**PLEASE NOTE: We require a HIGH level of spoken ENGLISH**
*We prefer a minimum of a month stay.*

When you become part of our family, we want you to get an experience! NO EXPERIENCE needed, just enthusiasm!!

We also need you to be fluent in English, due to the ranching environment we require that you have a high understanding and spoken English. We are a cultural exchange; we want to share the lifestyle we love so much!

** We DO NOT allow DRINKING, SMOKING, VAPING or DRUG USE**

Write something original, don't send me the same thing you send to everyone!

We usually require a minimum of a month stay with us.

You NEED to be a flexible person who doesn't require a routine. We have a few daily must do items (dog feeding, walks and pony and cattle herd checks) Otherwise we rarely have plans. If we happen to make one it will be confusing also, an extremely good chance it will change 14 times before breakfast. There is very little routine, this can be a great experience learning to adapt. What you learn and what you get to do continuously changes, the longer the stay the more you will learn. There are jobs we do together, We also have things to do that just requires one person an ability to work independently and be a self starter is important.

If you are on a Working Holiday Visa and require proof that you have a valid job offer. In addition to the ranch experience, we also have a Traffic Control company, we do need a 5-month commitment to write you a letter of job offer. You can contact me and ask more about it, if this interests you. Our ranch is still a big part of your life even if you are here working 😊

Reasons to come to the ranch!

We live in what can best be described as a post card, we are in a Valley between the Rocky Mountains and the Caribou Mountains! Every direction you look it is beautiful!!

    1. You will have an opportunity to live in a place that looks like a post card in every direction you look!

    2. I will take you on an unbelievable road trip featuring an exclusive car concert starring MYSELF co-staring YOU!

    3. I will let sleep with a minimum of 1 dog, more if you want. If you don't want a dog roommate DO NOT apply. You might think I am joking, but I’m not! The dogs think of you as guests in their home.

    4. If you bug my son Wyatt enough, basically every time you see him, he knows hiking trails that you will never forget, and the average "tourist" never sees. We know hidden spot, trails and glacier lake that are not on an “tourist maps” no crowds, just nature. Social distancing made easy!

    5. We will allow you to cook meals for our family, from your home country!

    6. We will eat your cooking even if its gross :) with smiling faces! or the happiest we can look ( we do have a few who just will not try it, if its too weird ) sorry

    7. You will learn about our crazy mountain valley weather system and be shocked by how many seasons can happen in one day!

    8. Picking up dog poop can be a fun game; life is what you make it!

    9. We will give you an excavator bucket ride, this is a great Canadian experience that no one should miss out on. (This has an extremely exciting winter version only for the brave! warning a helmet must be worn)

    10. I have lots of videos and photos to show you how fun a pony, dog and cow Ranch can be!!

    12. You can take a shower with at least one dog watching.

    13. You will always have a dog that will follow you to the toilet, so you don't have to read your boring phone on the toilet. If you close the door before a dog gets in the bathroom don’t worry, it will sit outside the door and scratch it until you return!

    14. We have puppies a few times a year!

    15. We have tractors, and everyone loves tractors, if you seem responsible, we might let you try to drive one! (Must be staying longer than two months for this one)

    16. You will get to meet:

    ALL THE DOGS!

The Boston Terriers, we have a litter of pups once a year, these are the sweetest roommates a you could ask for, you do have to look past the toxic smelling farts tho!

    A. Kramer is the most relaxed dog you’ll ever meet, he enjoys doing yoga by the fireplace, and sleeping on his back snoring

    B. Molly- She moved here from the city and has turned herself into a very amazing ranch dog!

    C. Squeaks, and odd colored, high five giving little Boston who does tend to complain about things

    D. Sky and Wookie are sisters, and they are the cutest dogs you will ever meet, even if you don’t like flat faced dogs these two will win you over! I guarantee it! (Sky lives Amber and Wyatt as she loves them the most)

    E. Crazy Daisy, she is also a youngster and a mini Boxer, Boston Sized – Boxer Crazy!

    F. Downtown Brownie Brown (French Bulldog) Very damaged dog previously abused, not the most stable animal. She is also known as the table shark! She is only seen when Leah is about otherwise, she hides in a create, if you are dedicated she might let you pet her, but not right away she needs to feel safe with you first. She lives to ride in an air conditioned Tractor with Leah on Hot Summer day!

    G. Naked Ned ( Chinese Crested) Nedwin is the ugly until you look at him long enough then he turns cute! He is also the happiest dog! He is just full of life!

    H. Lottie and Hattie – The Boxers, they are the most human like breed of dog, once you are here, you’ll understand what I mean, but is almost like you expect them to talk to you! They are also a forever puppy energy breed!

    I. Sunday, the smartest Ranch Lab in the history of Labs!! She knows tons of tricks! She is Amber BABY.

    j. Dusty, is the newest pup at the Ranch he is Wyatt's dog and is a Basset Hound, I can not put into words how cute and sweet Dusty is.

    17. You will enjoy all dogs except Downtown Brownie Brown, as she is possibly an alien, she takes items from around the house and hides it under the table (we assume to repair a crashed spaceship somewhere), she also is known to try and sample leg meat, she doesn’t know what to do if energy around her gets high or excited. We have had her 4 years now and is our longest rehab project. When we got her, it took me 6 weeks to pet her, she still rarely lets others touch her. Lately she has been letting more people near her and does not sample leg meat as often.

    18. We have 3 cats in mix of all these these dogs, ( and one Part time cat that just shows up then leaves again)

Mia - she owns the barn, its her turf!

Furgie – is on mouse patrol in the house she takes her job very seriously!

Herbie – Lives with Wyatt and Amber ( 2 of the dogs also live with them on their place, Sunday and Sky) Herbie only looks like a cat, he is for sure meant to be a dog.

Herpie- Herpie is Herbies Evil Twin - a wild cat that shows up from time to time, he looks like Herbie but is not tame or nice, he is here often enough I figured we'd give him a mention.

    19. We will make you feel like family, real family no faking here!

    20. You could get a chance to drive a Shetland pony!

    21. We have a small herd of 10 amazing cows, calving season starts in March!

    22. I have ponies needing love and brushing, If you can get near it you can brush it!

    23. Finally, I will let you help me judge other work-away profiles. Just like our current work-a-ways get to judge you!
We are not vegetarian, but we love having them here, it doesn't scare us, due to where we live it's pretty remote, we do not have the best selection of food for vegans, and they end up on a vegetarian diet. We also try and make everyone try some ethically raised home grown food.

If you love photography this is an amazing place to be! If you are good at photography, I always love to learn more things!
    My camera is a cannon t7i :)

We are Canada close to Jasper (1.5 hours), tons of local hiking trails! Both here and in Valemount (1 hour away), close to groomed x-country skiing on Bell Mountain ( it's about 5 mins away. We have snowmobiles and there is a good chance to get you to the top of a Mountain in the winter. TONS of Wildlife seeking bears, moose, deer and coyotes ect. Working holiday Visa are recommended it just makes things easier. (Some of these are only possible in the warm months!)
In the past we have enjoyed meeting people from Canada, Australia, Austria, Germany, Spain, Czech, France, USA, New Zealand, Denmark, Estonia, UK, Scotland and Holland, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Portugal and We are looking forward to meeting you next!

To volunteer here you need to be a person who LOVES dogs! Not normal type of I love dogs, dogs are cool! BUT really love everything about them! Even when they are bad. Things like 10 dogs staring at you when you eat at the table not bothering you kind of dog love, or you don't mind sharing your bed with a dog that believes you are a guest staying in her room, how about being followed to the bathroom most of the time. You must be the type who sees dog hair as a fashion accessory. I don't think I can truly put into words the dog person you need to be! We do have some dogs that are a wee bit emotionally damaged and one that is very damaged, they are a bit different then the regular house dog, but we love them anyways and I am positive most people would have given up on them long ago, not being first owners of them, I know many have written some of my pack, but I love them for the crazy dogs for who they are <3
We have ponies and horses, so if you've not done a lot with either, this could be the place for you! We love people getting to live out lifelong or childhood dreams of working with and learning about the ponies. Working with the horses and ponies is generally for longer term commitments, of one two months or more.

Okay if you have read this far I'm sure you are wonder what about the horses and ponies, we are currently looking for a person who is experienced with doing ground work on the youngstock, haltering and catching, leading, picking up hooves, brushing and just general working with them, If you have horse experience and can work ponies and horses with little to no supervision, we will have a spot for you!

Now about our saddle horses, our riding horses are not arena or lesson type horses; they can be a bit of a challenge to ride if you don’t have a lot of experience out of a group or lesson riding situation. They have some pretty strong opinions, they are not fancy trained and are not an easy ride for someone who has only ridden in a controlled and lesson situation.

We'd love to have people who are interested in taking photos, nature animals and less about hanging out indoors watching their phone of playing video games.

*️We are a No drinking, Smoking or drug environment. *️This is not up for negotiation, if your life requires you to do any of these, don't apply. ** If your caught doing any of these you will be asked to leave. *️

Our work-away tend to be from 18 to their late 40's, You will fit in great if you are a little nerdy, crazy or possibly have an unhealthy love of dogs, and want to learn about ranching, cattle, ponies and all the work and fun that goes into it! We seek people who want to be a part of a ranch and family and not just a person visiting a ranch. We want people to feel at home when they are here and when they leave feel like they have a ranch family in Canada they can visit anytime!

    Now a bit about us!

My name is Leah on top of my love of Dogs and Ponies, I also run a Traffic Control Company, it became very busy in 2021 and I am working on being able to now balance my truest love the Ranch and a growing business.

John is my husband and grew up in this beautiful place! John does a lot of the ranch work; he also does help with the traffic control business. This is new this fall that we are able to do this, With traffic control doing so well he can do what he loves most, and that is put time in on our amazing ranch!
A little-known fact about ranching.... you need a lot of income to support your ranching habit!

Wyatt and his wife and best friend Amber (She started as a workaway from the UK, and now she is living in Canada) they both love the Ranching and Mountain environment. They also do a lot of the ranching; Wyatt also does Traffic Control; he is also taking on the new addition to our Traffic Control Business' - A Mobile Treatment Center. Amber also works with the traffic control company however, her true calling is ranching. From the moment she arrived she just fit in there. I now cant imagine the ranch with our her it's like she is meant to be part of our family! Amber is amazing with the ponies and horses. Wyatt is more of a Quad and Snowmobile kind of guy! Wyatt and Amber got married here at the ranch on Aug 13 2023.

Liam: is from Guernsey UK, He came last July on a Holiday Visa but that turned into working Visa. Liam has become a true Ranch hand in the year he has been here! He can operate all the tractors and most of the equipment and he is in the top three of ALL TIME BEST for raking hay before bale it!! This is some pretty tough competition and I am pretty picky about how raking is done before baling! Aside from being a master at tractors, Liam enjoys hiking and hanging our with his most favorite Boston Terrier Kramer. He also uses skills of his past and is the best tech support in McBride!

Extra note: Anna: she is our German family member, she is Ambers sister (they picked each other) and has plans to be back soon. She is a case of coming to Canada and finding out that is the place her heart is truly happiest. She spent 1.5 year here during COVID . She has returned several times since leaving the ranch, We all love her so much and can’t wait for her to return “home”

    Note from Anna:
The ranch is the most beautiful place you’ll ever see and my family is the most amazing and craziest family you’ll ever meet. I love them all way too much.
Also Wookie is my dog so don’t steal her!!
(But I always appreciate someone sending me photos and videos of her so if you’ll do that we’ll be friends! )

We love hosting as it gives us an opportunity to share this little slice of paradise, we live in. It's also great that we get to be a part of your adventure in Canada!

We are a typical ranching family, and we want you to experience what ranch life, by that, I mean we do work, we love projects, this isn't a vacation ranch, we work together to complete projects, our animals' welfare and safety comes first. If a cow or calf needs care, or if the animals need to be fed, we take care of them before ourselves. We are people who love what we do and where we live, we have a true love and passion for our lifestyle. We want people who are also passionate to join us! Enthusiasm and willingness to try are the best thing a person can ever offer!

So, if you're up for some fun, being part of a multi-generation family and learning ranch life! This is the place for you! Everyone who comes is thought of as family. We are maybe best described as a hard-working family, that has artsy, nerdy and musical tendencies, do not worry about not fitting in as we are very accepting to different lifestyles and cultures. If you are enjoying what you are learning here it will be an amazing time! (And trust me you can learn a lot)

2023 is our Eighth year being a host and so far, we are LOVING the experience!

*️I know it has been mentioned but I need to make sure you LOVE LOVE LOVE dogs! If you come to the ranch, loving dogs is a must! You cannot just like dogs, you must love them ! I'll apologize now, the dogs have a little trouble understanding personal space, but they are very friendly. From Wolfhound to tiny Boston Terriers, these are my ranch dogs and they are all always up for a hike or an adventure!*

What could be better than sitting in the foal field looking at the mountains waiting for a curious foal to get brave enough to sniff your arm? Once that happens within a few days, you end up with a new best friend!

Depending on when you come, we could be doing anything from calving (season starts in March) to haying and harvest starting in mid July. every year time is spent making and fixing the fence to keeps the elk out of our hay,
I know this is a repeat but its is very important! You MUST have a EXTREMELY competent understanding of the English language. Due to the farming/ranching environment, we need to make sure you understand what we are asking of you with your daily tasks. We welcome people wanting to improve their English (confidence speaking it), but you need to understand English. . On a ranch, sometimes things need to be quickly explained, and knowing English becomes a safety issue

If you are small adult with riding experience, you have a pretty good chance of joining us, as the ponies that were driven this past winter are now learning some riding skills. We have found smaller adults to be the kindest way to train a pony to ride as they have good balance and that is helpful to ponies learning the basics plus if your trail riding on a pony low tree branches won't smack you as much!

If you have old injuries that bother you, this is *NOT *️ the place for you. Everything from working with the ponies to helping with farm work involves a level of physical health. You don't need to be an athlete, you don't have to be overly fit, you just need to be healthy and uninjured.

Now for our MANDITORY screening question.... This must be answered in your message to me, so I know you are not copy and pasting me the same message you are sending everyone.
One of the dogs has pooped on the front step what do you do?

    A) Announce to everyone that a dog has pooped in front of the door and walk around it.
    B) Announce a dog has pooped but then pick it up anyways.
    C) Just pick it up and carry on with your day

C is the preferred answer, however, will also accept B as the poop will be picked up. If you picked A this is not the place for you.

If you got this question correct, please apply for a time you unlike any other and experience things you will never forget.

If you have allergies to animals or the things in your environment, this is *️NOT* the place for you.
We are only 5 minutes from the town of McBride, and we can host up to 3 people, but it might be easier to schedule if they come as one from each location because we are finding people's time overlaps. Plus, you will also get the chance to meet people from other countries!

MONTHS MARKED IN YELLOW IN THE CALENDAR HAVE ONE WORK-AWAY VOLUNTEER AND ROOM FOR ONE OR 2 MORE.
We have added to our truck insurance so work-away volunteers can drive our vehicles, so there is POTENTIAL that you could use a truck to occasionally explore the area on your own. We can potentially supply a vehicle, but not supplying fuel for trips. THIS IS OFFERED TO LONGER TERM WORK-AWAY ONLY.

We do not normally accept young couples; we find people traveling together have been in the past hard to separate for tasks. So, if you're travelling together... you'll need to sell me on it...

Extra note: I don't have much time to show people how to operate washing machines, and cook you every meal, breakfast and lunch we usually have a dinner together. We are looking for people who are very independent in the life skills department.

    WHAT ELSE

There is so many attractions in the area, such as hiking, local museum, we are close to Jasper National Park (ok once you are here we are Canada close 1.5 hours from Jasper), white water rafting, the Ancient Forest, and Mount Robson.

We are willing to help with transport for people who make a long term commitment to go see these nearby attractions. Our local community is also great for taking workaway volunteers if they are travelling. It's a great way to meet more people and get a feel for rural small town Canada!

    CURRENT NEEDS

YOU HAVE TO LOVE DOGS! Dogs love walks!

1.People with building or construction experience! We can always use people who have these skill!!

    2. Smaller adults with riding experience or a wanting to learn to work with ponies ( Helmets are required to be worn when working ponies)

    CAN YOU COOK?
Doesn't matter, you will get a chance to cook when you are here! Especially in the summer months when we are super busy we'd sure enjoys someone who'd love to help prepare meals, Dinners mainly the rest of the time is fend for yourself!

If you are good at meal prep, we'd love to have you here! And and all times of the year, this is always a bonus skill that we welcome.

HOUSE: you will be expected to help keep the house clean, not spotless, but we are not interested in people who only add to the mess. We get very busy in the non snowy months and you have no idea how much thinks like making sure the counters are cleaned off and dishes are done, everyone is part of this, a real family atmosphere.

Last 6 years of workaway volunteers had very little, to no horse experience, but they did amazingly! Everything from helping trim hooves, teaching the young ponies to lead, riding and driving training!

Overall, I was beyond impressed with the enthusiasm of our non-horsey crew this year! A long term commitment is required for help with the ponies (driving and riding). The ponies can always use a brushing or a walk no matter how long you stay!

    NORMAL SPRING AND SUMMER TASKS
Fixing and painting fences, general clean up, brushing ponies, are all usual tasks for this time of year, along with helping with cattle, walking through and checking on the mamas and calves, and help chopping firewood. Although riding is more of a leisure activity for our family, I can't 100% guarantee you'll get to ride the horses or drive the ponies.

Any help in the house is beyond appreciated. Its guaranteed you'll be a favorite! As part of the family, you'll also get normal family chores, some house stuff will be required because we want to share our family and farming lifestyle with people. We are excited to be in the program!
