currently in Kandy, Sri Lanka and looking forward to incorporate animal care, public health, and female empowerment into our volunteering efforts. Between the two of us we have skills in photography, Chinese language and more than seven years of teaching experience between the two of us. In addition, we are dedicated to making lasting cross cultural relationships, happy to fulfill administrative positions if the opportunity is presented.

Throughout my life I have studied Mandarin Chinese, French and Italian and have over 5 years teaching English as a second language. My partner has 3 years teaching Mandarin Chinese and English. We believe that teaching and learning go hand in hand, with cultural immersion necessary to bring the language alive and make it stick!

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

My personal experience lies mostly in Italy and Benin. In Italy I worked in a chickpea farm, lemon grove and processing olive oil. Here we mostly did work harvesting the beans, maintaining the farm in terms of pests/weeds, and finally supervising the olive oil making process from start to finish, which there was a lot to learn from!

In Benin learning about biofuel and fish farming was eye opening, as well as using small stations to power other stations. Such as using manure from the pig pen to fertilize the banana plantation, then using slops from the kitchen to feed the pigs.

My partner has some expertise, within mainland China she mostly helped her parents and grandparents on their farms during a time of rapid urbanization. As China continues to develop into a superpower, sustainable agriculture remains to be an important solution in the problems that lie ahead.

 Recently, our work in an orphanage in Nepal (Joon Project) seem to be the most relevant to this question, as well as our careers as teachers in and outside China. In the past, I have done political work in Chicago/food security volunteering in WA state during the holidays.
