    Description

We are a family of six who homestead on 124 acres on Vancouver Island. As our friends describe our place, it's a farm run by young people with kids and cows running around and everyone having a good time😄

We have primarily cows, but there are emus, chickens, ducks, a couple ponies, dogs, and cats too. We have four children two boys and two girls between the ages of 0-6years old.

We moved onto this property in November of 2022 and it has been a lot of work as we strive towards living more self sustainably. We have a gorgeous view of the mountains, a beautiful large creek, and a large portion of our land is still quite wild. We have seen lots of wildlife here from bears, elk, deer, and evidence of cougars.

During downtime I enjoy teaching soap making and crocheting if that is something that you are interested to learn.

I used to be on Workaway before I met my husband and want to offer an amazing farm stay experience like I received in the past! We have hosted for almost two years now and love building our global community and living vicariously through those we have met. You will become a part of our family. I have learned so much about cooking, language, and culture from workaways in past.

You will most likely get to see a lot of Canadian wildlife while with us. Being on the coast you will get a taste for Canadian west coast culture. There is so much history to be explored in the Comox Valley. There is also an amazing farmers market that happens weekly close to our farm where you can get a taste for local food and art. Staying with us you will get a taste of what rural living in Canada looks like. If you are adventurous and love the outdoors, Canada's west coast is the place for you!

Courtenay also hosts a free women's self defence class weekly that I attend that many workaways in the past have enjoyed attending with me too😁

Currently, we don’t have a tonne going on farm wise so we are looking for more help around the house and with the children. This often looks like doing dishes and cleaning up after meals. Helping the kids tidy their room, playing games with them, reading books, and helping us take them on small hikes. If you enjoy cooking we love trying new dishes too!

As far as animal care, we are looking for help in the morning feeding and filling water dishes. When there are calves or goats on the bottle help with bottle feeding is appreciated too. Occasionally we ask for some help weeding and raking in the flower gardens and general outdoor maintenance.

We have a private room for workaways in our house with a shared bathroom. We have Wifi and a washer and dryer available too! We have a bike workaways are welcome to use to explore on in their off time. The workaway room is always tidy and clean upon arrival; The rest of the house really depends😅 Summer and Fall are really busy times of the year and I often fall behind on cleaning but can generally keep on top of it when I have a workaway around. We are on a farm, there is a lot of dirt on a farm and it gets dragged into the house by everyone so if you aren't comfortable with dirt then you might not be comfortable here.

Our food is primarily food we produced ourselves. We drink raw milk from our cows and almost all our dairy products we make ourselves. We eat a large protein based diet in the winter/spring. We cannot accommodate vegans and vegetarians we have hosted in the past but we are only able to do so in the summer/fall.

If you like to ski or snowboard we are right at the base of Mount Washington which also has plenty of hiking trails. Courtenay is only a five minute drive from the farm and has a beautiful downtown and museums. There are so many beautiful hikes nearby and in the valley. Cumberland is not far and has awesome mountain bike trails. Tofino is about a 3 1/2hour drive but it's gorgeous and you can surf there. Coastal wildlife tours are also available in Campbell River which we drive to frequently
