    Description

My residential property is located in Finnmark county, in the far north of Norway. It is nicely located by the sea (east and innermost of Tanafjord), approx. 200 km from Kirkenes airport, 40 km from Tana bridge and 50 km from Båtsfjord.
The property has a large plot and a long shoreline to the sea. In the summer months, there is good sea trout fishing right outside, and good fishing opportunities elsewhere in the fjord and in inland waters. The property has a border 500 meters away from Tanamunningen Nature Reserve, with a unique nature and wildlife area, without human interventions of various kinds.

It is an Arctic area, with short hectic summer and midnight sun, and autumn/winter with northern lights. Birdwatchers from all over the world are very interested in the area and the many bird species found there, especially in spring and summer, see e.g. Tanamunningen.pdf.
For those who love nature and wildlife, and who thrive alone and outside of social and urban life, this is a good place to be. It is 40 km to the nearest grocery store and the municipal center.

I am a 72 year old retired lawyer, who moved from Oslo to Tana after my wife died in 2024. Children, grandchildren and other family live in Oslo. I am positive and have a good mood and good health, am sociable, and got many interests. I live alone and secluded here because of the nature, the environment and the weather, the place, peace and quiet, and very good opportunities for outdoor life, fishing etc.

I want help from 1 person with some practical things. It can also be nice to get to know a different culture and have some social interaction with a pleasant person.

It is not possible to accommodate family, friends or visitors.

It is the nature experiences and wildlife that are crucially important here! There are few modern cultural activities in the district, and the distances to different centers are long. To thrive here, you have to accept this and have a personality that can handle it. In addition: Tana Municipality, together with several neighbouring municipalities, has a large Sami-speaking population. Sami culture and traditions remain a living part of everyday life here. Visitors can experience this through meeting local people, visiting exhibitions of traditional Sami clothing, handicrafts and cultural heritage, and exploring the three Sami museums located in the surrounding area.

During certain times of the year it is also possible to watch reindeer herders gather, sort and mark the year's new calves in the mountains. Throughout the landscape you can find ancient pitfall traps that were built hundreds or even thousands of years ago to catch wild reindeer. Many traditional Sami dwellings, known as gammer, have also been preserved. An important part of Sami culture is living from nature—harvesting fish, game, berries and edible plants in a sustainable way.

From April to October I would be happy to introduce Workawayers to these aspects of the region. During the winter there are fewer opportunities for outdoor cultural activities, as life is more influenced by darkness, snow, the weather and, of course, the Northern Lights. Regardless of the season, I will do my best to share the cultural experiences that are available nearby. We will travel together by car or, when conditions allow, by boat.

I believe these experiences give visitors a lasting understanding of how people lived here hundreds and even thousands of years ago. They depended entirely on nature and survived in a beautiful but demanding environment. It is a perspective that many people in today's modern world rarely have the opportunity to experience. As a Workawayer you and I will spend quite a lot of time together. I provide shared meals, good conversations, information about the local area, and trips into the surrounding nature and, when possible, out on the sea. If you are interested, I can also teach some practical skills related to fishing, small game hunting, rifle shooting, Qigong, meditation, karate and day trading.

At the same time, I hope to learn from you. One of the things I value most about hosting is the opportunity to meet someone from a different culture, exchange ideas and experiences, learn new skills, and gain fresh inspiration from seeing life through another person's eyes.

  • Aide

    Aide

    Help wanted:

Care of my hobby birds (quails)
    Cleaning indoors
    Occasional cooking/washing up
    Painting/maintaining buildings
Keeping outdoor areas in good condition, removing weeds, etc.
Wash car, boat and various equipment
    Other incidental help

You must have guts, a good mood and be positive, not self-pretentious, willing to help, curious and interested in learning and experiencing new things.

It can also be nice and useful to share some practical knowledge and skills, and to make some joint trips on the sea and in the mountains in the area.
