Staying with Jim and Laurie was three weeks of fun and learning cool new things! J & L are so cool and interesting, it will make you want to be cooler and more interesting. With all their achievements and bucket list stories, you'll leave feeling motivated and inspired.
J&L were extremely welcoming and generous. They introduced us to their
… read more friends, took us to the theatre, Laurie took us on a wonderful hike in the Adirondacks, Jim gave accordion lessons (super cool coming away having learned a new instrument!!) we helped paint, learned about beekeeping and put wooden hive frames together, learned how to make kombucha and tofu, played board games... and there is soo much more to the list. If we wanted to make or cook something, they'd encourage us.
Work-wise, it was never too much and it was very varied. We loved being outside helping put the garden to bed for winter and stacking firewood, as it is such a beautiful spot that they live on.
If you have the opportunity to stay with these guys (and Percy & Lupi & the chickens and Daisy) I wouldn't think twice about it. You really don't want to miss out on the delicious breakfasts and meals they kindly make and make sure to play a game of Birdgame, it's addictive! ..whilst sipping on a lovely local bev.
Jim and Laurie will be very hard to beat on the Workaway front. It's going to feel like betrayal when we stay at another! haha.
Thanks guys, you were the highlight of our America trip.
We will defo be back to visit our friends again, who we miss dearly already.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

We are sure that the experience at Jim and Laurie's will always be remembered as two timeless months of friendship, sharing and friendship. Whereas in our previous workaways we worked for our hosts, at Jim and Laurie's it was a constant sharing so that we never really felt like we were working. We left with a complete book of DIY recipes and tips
… read more and also helped add to their cookbook. We learned new songs that we played together, and even a new instrument (the accordion) that we will obviously continue to practice. We exchanged reading tips, music to listen to, moments in our lives, both good and bad. I really think we learned a lot from each other. In addition to this incredible sharing, we had incredible moments that we could never have experienced elsewhere: the hikes in the Catskills and Adirondacks, the bike rides on the Hudson River, the evenings around the fire, the contact with nature, wildlife and flora... it was a great breath of greenery, enthusiasm and joy. We loved Jim and Laurie's state of mind: you want it? Do it yourself! They built their house from scratch with what they had on hand. They are totally autonomous in water and electricity. At the end of the stay, we stopped asking "where did you buy that? " because the answer was always "we didn't buy it, we made it"! Beyond all their skills, Jim and Laurie are exceptional hosts. Always willing to please, generous, friendly, understanding, etc... we couldn't have asked for a better time. Thanks again to both of you, thanks for everything!

Paul and Perrine mark the first time that we invited a couple for a workaway stay. As for work, the two of them together are like a well-oiled machine. They learned quickly, communicated well both with us and between themselves, and took to every task with enthusiasm. Like every workawayer before them, they moved, split and stacked mountains of firewood, helped with clearing and cleaning up construction debris. They worked in the garden, washed dishes, and swept the floors, and contributed many hours volunteering at our local food cooperative. They cooked, made fruit jams, pickles, kimchi and more. Their signature accomplishment during their stay was their work on our bottle walls. This was a project Laurie had started back in the winter, collecting bottles (mostly wine bottles), cleaning and removing labels, cutting them to a uniform size and joining two bottoms with tape to make glass bricks. Paul and Perrine quickly learned all the steps in the process, and soon we had enough "bricks" to start our walls. Together we came up with designs for the spaces we wanted to fill, and with Laurie and Perrine as bricklayers and Paul and Jim as the mortar mixers (Jim did a lot of "supervising" at this point, while Paul did a lot of heavy lifting!) we took on the final stages of the work. The job required nearly 700 glass bricks, each made from two bottles, several hundred pounds of Portland cement, and nearly three thousand pounds of sand, and it was a celebration when Laurie and Perrine, working on ladders, installed the final brick.
Their stay here was not all work. They got to go hiking with Laurie both in the high peaks of the Adirondacks and in the Catskill Mountains and biking along the Erie Canal and around town. We played music together; Jim improved his French while Paul and Perrine made great progress in their English proficiency. We could go on about all the fun we had together, but suffice it to say, we will have many fond and lasting memories of our time with the Frenchies.
And now it is time to say, En voiture Simone!

The homestead in which Jim and Laurie reside is a display of dedication, human ingenuity and elbow-grease-by-the-gallon; it's also a labor of love. They can tell you where every piece of material came from, whether it's the stones in their walls or the timber framing the home. It's an absolute inspiration to behold as well as a cozy spot to settle
… read more in with a good book or gaze out the greenhouse at the rising sun.
If you have a personal project you'd like to work on, both Jim and Laurie will do everything they can to aid you and will champion your efforts--they let me build a debris hut in their woods and I even stayed in it for 3 nights (because I'm obsessed with earth skills and driven to do this; I was perfectly welcome to the snuggly bed in their private guestroom haha).
They're excellent cooks and there's lots to learn about fermentation and general food preservation. I got to help out (I say help out, but really, I just watched in awe and took diligent notes as Laurie talked me through making tofu, kombucha and more) with different recipes, as well as some harvesting, garlic cleaning and even some beekeeping. There was also work to be done at the co-op (a great show of how one can get involved in their community), splitting and moving lumber and weather-stripping the greenhouse vents. And plenty of stick throwing for the dogs. ONE CAN NEVER THROW TOO MANY STICKS.
Both Laurie and Jim are happy to answer questions and will go in-depth on whatever it is they're working on. There's lots to learn and much fun to be had, so if you get a chance to stay with them, know that you're in good hands (and paws. <3 to Vita, Lupi and Percy, my faithful furry companions).Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

My stay with Jim and Laurie was an exceedingly enlightening and enjoyable way to spend a month. Both of them have far more knowledge and experience than I was capable of fully absorbing. They appreciate curiosity and are great fun to speak to - we had some long and interesting conversations, a few of which could have been classified as "debates"
… read more on more profound issues. But everything was very laidback. Doing work for people who are so deserving of respect and admiration is a breeze. I only hope that someday I will see the solar panels which will be installed on the clearing Jim and I worked on for many days. Jim and Laurie are both very encouraging of any kind of projects, something which I didn't take nearly enough advantage of, though I did love playing their vast collection of instruments and browsing their huge library. If you like food, you will be pleased - they have an impressive system of homemade food projects and are first-rate cooks in general. I made my first successful sourdough at the homestead, using their years-old starter. Their pets are absolutely fantastic. Percy the cat was a lovely reading companion whom I miss dearly, and throwing sticks for Lupi never got old. They have managed to procure a deep and thoughtful existence on sixty or so acres of land in beautiful upstate New York, but they are far from "settled" in the sedentary sense. Energetic and creative souls who prove that you can do just about anything if you are thoughtful and patient. I feel as though I only scratched the surface with Jim and Laurie, even after a month with them! An unforgettable experience for a young fellow like me.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Ty was our first workaway since January of 2020, and after more than a year of isolation with the pandemic we were reminded once again of how great it is to be able to invite a workawayer into our home.
