Description
Welcome to our place in the Canterbury foothills!
We’re a family living on a lifestyle block about 60 km from Christchurch, close to the main highway that links the city to the West Coast. Our home is surrounded by beautiful lakes, rivers, and walking tracks, and we’re only about 30 minutes from the nearest ski field—perfect for anyone who enjoys the outdoors.
We have three older children: our eldest has already left home, and the younger two are usually here only on weekends. When our youngest is at school, either Rob or Susan will be staying in Christchurch with the kids which means it will be just you and whichever parent is left staying on the property.
Half of our property is planted in mature native trees, and we also have sheep, some chickens and two dogs. We once had a thriving vegetable garden, though at the moment it’s looking a bit neglected and needs some attention.
As a family, we really enjoy meeting new people and learning about different cultures. Hosting through Workaway has been an amazing experience for us—we’ve met wonderful people from all over the world and made lasting friendships. It’s also a great way for our children to see how diverse the world is and how differently people live.
We’re excited to continue welcoming travellers, sharing our little corner of New Zealand, and learning from the people who come to stay with us.

By becoming part of our family you will get an insight into country family life in New Zealand. We live in a place with spectacular views and a fantastic climate. Well worth a visit if you are not afraid of a little work.
Aide
We’re looking for people who are happy to get involved in a variety of tasks around our lifestyle block. The main areas we need help with are:
- Weed control in our native planting area - this includes removal of gorse, broom and other invasive plants and keeping tracks clear within our mature native tree block
- General maintenance and small building projects – depending on your skills and confidence.
- Gardening - mainly helping to make our vege garden productive again.
- Everyday household help – assisting with preparing meals and cleaning up afterwards. We work as a team here, and we expect visitors to become part of our family and join in with daily life.
We value people who are willing to pitch in, try new things, and enjoy being part of a relaxed, friendly home.
Most of the work is more physical in nature and will require and good level of fitness.

Most wonderful, vibrant, fun and welcoming family I have ever met! Felt integrated into all activities from day to day business till birthday, family and friends celebrations. Very unhappy!
We had plenty of communiction to arrange the visit and stay of 4 weeks, then nothing at all. I sent an email out a week before and no reply.
We turned a lot of requests down to accomadate Christine during a very busy part of our year.
Don't be dissapointed if she doesn't show up... you have been warned.

Freda was able to jopin us as part of the family with ease, playing with the children and helping out in the kitchen was something she was very good at.
The weather wasn't the best for her stay but she was still keen to go outside and help out with any jobs that needed to be done.

Liv and Franzi were a great help when they stayed at our place. They were happy to give any job a go and did it well. They were great with our children and also taught them (us) some German. Always looking for things to do and happy to help out in the kitchen, great cooks as well.

Veronica was very good to have around as she had so much time for the children, and our children love to spend time with the people who stay with us... She was also great to have around helping as she had no porblem giving things a go.

It was our first host family. We had an awesome time and enjoyed every minute of the farm life. After the "work" we spend a lot of time with the children ( Danielle, Natasha and Sean) which kept us always busy:) Thank you for the great week.

Fionan fitted into our family life really well. He is very easy going and cheerful. Always looking for work, has initiative and will find something to do. He is also willing to give anything a go. Also great with the kids. Would happily have him back and recommend him to anyone else.

Aidas was very keen to try different things from culture to jobs to food. Was a pleasure to have around and always looking for something to do, day or night. i really enjoyed my days at the farm with the lovely family and the different animals ( especially the pigs ;-) we made a lot of extra programm like going to arthur's pass, baking, visiting relativs. i can really recommand rob, susan and the cute kids to stay with and, when the weather is right, the location is awesome.
